All the articles I have read so far have pinpointed Italy's old age "problem" as a key part of their suseptability to this disease. Nothing about Chinese dropping like flies over there.

If the Italians noticed that the Corona Virus is largely a "Chinese thang" they wouldn't be blocking off the entire country. Instead they would take measures to isolate the Chinese. They know who is hit the hardest by looking at people, as they check into the hospitals.

I must admit though, it is a compelling thing to speculate about.

38 cases in Peru, we're now the second country with more cases. The campaigns to stay home are everywhere. I'm glad people are cooperating, except only a few idiots.

Anyway, Venezuela finally has Coronavirus. And Colombia just shut theier borders for them. That's gonna be tragic for the many people living in border towns who depend on Colombia to survive. Colombia also deported a Spaniard who didn't want to comply.

Uruguay is the only Latin country in South America with zero cases. They've partially closed their borders and cancelled all public events. Argentina also closed borders for Europe, Japan, China, and USA.

On the good news, Brazil has apparently announced a patient is cured. They have now 99 cases.


Things are quiet so far.

I think the fact that the VA found it out is a point in their favor rather then against. Mild power level but I use VA healthcare and the hospital I go to with for clinics as of last week had already set up quarantine protocols. Nobody could enter the building unless they submitted to a screening that included a temperature check. This VA doc probably showed up to work, failed the screen and got sent to testing.

Very fair point. It's easy to broad brush the VA and say they're "all" bad but moving from one state to another recently I can say that the quality and preparedness differs. The one I went to at my current location let's coofing undead walkers shamble all over the place but the one I left does screening and quarantine properly for COVID.

This is the tl;dr of US pandemic laws.

The federal government can do whatever the fuck it wants to anyone, including US citizens, that come in from outside the US if it has reason to believe they pose a danger. Yes. They can move you to a military base and put you under armed guard.

Within the States, the State governments can do the whole armed guard thing and they can even go so far as send the national guard to your home, cuff you and move you to a FEMA camp under armed guard.

Their is case law on this and it to this point only deals with State level actions. Basic takeaway of it all is the State must show it is acting in good faith and there is an IMMEDIATE danger to the public. If both those criteria are met your State can do pretty much anything it wants to you if it serves the interest of halting the disease.

As recent immigration cases show, one court can halt the whole process. The Fed is not as powerful as you think. The political party tit for tat has turned it into an Orwellian paper tiger.

Nothing's going to happen to them and you know it. Look at how world organizations and the media are deep-throating the CCP for their "swift and decisive" actions against the coronavirus. There is no easy fix to this problem, but at a minimum it should be abundantly clear to all China is a nation of liars. And liars cannot be trusted. Be it with trade agreements, or even defense commitments. When it mattered the most, China chose to lie. Worse, they are doubling down on the lie with their own foreign ministry blaming America for this.

What is the cost of lies.

The cost of Chinas lies is every American is now having to hide in their homes, while Italians wonder if their grand parents will survive the year. The cost of Chinas lies are going to be immense. What can we endure that will not be as bad as what they have already inflicted on us?

I think China will be able to wiggle their way out of responsibility for this one. They know how to exercise soft power, as demonstrated in their gifting of token aid and relief to Italy. They know it's worth the PR benefit to send a couple thousand ventilators, hundreds of thousands of masks, and a few tens of medical experts to Italy at a time when those valuable resources should be saving the lives of dying Chinese citizens.

Just you wait a few weeks. They will be sending token aid shipments to every First World nation stricken by this disease, and it will fool the people into thinking that China is their benefactor, in contrast to their inept and powerless local government.
