Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

The post mortum on this will be interesting. How much you want to bet creating tests for this shit was at the very slowed down by FDA protocols, and/or labs refusing to use tests/protocols because they didn't receive the x97a certified paperwork required by State/Federal regulation yadayadabullshit.

The CDC has said they opted not to use the Chinese tests because they were throwing 40% false negatives. So they were failing to detect the disease 40% of the time. The problem was their home grown cobbled together test also had problems.

Yes, but there is a very low chance you will get it at all in most parts of the U.S., according to official info. If locking yourself inside makes you feel safe, go ahead, but it's not actually a proportionate response for most people.
The official info is bullshit. Homes, have you not been following at all? There is not a low chance in a lot of the US. They're artificially decreasing the numbers by refusing to test people, and even the artificially decreased numbers show a worrying exponential trend. The rest of the world is learning from Italy's example of leading with mass death. Do you think Disney, for example, has or ever would completely shut down for no reason? Do you think the executives in charge of Disney are making casual, uninformed decisions with their money? That school districts are shut down across the country for funsies? Kids don't even get sick, they just carry it.

If you are healthy there is absolutely no way to know if you're carrying it. Because they won't test you. Act as if you're contagious. Stay the fuck home unless absolutely necessary. I know it's really easy to fall into the "it can't happen HERE!" trap, but it absolutely can. Italy is a first world country, and it couldn't happen there until it did.

I fully expect some regulatory changes to come down the pipeline.

FDA and CDC decided to get into a pissing match during the first week of February. NYS wanted to use their own test kits and blamed the CDC, but it was actually the FDA's fault.

Which is the exact same thing that happened a few years ago with Ebola. Nobody knows who the fuck is supposed to be in charge.
Another reason places like Singapore and s. Korea had a better response is sheer size of government.
Smaller organizations/governments will always have a faster response and in the case of a bio-emergency, speed is the entire game.

How are recovered people doing? I heard concerns about lung capacity
Lung capacity will be reduced, just like any other pneumonia. It takes time for the lungs to recover from such an infection. Time-span for most pneumonia infections is like 3-4 months average recovery for full lung function.

If it doesnt get that far, like in most infection cases, there will not be a reduction in lung function.

hahahhaa good luck in telling New Yorkers what to do. They are the largest population of ManChilds (second to Massholes) and will do the absolute opposite of what you tell them.

This is god's way of culling the weak from the gene pool. The human race will be stronger in the end for surviving this.

I'm going upto the mount to get some tablets and talk to a bush...bbl.

Agree it's not possible for most, but I think people are underestimating just how much it's spread in the U.S.. Most states are still limited to a small number of tests because there's a bottleneck & focus is going to places where sustained community spread has been proven. Some states have evidence of community spread, indicating that a significant portion of their population is already infected, but aren't considered "sustained" yet because they don't have enough tests to prove such a thing.

The CDC is very much at fault for blundering the testing situation to begin with imo. They fucked up the efficacy of the tests and failed to provide access to local testing while stalling the general public and pretending they would start training for it "soon". The FDA was just doing their job.

Maybe.
It's too early and I never take the word of a person/group that deeply involved in a fuckup.
We will find out the truth in a few years.

It's funny because this should not be difficult. make a PCR test (or better yet, rapid PCR, deal with the false positives and find as many people as possible) and be done with it. they're incredibly accurate.

Singapore and South Korea both did really well.

They have public healthcare and incentivized people to get tested. The countries which tried to pretend nothing was happening have ended up eating shit so far.

Both countries also have relatively homogenous populations, people who largely seem to follow directions, and easily closed borders, if you will.

Update from the airport. I have seen 5 or 6 people in surgical masks so far. Zero people in N95 masks not counting myself. Remember this is an airport in Moscow which has had confirmed coronachan cases.

For a nation full of older aged (>45) smokers, I'm pretty shocked how chill everyone is about their own safety.

Time to get home and stockpile some stuff before the panic really starts.

EDIT: big group of primary school aged girls just walked past. Some sort of school trip I guess. One had a surgical mask, but it was pulled down to her chin.

more importantly they took shit seriously right of the bat, once they were hit they went 110% in containing and treating unlike the west which has been dragging it's feet the whole time even now.

could france end up eating shit before spain? hmm.

singapore is extremely culturally diverse. unless you just mean "they're all asian".

Homogeneity doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Corona-Chan got here on the back of white, middle class dickfaces that went skiing in the Alps. Doesn't get more homogenous than that.

"Cultural homogenous" on the internet usually just means "no niggers"

Last time I knew of my state, there was 20 cases. Recently, it got a jump to 66. No explanation (yet?), but judging from the numbers by country, most likely community spread and the fights happening at various stores.

EDIT: Apprantely, there's a mall who has a confirmed case with an employee and is refusing to shut down.
And a jump to 99 overnight. At least we found our patient zeros in one of the hotspots: 56-yr old father and 15-year old son that left from Italy.

I almost forgot, people here don't just hoard toilet paper, they also hoard yeast. It's really a pretty particular meme, but people convince themselves that they'll bake their own bread, although fresh/wet yeast is very much perishable and won't last you the apocalypse. Also they probably have no idea how to bake.
You can keep a bag of red star in the freezer for years. It's what restaurant bakers do. Back when I made my own, I'd drop four bucks on a big bag from the restaurant supply, stick it in the fridge and be good to go. Miso and chili paste will also keep pretty indefinitely when frozen.

Mastering sourdough is probably the way to go if you're really looking for sustainability though.

probably not the time for this, but if you can get some starter from a local bakery, that's where the good shit is at. mwah.
