Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I would bet big money part of the issues with getting enough testing equipment is the fact that big pharma has outsourced all their supply manufactuting... to china. You have to figure, you dont just need testing chemicals made. You also need to make the packaging the test equipment goes in. And only one place does that and they ain't sharing.

Small spain news. I wanna do meme roundup tonight, dunno if I will. So I need to come clean, yesterday I said I couldn't access my computer. The brightest amongst you might've realized that seems unlikely if I'm stuck home. Well you know how @Joseph Stalin has been telling us to ensure our computer works before shit hits the fan? I'm ashamed to admit I didn't follow uncle joe's advice. You really fucking should. Thankfully I have some help from friends who know their shit but... well I dunno, I'm reinstalling the fucking OS right now.

Sorry for that sidestory. So, point is. A few things:

1) morale still high, daily clapping was put at 8 so kids can do it too (yeah that was dumb I know) and its still just as loud as yesterday. Dumb videos and memes are a godsend. Hospital personnel seriously considering lobbying so the measures to keep family members away and better logistics and organization are kept after the outbreak because it's honestly made everything much better than usual. Most people obeying the laws even if we all make jokes about how to break them. Some exceptions here and there but they're really minor and hilariously enough the biggest group of lawbreakers was a buncha southamerican turists in madrid that apparently have no fucking sense of self preservation and wound up being shamed in the news by their origin countries. Fucking kek.

2) testing in spain heavily reduced, not because of the government just because of people not going, so numbers in spain now more heavily biased than before. Hilariously enough "dead" number still being tested perfectly so THAT number you can trust, which of course makes it seem way more lethal than it is, thakfully people aren't dumb and have realized this.

3) remember how I told you italians can still access spain just not their flights? Seems a lot of italians figured that out and made their way here. Good for you, don't let people shame you for trying to survive. NOT so good for moroccan workers from italy that have made their way to Jerez. I say not so good because the reason they went there is to seek a boat to morocco since they closed transport to Italy. OI FUCKTARDS! THEY ALSO CLOSED TRANSPORT TO SPAIN! If you're trying to break travel bans at least do it from a country that CAN do it! Now we got a buncha moroccans stuck here 'cause they're fucking idiots. Well... more moroccans than usual. 'Cause morocco didn't bother evacuating before closing frontiers. I get it, their hospitals are trash what would be the point of sending people there?

4) finally. Just so you can laugh at our mess of a political system. Yesterday as the measures got set in president Sanchez did some fucking weird shit. Even though measures were set to do the reunion through electronic means he forbid them and set it to presence only. Now... that seems like he was trying to force measures in without consent by some doesn't it? Well that's what he was doing. See. The wifes of both president Sanchez snd Vicepresident Iglesias tested positive for corona. Both of them tested negative. BUT Iglesias was honest about it. Sanchez didn't admit it until TODAY, a day after. Yeah it was Iglesias he was trying to keep out. Why?

Well. Iglesias is from Podemos, they're the left party. Sanchez is from PSOE, they're center left. Yes I know it literally means "sofialist worker's party of spain" and they refer to themselves as "socialists", it's still center left. Why? Well muricans got a party called "democrats" who vehemently oppose actually democratic primaries and no one questions their shit you think we have to make any more sense?! Point is. PSOE actually has a lot of dirty backstage deals with PP, the center right party. Yes I know they were made specifically with the stated intention of bringing back fascism they're still center right. I know it's stupid this is spain if you try to figure it out you'll feel like you're taking crazy pills! Anyway point is, the center hates Podemos, because they are heavily pro-transparency, which heavily fucks over their mentioned backdoor shit. And due to the more radical left side of the membership they're considered as and called "communists" by everyone else. Yes I know transparency has nothing to do with communism and is actually more of a libertarian measure just, again, welcome to fucking spain.

Point is. You might imagine what kinda measure our commies wanted. Right? Let's also mention the right wing has hated this so much that they've been slandering Iglesias for even daring to bring it up, claiming it "breaks national unity" for Iglesias to oppose sanchez, and the PSOE has thrown a hissy fit of epic proportions but had to push it through because they knew how many votes it'd cost them (don't worrry sanchez you already lost)... so. What was it? A tax break for the self employed.

Fun fact. The spanish right wing when they were in government made some outrageous taxing to self employed and small businesses, which are paid first day of the month independently of actual success, which might explain why our economy sucks. The PSOE planned to forbid all actions by these commerces and still tax them to hell and back. But they had to save face when Iglesias decided to fuck him over.

Welcome to Spain, the only country where communists protect the free market against the capitalist's overtaxing. And people think it's weird we got a holyday devoted to throwing tomatoes at each other... WOULD YOU STAY SANE IF THIS WAS YOUR POLITICAL LANDSCAPE?!
It's oddly comforting to know that no matter where you are in the world, politics is a nonsensical shitshow.

anyone in the US in a lockdown? how's the wuflu treating you and your town?

No joke my home town partied like it was the end of the world last night. Local police had to put down no less then three bar riots. People are continuing to work for now but the stores have been cleared out and the hospitals now have armed guards at the entrances. Probably best anology is a city right before an invading army shows up. Most people I meet seem resigned though. What can you do? It's not like you can move to somewhere else safer like with a hurricane. Nowhere is safer.

I'm cognizant of the necessity of shutting everything down to prevent this thing from getting worse in USA, and I'm glad it seems like a greater proportion of the population is starting to take it quite seriously, but I wonder if this initial wave of panic/prepping-mania will lead to a kind of psychological fatigue later on down the line. Presumably we are still far from the virus peaking in this country, but I imagine a lot of people are already burning through their reserves of fortitude/inner strength/whatever you want to call it.
That’s what I worry about too. I think that people can only last so long in isolation. On top of that, after lockdowns and quarantines end, people might become too complacent again, thus leading to more panic if the virus returns again in fall/winter (highly likely at this point considering no cure has been found yet).

yeah, i mostly worried about reinfection and if/when another wave of this virus occurs when things "Go back to normal". blame metekour for hyping this thing into panic mode. lots of fucking misinformation and i do not want the end of the world. Is the us gonna have a lockdown? Probably? Will it still not be contained? I dont want for the answer to be "yes". China might be lying about it slowing down there.... whats the consensus on that?

for better or worse, it aint seasonal. (look at the cases in the southern hemisphere)

Given some states are snoozing on the issue, as are many countries, that fortitude will turn into grim determination if the disease does become habbening 1.0

Glad to see someone is taking this seriously.

ABSOLUTELY.
Could not have said it better myself.
Just to add, the best thing you can do, actually, is allow yourself to work from home (if possible) and putter around the house and clean up. But don't move around a lot. Like driving around town, panic buying, and organizing and stocking your supplies, and trying to think of every contingency. Meanwhile a fight breaks out with the spouse about managing money, and the kids are all over the place ..,,

You are exhausting yourself and burning a lot of calories in the process.

If China says something assume the opposite of what they are saying is the truth.

Right now, I’m taking anything China says with a bucket of salt. Even if it’s slowing down there, there could still be people dying from the virus that have been unconfirmed (thus making the current statistics on it useless). I doubt everyone in China has access to proper medical care, so I wouldn’t be surprised if infected people were just dying inside their homes (and the cause of death to be hidden from others/remain unknown).

with the inevitably economic recession this will trigger it'll be, uh, interesting to see the morale of people in 6-8 months' time.

France and Belgium have more and more wide spread of age groups getting "severe" symptoms and aggravation from the virus, even if it still statistically hit the elderly much more, their narrative was "it only affects badly very old people, everyone else under 60 years old is fine."

Well, we all know chinese doctors and patients as low as the age of 34 died from it... Now there's a bunch of 30 to 40's year old cases that have their life pronostic engaged in a bunch of hospitals in France and Belgium.

Here's even 3 medics in Belgium in their 40's who are in intensive care being in severe condition / vital pronostic engaged.

Well, we have 2 strains we know of. Maybe we have a third unknown at this point. People really need grasp that every additional infected person is a slight increase, another roll of the dice, to get a different, possibly nasty strain.

I’m really glad it hasn’t, the thought of this taking off in India or anywhere in Africa is not a good one. I’m also curious as to WHY. I would have thought Bangalore at least would get hit, with all the tech and pharma offices there, they get a lot of international travel.
What’s your normal yearly distribution of things that cause pneumonia? I guess I’m thinking of it from the Northern European perspective where we have a very clearly defined cold and wet season which spawns flu and all the other crap we cough from November to March with. Obviously you guys have a different (more than one from north to south too) seasonal pattern. Would you expect to see respiratory/pneumonia cases now? Are you seeing any excess pressure on the system?
Why Africa and India and a few other places aren’t hit is curious. It may just be a case of it hasn’t got you yet, or there may be some environmental factor we aren’t seeing. Or you’re all just tough as old boots. Let’s hope it stays that way.
I hope it's not hitting Africa too hard right now, but they seem to have other fish to fry, Coronachan is a mere footnote to the absolute shit that happens there, this is an article found on my daily rounds:

I'm frankly surprised anyone there lives long enough to die of natural causes.

MAYOR DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY IN DES MOINES

Visit DSM.city/covid19 for the latest updates.
DES MOINES, IOWA — Sunday, March 15, 2020 – Mayor Frank Cownie today declared a state of emergency in the City of Des Moines in response to the community spread of the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) last night identified a community spread of coronavirus in the Des Moines metro and issued new recommendations for individuals with underlying conditions. IDPH added that all Iowans should be prepared for cancellations and disruptions to routine activities.

“I hereby determine that a state of emergency or public danger exists and direct that all gatherings of 250 people or more on public property or right-of-way are hereby prohibited,” Cownie stated. “Any permits or permissions previously granted are hereby rescinded and any amounts paid for such permits shall be refunded upon request.”

Through today’s proclamation, Mayor Cownie has directed the chief of the Des Moines Police Department “to enforce such direction to avoid any such gatherings, whether formally or informally organized.”

“Consistent with IDPH recommendations, I strongly suggest that private gatherings of 250 or more people on private property should be avoided and appropriate adjustment for smaller gatherings with high risk groups should be made,” Cownie added.

The City’s senior leadership response team this week will continue to monitor the community spread of the coronavirus and the potential impact on meetings, City services and public safety.

“This is a most challenging time for all of us, and I want to again thank our neighbors, businesses, residents and faith-based organizations for their patience and understanding as we work through this,” Cownie said.

Craigslist is a fun fucking place to be right now. It's nice to see some people roasting marshmallows over this dumpster fire.
