Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

This is just ridiculous. SARS and H1N1 never produced such hysteria and government protocols. We currently have few cases in Canada yet they are closing schools, businesses and are really to enforce ''social distance''. Back in the day, SARS infected hundreds of people in Toronto and there was virtually none of this. I don't even remember a government statement issue, just nothing.

I'm finding this all completely inappropriate. Pathologists agree it's not particularly deadly to most people and there is NOT many cases in the U.S or Canada yet we have this insane reaction.
Which reminds me: sometimes, I wonder how much slower H1N1's spread would have been if they used the measures as they are doing now with the coronavirus.

I don't have a problem with him addressing it, but that's the only fucking thing he talked about. Google, Kroger, the Fed. I wanna hear about ventilators, PPE gear production. Not the continued profits of his corporate jizzsmoker buddies.

German govt wants 10,000 vents, Italy 5,000, Australia 2,000 etc
The last part of a post from the 1st fucking feb is stuck in my head....

From a message I received not too long ago. The source isn't confirmed but the information isn't outlandish.

Feel free it post this in the thread. I don't want it being associated anyway with me even though risk is low being traced back but never know. Chose you because you posted everyone's favorite south African youtuber that comments on China.

The China situation is way worse than they are reporting. I work in the medical device industry, therefore have direct knowledge of order flow. China started purchasing like crazy more than three weeks ago (there is some noise there due to cny stocking)

China is full of second and third tier hospitals. These basically operate as you would expect hospitals in the west to have been in the 70s, I.e. little modern therapies

They are scrambling to buy devices and the accessories.
The problem is that what they need is high level equipment - a good ventilator for respiratory issues costs $10,000-20,000 (avg stay in ICU per day in china would cost about $2k per patient under normal circumstances). Distributors don't sit on stock and manufacturers are obviously not sitting on huge builds (maybe 3 months global supply) and China needs tens of thousands to modernise. The good news is that most manufacturing of reputable companies is still done in the developed world (e.g GE and Philips and German outfits) so assembly won't be impacted by china new year. China has currently suspended their normal import controls on medical devices. If you have a us (fda) or eu medical device license on the product they will let you import right now no questions asked right now. This is a massive concession.
The bad news is that manufacturers are going to get screwed soon as the supply chain has large ties to china that is out of their control (particularly for electronic components and sum-assembly like pcbs) and quarantining will impact supply.
China can build all the hospitals they want as fast as they can but it is pretty useless if you can't equip them and have trained staff operate them.

People that shout about influenza causing hundreds of thousands of cases per year are missing the bigger picture. Influenza is largely contained in modern systems that can support it through modern therapies.
China is nowhere near there - even if manufacturing can meet Chinas most basic needs now it will crowd out purchases western countries currently expect. Replacement capital purchases will have to be deferred, as well as potentially fewer accessories/consumables, that will mean developed nation's hospitals may have to pick and choose who they treat.
There is going to be indirect casualties.

Why do troons want to take credit for everything? Many troons can’t even manage basic hygiene or grooming, I doubt they were vigilant enough to learn about the virus.

Not sure if this was brought up:

China sends essential coronavirus supplies to Italy
China steps in to help Italy in its time of need as wealthy businessman Jack Ma offers to donate supplies to the US.

MORE ON CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
A planeload of medical supplies, including masks and respirators, has arrived in Italy from China to help the European country deal with its growing coronavirus crisis.
The coronavirus outbreak began in China late last year, but has since swept the globe.
Italy is now the worst-affected nation in the world after China, since the contagion came to light there on February 21.
More:
The outbreak risks overwhelming Italian hospitals, and some key supplies are running low.
In contrast to China, Italy's partners in the European Union earlier this month refused Rome's requests for help with medical supplies as they looked to stockpile face masks and other equipment to help their own citizens.

A team of nine Chinese medical staff arrived late on Thursday with some 30 tonnes of equipment on a flight organised by the Red Cross Society of China.
"In this moment of great stress, of great difficulty, we are relieved to have this arrival of supplies. It is true that it will help only temporarily, but it is still important," said the head of the Italian Red Cross, Francesco Rocca.
"We have a desperate need for these masks right now. We need respirators that the Red Cross will donate to the government. This is for sure a really important donation for our country," Rocca said.
In a separate development, Chinese businessman Jack Ma, who is the founder of the Alibaba Group and among the world's richest people, offered to donate 500,000 coronavirus testing kits and one million masks to the United States, which on Friday declared a national emergency over the outbreak.
In a statement on Twitter, Jack Ma said: "Drawing from my own country's experience, speedy and accurate testing and adequate protective equipment for medical professionals are most effective in preventing the spread of the virus."
"We hope that our donation can help Americans fight against the pandemic!"
Over the past weeks, Ma's organisations have helped provide similar supplies to virus-hit countries such as Japan, South Korea, Italy, Iran and Spain.
"The pandemic we face today can no longer be resolved by any individual country," Ma said. "We can't beat this virus unless we eliminate boundaries to resources and share our know-how and hard-earned lessons."

Guess they have to keep the Belt and Road Initiative going. Either that or it's a joint effort for the Mafia and Triads working together.

So Vancouver is slowly shutting down

For those of you that like to hear anecdotal shit from around the world, half the stores in the city are closed at this point and the grocery stores have started to look like this

It's absolutely bonkers and I've never seen anything like this in my life. Hell, even I am off work for at least a month and my work was shunning me for asking about wearing a mask earlier in this whole thing

There's also an odd reaction to masks happening here. First you have the people who are fine with it, a fair majority but I've had a handful of people also act really weird about them here as well.
had someone earlier today purposefully fake-cough in my direction because I was wearing one.
Basically you have a large minority here acting like youre insane for acting like this is a thing that's happening and taking precautions towards your own safety.

II'm also noticing a LOT more discussion about this from the general public. Seems everywhere you go in this city people are discussing it.

I will say, as someone who prepped from the beginning this panic buying is incredibly entertaining to me and I can't wait to see how much more this country falls into disshevelled chaos

working worldwide case fatality rate at the time I'm posting based on https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

with china's fake numbers:
6,525 / (6,525 + 77,782) * 100 =~ 7.74% working case fatality rate
without china's fake numbers:
3,312 / (3,312 + 10,020) * 100 =~ 24.84 % working case fatality rate

in plain english the working CFR means that worldwide, either 7.74% or 24.84% of infected currently resolve as deaths at the time of posting.

note: this is "working" CFR, CFR can not be determined accurately until after the majority of cases are resolved and the virus has run its course (meaning, infected number is low compared to dead+recovered total)

note2: the most interesting about this is that the majority of recovered cases are from china, where a very high % of recovered are being either re-infected or wrongfully declared recovered and falling ill shortly after. there are barely over 10,000 people worldwide who have recovered from coronavirus outside of china. the chinese numbers aren't even really believable anymore, they're reporting almost 1/5th the rate of death of every other country's data with no other similar outliers.

Afghan cases are now starting to go up.

Ok, apparently, between Turkey and Belgium, 5 million facemasks were lost. The governement ordered them and they did not arrive. Government is now assuming some kind of fraud happened.
We are probably not gonna be able to get any more facemasks any time soon. We are fucked.

They also, suddenly barred the rush hour trains from running. This will result in people not getting to their jobs(including nurses) and people will just crowd other trains. Sometimes I think this is done on purpose, just to fuck with us.

Meanwhile, in the Middle East:

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health on Sunday reported 15 new cases of oronavirus, bringing the total to 118 with three recoveries.

All of the new patients are now in quarantine, SPA reports.
The new cases included residents from Indonesia and the Philippines who were in contact with a previous reported case of infection.

A further five cases involved Saudi citizens who had contact with previous cases.
A case of a Spanish resident coming from Spain is also confirmed.

The ministry added that there are two cases of Saudi women coming from Spain and the UK.
There are two cases for a man coming from Iran and a woman from Iraq.

A further confirmed case is of a Saudiman who had visited Egypt.

Two further Saudi men came from the UK and Switzerland.

Saudi officials said only one of the cases was diagnosed as critical, but the patient is improving and receiving a medical care.

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia is suspending work in all government sectors except health and security for 16 days as part of efforts to contain the coronavirus outbreak, state news agency SPA said early Monday (March 16) morning.

Saudi also closed malls, restaurants, cafes and public parks on Sunday (March 15) while Qatar and Oman imposed entry restrictions as Gulf Arab states broadened efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus and support their economies.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman and Qatar reported new cases, raising the total number in the GCC to 963, with no deaths reported.

Meanwhile, the General Authority of Ports suspended shipping services, excluding cargo, between the kingdom and several countries as part of the precautionary measures to stem the spread of coronavirus. The authority also imposed a number of preventive measures binding on ships coming to Saudi Arabia.

According to a circular issued by the authority, sea trips between Saudi Arabia and 50 countries, including 27 EU states, have been suspended temporarily. The other countries are the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, South Korea, China, EU states, Switzerland, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Eritrea, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, Southern Sudan, and the Philippines. However, there will be no ban for services of evacuation, cargo and trade trips.

The Saudi government has announced eight precautionary measures which take effect on Monday. An official source from the Interior Ministry said that the following preventive measures are part of nationwide efforts to combat the novel coronavirus (Covid-19):

1. Suspend the attendance of employees at their workplaces in all government agencies for a period of 16 days, except for those in the health, security and military sectors, in addition to the cybsecurity centre and the virtual learning system in the educational sector.

2. Shut down suqs and malls, except pharmacies and other food outlets (supermarkets, hypermarkets). Trolleys have to be disinfected after each customer. Hair salons and beauty parlours have been shut down.

3. Restaurants shall restrict work to deliveries and customers shall not be allowed to sit at tables.

4. Ban on gatherings at public places, such as gardens, beaches, restaurants, camps and countryside parks.

5. Suspend all auctions and shut down private venues for gatherings temporarily.

6. Reduce the presence of applicants at government departments by relying on electronic transactions and activating electronic service delivery platforms in the service sectors of all government and private agencies. Business dealings with companies and their representatives will be limited to electronic and telephone communications as much as possible.

7. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development urged companies, private institutions, and charitable societies to reduce the numbers of employees and workers attending workplaces and promote working remotely, taking into consideration the continuity of the basic and sensitive work of the security and health sectors.

8. Oblige companies and establishments to implement the 14-day mandatory home quarantine for their expatriate employees from the day of their arrival in Saudi Arabia before allowing them to resume work. Employees who show symptoms of breathing problems shall also be referred for home quarantine.

Saudi Arabia reported 15 more coronavirus cases, taking its total to 149.

Qatar, which now has 401 cases, said it would ban non-Qatari passengers from entering the country for two weeks starting Wednesday. It announced measures to shield its economy, including 75 billion riyals ($20.5bn) in incentives for the private sector and more state investment in the local bourse.

Oman said that as of tomorrow it would allow in only GCC citizens, and ordered the suspension of Friday prayers, social events such as weddings and closure of public parks.

Local municipalities tweeted directives for the closure of malls, restaurants, coffee shops and public parks, while exempting supermarkets, pharmacies and food delivery. Al Arabiya TV said the measures would apply across the country.

The justice ministry postponed all non-urgent judicial hearings indefinitely.

Regional tourism and business hub Dubai joined the UAE capital Abu Dhabi in closing cinemas, arcades, spas, gyms and parks, prompting a rush on supermarkets where many shoppers wore masks and gloves, residents said.

The Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange closed trading halls until further notice, a day after Kuwait’s bourse did the same.

The UAE recorded 12 more travel-linked infections among various nationalities – South African, Australian, Chinese, Filipino, Italian, Lebanese, British, Iranian, Emirati and three Indians – raising its total to 98. Many cases in the Gulf are linked to travel with Iran, which yesterday raised its toll to 724 dead and more than 13,900 infected.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said yesterday the government had no plans to quarantine cities. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, have criticised the Islamic Republic for allowing their citizens to enter without stamping their passports.

Bahrain just announced its first Corona related fatality (one of two recorded critical cases), making it the first one in the GCC arab countries. There's apparently anywhere between 1000-3000 people still stuck in Iran waiting to be sent back but the first planeful (approx. 160) flew in this past week and about half of them tested positive.

How long do you think it will take grocery stores to recover from this panic buying once it ends? When will this panic buying end?

Today, I decided to confirm a hunch that I had late yesterday, so I stopped at the tiendas on my way into town. Of the four I checked, every single one was stocked to the gills with everything. Food, cleaning products, cold medicines, all zoned & perfectly squared away.

Even better was that they were clean, quiet, and calm, with a normal number of non-gringo customers for a Sunday afternoon.

I spent probably about $30 in each for the equivalent (or cheaper) of anything I could've found at Walmart/Dollar General/Winn-Dixie and had planned on buying anyways, thereby saving myself the stress of having to venture anywhere near those cesspools.
I should've spent another $30 and bought more dried chilis + dry spices & ingredients, but honestly was limited to what I could carry (as is everyone else).

I've been in two of them on occasion; mostly because I have a powerful weakness for tamarindo & fresh tamales, but always because tiendas are a welcome respite from Walmart. Nothing was different from my prior visits, other than voices & TV volume being somewhat understandably muted.

It will interesting to see how Corona-chan affects the Colonías in South Texas and New Mexico - they're basically the equivalent of South African townships for illegals, and have exploded in size throughout the past decade. IIRC there's at least 1,800 of those settlements in Texas alone, with +/-400,000 living in them with very poor sanitation, high rates of alcoholism and only half even have a 'functional' sewage system. Can't imagine things will go well there if/when the virus sets in.

Edit: Come to think of it, it's very bizarre seeing places like this in Texas. It's very easy to think of such settlements of this scale being a staple of sub-saharan African states or South American favelas, but in the continental U.S.? Very peculiar indeed.
