I had a concerning thought. With companies running skeleton crews in IT/security due to quarantine and a majority probably working from home... Will we see an uptick in cyber attacks to kick companies while they're down?
The US government at least is already trying to pass shitty anti privacy/free speech laws in the background of all this, so I don't doubt people with questionable motives would take advantage of this situation also.
Does anyone work in IT for their company and want to elaborate on how their employer is handling this?
As someone who does IT consulting work I can tell you that I am VERY busy because C(I/F)O's didn't want to pay for VPN access or laptops for their employees. The ones that did are sitting pretty and now my teams are having to allow VPN access from insecure (READ: HOME PC's) devices. Before I EVEN allowed that I made sure I recieved a
letter from the HNIC themselves stating:
1. I am doing action under duress with direct orders from (Insert Name of Person losing their shit for poor planning)
2. Myself and my teams are not liable for any virus, malware, intrusion, or fault due to granting access to insecure PC's
3. Management has read all documents, polices, and procedures in regards to security guidelines and protocols for remote access.
4. Our budget will not be impacted due to the increase of licensing and capacity required.
In the end 97% sure nothing will happen but I want to cover my ass and kick that can WAY up the hill as I have been stating for years to move all employees to laptop based system with remote access and I've been denied.
All our services that employees access? The Cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP). There's no reason anyone should be in the building except for shipping and receiving. Meetings? Zoom and such. Phone calls? Soft phone and PBX forwarding. Fuck you MGMT we were prepared for this, this is why you hired me and my people.
As such today will be our last day in the offices, all buildings shut down except for skeleton crew that needs to be present (security, janitorial, shipping, etc.) , and I'm gonna enjoy sipping Nespresso's in my furry slippers BILLING BILLING BILLING. Staff is going to enjoy some sweet bonus checks come the next few months when the PO's come due.
To quote the greatest businessman of all time.
