Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I can't be the only one thinking all these mass shut downs are getting a little ridiculous right? Yes, it's not "just the flu" but at this point it's insane how nearly everything is effectively being set up for financial ruin. The damage from this past week alone is astronomical, I don't know how a lot of companies are going to survive the potential month or more from this.

Yeah, I don't see what the endgame is here. We're most likely going to be dealing with this for the rest of the year.

How long can we realistically extend closures before people start going stir-crazy or service industries start collapsing? People in the US really do not like being inconvenienced.

Had to go to a hospital in Dublin today where some of the corona patients are being treated. No visits allowed and non essential outpatient appointments are cancelled, so the outside doors are locked and you have to get buzzed in, then I had to show a guy at the door proof that my appointment was still on. They seem to have reshuffled the wards a bit, at least in the area I went to. Inside is the quietest I've ever seen it.

I had a concerning thought. With companies running skeleton crews in IT/security due to quarantine and a majority probably working from home... Will we see an uptick in cyber attacks to kick companies while they're down?

The US government at least is already trying to pass shitty anti privacy/free speech laws in the background of all this, so I don't doubt people with questionable motives would take advantage of this situation also.

Does anyone work in IT for their company and want to elaborate on how their employer is handling this?

I work for a security software company and we’re seeing a huge uptick in customers and prospects asking us how to further protect their VPNs and other services due to employees working from home. So, lots of companies are actually thinking about it and being proactive, from what I’ve seen.

As someone who does IT consulting work I can tell you that I am VERY busy because C(I/F)O's didn't want to pay for VPN access or laptops for their employees. The ones that did are sitting pretty and now my teams are having to allow VPN access from insecure (READ: HOME PC's) devices. Before I EVEN allowed that I made sure I recieved a letter from the HNIC themselves stating:

1. I am doing action under duress with direct orders from (Insert Name of Person losing their shit for poor planning)
2. Myself and my teams are not liable for any virus, malware, intrusion, or fault due to granting access to insecure PC's
3. Management has read all documents, polices, and procedures in regards to security guidelines and protocols for remote access.
4. Our budget will not be impacted due to the increase of licensing and capacity required.

In the end 97% sure nothing will happen but I want to cover my ass and kick that can WAY up the hill as I have been stating for years to move all employees to laptop based system with remote access and I've been denied.

All our services that employees access? The Cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP). There's no reason anyone should be in the building except for shipping and receiving. Meetings? Zoom and such. Phone calls? Soft phone and PBX forwarding. Fuck you MGMT we were prepared for this, this is why you hired me and my people.

As such today will be our last day in the offices, all buildings shut down except for skeleton crew that needs to be present (security, janitorial, shipping, etc.) , and I'm gonna enjoy sipping Nespresso's in my furry slippers BILLING BILLING BILLING. Staff is going to enjoy some sweet bonus checks come the next few months when the PO's come due.

To quote the greatest businessman of all time.

The manager of our local store (serves a village/suburb of about 3000) tells me (via a friend, I’ve been home) that business is good. The toilet paper is all gone. She asked him about his supply lines. He says there’s been issues getting goods like your pizza cutter. Hand sanitiser is out but no shortages of anything local /high throughput ( Meat, dairy etc) . The local depot is stocked.
But here’s the rub: they can’t get any local delivery drivers to get them from the regional depot ten kilometres away because everyone is sick. He says it’s been like that for two weeks.
So our local health authorities assure us there are only a few local cases but I would put money on there having been community spread for at least two weeks.
I feel a bit better today - I think I’ve just got a common bug. If this is corona it’s the mildest case ever.

Have a look at all the maritime traffic including cargo between China and North America.

See all those ships inbound to the Americas from Asia?

Neither do I.

Eh I would bet a dollar that some are sick and others might be calling in sick to avoid getting sick

2 weeks. Honestly it breaking now is probably the best time it could happen. Spring break meant people were already saving and preparing for a few days off. 2 weeks isnt that big of a jump if you already had a week off. Having said that, people will be pissed off come june if they still have to live like this. Especially those with kids

As cute as that cat is, any chingchong agents monitoring this thread are now drooling on their keyboards.
If shit moved and felt pain, China would eat it with gusto.

I'm kind of shocked in the last 24 hours how many officials are just flippantly saying "we need to shut down the entire economy" considering three-quarters of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.

We "can" shut down the economy for 4 weeks, provided they also mail everyone a check in unemployment insurance. Don't want to even think how much that would be, but I am sure the number has a whole bunch of zeros in it. The alternative would be really bad though as I pointed out previously. There is major systemic risk to the entire economy atm, and for once its not the Banks faults this time. If the ENTIRE consumer market suddenly doesn't have enough cash on hand to meet their debt obligations it would be a very similar situation as Lehman Brothers. Suddenly a major component of the financial system is bust and and a whole lot of different banks and companies are holding the bad debts. Which means they could go bust.

I wonder how long it will take our fearless leaders to realize the US population generally is ALSO too big to fail. Hopefully sometime before they kick over the apple cart.

As long as the news is reporting hysterical shit, you're OK. As long as they're reporting on happenings and sports events across the globe, you're OK. As long as the Senate is doing this dumbass impeachment and doing crossword puzzles under the table, you're OK. As long as rich blue checkmarks are whining about OrangeManBad, you're OK.

When your newscaster starts talking about random non-stories, only local news even on the 24 hour news channels, sweating, and glancing off to the side a lot, then you worry.
I'm seeing nervous local newscasters, am I just autistic?

Here's a diff link than the one I tried posting first:

it's a great time to be alive. just great.

I can't get into too much detail but the average rise in Zoom traffic over the past 1.5 weeks is something on the order of 400%.

Found something in Norfolk that I've never seen before; at least not anywhere that wasn't someplace equatorial and/or asiatic.

And it's been there since January.
