Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Seriously, not even the maddest doom poster here is claiming it's the end of the world. Not even that Train Guy.
It will have lasting affects simply because of
- how interconnected the modern world is, how entwined we are with China.
- How soft and unused to any hardship we are.
- The economic house of cards was due a recession anyway, this is a hell of a catalyst.
It's a big event, not sure you can call it a black swan as it was sort predictable. But it will shake things up. One of my worries is what political changes may come from this.

actually it's nanomachines. nanomachines, Denton.

at least nobody in this thread is posting that it isn't actually real.

That NYU dean dancing.

720p because I've got a feeling this may end up on TV and I want her nasty skin and dead eyes to be clearly visible.

People pay $80K a year to go to a finishing school in the faint hope it will get them a job as a writer on SNL and now, with in-person classes canceled they can't get a refund. LMAO. Honestly, people like this deserve to have their parents' money taken away.

I think I'm in love.

It's the students' own fault for picking such a useless degree/field. They deserve to lose their money.

You know what I don't get? Where are the hospital selfies? I see a lot of tired nurses, and hear a lot of stories, but I've only seen one personal video from a hospital ward (plus a few generic videos of sleeping patients that could have been taken anywhere). Are the people who get admitted to the hospitals all in comas?

Knowing NYU and the fact it's a useless degree it's probably not their money anyway. They're Virgo Rouge types who flunked algebra but like attention and living in NY and Mum and Dad, mostly Dad come to think of it, probably underwrote their plan to go learn dance from Dean Green for 3 years at $60-80K per year in the hope that they'll get a job with SNL or something at the end of it. Well, that and the fact that the government will probably help out a bit.

Unfortunately, they will mostly survive the virus.

I got 9000 scholarship from Tisch, Perkins Loan, Stafford Loan, and after we've exhausted the savings fund (16000 plus my personal contribution of 2000 after working this summer) the rest is in loans. This year loans will run us about 15 to 20 thousand. The rest of the year's most likely more, depending on what my parents can contribute from their salary's and how much I can earn during the summer. I'll probably be using a total of $90000 to $100,000 in debt (loans) by the time I graduate. I know some students, though, who go completely 100% loans and come out with $200,000 debt. Their reasoning is that it is worth it and most NYU students have jobs coming out of college, especially w/in Tisch because of the location and the myriad internship opportunities Tisch offers.

I'm fairly assured that I will have a job within one month of graduating, if not when I graduate. I plan to Intern my senior year and am hoping that will turn into a job.

It's all about comprimise, though. My mom still doesn't want me to go (she thinks I'll only go for a semester and then come to my senses and move back to TX to live with her and go to community college...so trust me I understand the whole "parents not supporting me" thing) but I am very lucky that my dad is, like rossji, willing to work with me (and like rossji's daughter, I've told my father I plan to pay off my loans at least 50% if not on my own) and get me to NYU.

Poor old Dad is very supportive now but a few years at NYU and she'll be convinced he's part of the evil Patriarchy and decide not to pay off that loan. Particularly when it turns out that not everyone who goes to NYU Tisch gets a job in show business. Some of 'em will end up blowing Weinstein types for an audition while bussing tables.

You know, I'm quite skeptical of the WHO claim that this virus is not airborne. Unless I'm wrong, SARS is considered airborne, MERS is considered airborne, how could this be any different? Is it just because it's less deadly, and they can't spare the resources?

Edit: I guess it's possible that none of them are *actually* airborne, but SARS and MERS are just too deadly to risk it? The negative pressure rooms suggested for SARS does very much suggest that it's at least treated like it's airborne.

Sweet fuck these conferences are an embarrassment. Rambling about ratings on the bachelor and complaining about the media not sucking his cock?

TDS is infesting my soul......
There's nothing wrong with not liking one's leader. Hell, it's more patriotic to be critical of their action.

I think there's a technical distinction between an airborne virus where the viral particles themselves can survive in the air for a significant portion of time and a droplet virus where they need to be in a droplet of coughed or sneezed out moisture (Archive).

That's true and it's your right as an American to rant and rave about how much you hate the POTUS even if you're just parroting Cenk Uygur. It's more helpful to society if your criticism is factually based and original though. Then it's doubtful that original and factually based criticism will actually get back to anyone that matters, so why not just rant away.

New York, you say? That's really interesting that you've used that in your clip, CBS, considering that this hospital you're showing in your video is actually in fucking Italy (source video) What a fantastic coincidence that this hospital in New York looks exactly like a hospital in Italy, right down to patients who all look and dress exactly the same as the Italian hospital patients.

I'm sure that you're not intentionally putting misinformation designed to frighten people with the conditions from the main hospital in Bergamo, the hardest-hit hospital in the country, in the hardest-hit town in the hardest-hit province of Lombardy, Italy without making any mention of the fact that you did this.

No, no. It can't possibly be that you're lying to people. I hate the fucking media.

Can you just delete stuff on reddit because you and a couple of people find it "offensive?"
Yes.

There is an entire cabal of people who operate out of /r/AgainstHateSubreddits to organize takeovers or shutdowns of any and all subreddits they deem "offensive" or "evil." They are mostly radical leftists and socialists/communists (not kidding), so that should inform you on how they define those terms. They're not above posting child pornography in subreddits they want shutdown so they can point it out to the admins to get them nuked. It's believed some of them are admins, and at least a few of them know the site's owners and management personally. When they take over subreddits, they make sure to put moderators in place that they trust to censor discussions accordingly.

Reddit is utterly worthless as a communications platform. It is completely compromised and not useful for discussions, because any conversation that strays too far from "approved opinion and fact" can be shut down immediately. Offensive posts and comments can be (immediately) censored. Users who make such posts too much get banned from subs. Users who post in "naughty" subs get preemptively banned in others (post in /r/the_donald and you'll be auto-banned in hundreds of other subs, whether you've ever posted there or not; the site admins are okay with this). Post offensively enough and you'll cop a site-wide ban.

When I say "post offensively," I don't mean spamming pornography or shouting "nigger" over and over. I mean posting things like "President Trump's doing a great job!" or "I think the Democrats will lose in 2020" in the wrong subs, like /r/politics. Or posting anywhere on the site that trans women are really men. That one's fun. You get a lot of troon rage thrown at you before the banhammer comes on that one.

Consider reddit a "read-only" platform. Treat any information gathered from it with suspicion and attempt to authenticate it elsewhere. Do not participate. It's not worth it.

Covid-19 can survive for 24 hours on surfaces. How long it can linger in the ''air'' is up for debate. Some say it does not, others say it can for up to three hours after an infected person has left the room and coughed and sneezed. Right now it's thought to be from touching. Hand washing is essential.

edit: 72 hours on surfaces. Even that box of cheerios you got from the grocery store recently better sit in your cupboard for a little while.

I know nurses who say patients are dying in our hospitals. But this... this is not helping.

Still, if I was in charge, I would have every fire department who has any to spare lend Self Contained Breathing Apparatus devices (the masks and air tanks you see fire fighters wearing all the time) to the EMTs who have to bring patents to the hospital. At least you can wipe them down and re-fill the tanks, as opposed to N95 masks that are disposable, and are very hard to get in some places.

I'm positive it's true that American hospitals are losing patients, but they're taking the literal, worst-case scenario in the worst country (apart from China) and slapping it in their video to try and play it off as an average hospital in New York, and nowhere in CBS's video do they make any disclaimer that this is the hardest-hit hospital in Italy. I couldn't believe it when I saw that in their video, that's one of the most blatant and obvious lies I've seen during this outbreak.
