Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

On another Corona-Chan news, apparently YouTube doesn't want you to watch Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give you up. Apparently she likes dancing to it so the video won't play.

The link goes to YouTube, but it states it's "Deliberate Misinformation"

Wonder how many people just fell for the most obvious RickRoll in history and clicked on it?

NYC just announced that they're allowing emergency medicaid and testing for illegal immigrants in NYC.
Not for its citizens, illegals specifically.

Cuomo: "We need ALL the ventilators! Trump is gonna get us killed!"
Also Cuomo: "Illegals come on in! Ventilators for all!"

This totally won't make the problem infinitely worse.

Where's one of those "Angel of Death" nurses when you need one?

You can leave those tophats down below

So, should we begin a thread for Coronavirus Derangement Syndrome? Here is some faggot on a couch opining about how he can't stop watching the movie "Contagion" because watching misery porn that resembles a modern RL incident is better than volunteering and helping to deal with the modern RL incident, apparently. Oh, and it's totally the Bad Orange Man's fault for that brain donor couple downing fish pills.

Not archiving because we're going to see a ton of shit like this published in the future....

Folding Ideas has a thread here. He's a major fuck up.

Speaking of fuck ups, look at this shit. Caroline Lucas is the co-leader of the Green Party and its only MP. In practice, this means she's the MP for the hipster hellhole that is Brighton. When a coalition needs to be formed, no one calls her.

Anyhow she's got an article in Metro, a free rag which is handed out to people on the tube in London. Or it would be in normal times, now you'd have to be suicidal to get the tube and even more suicidal to pick up a free paper. Her article is titled 'Why we should not let our response to Coronavirus distract us from the climate crisis?' which only sounds reasonable if you don't think about it for more than a few milliseconds. Then you skim through to the gist of it.

https://archive.vn/1zR1K

We cannot let the short-term response to the coronavirus crisis take us further away from tackling the climate crisis, nor allow decisions taken in the face of an economic collapse lead to more emissions and greater biodiversity loss. Giving bailouts or subsidies to established big industries might be the obvious, even the easiest, way to re-start economies. But it doesn’t make it the right one. Bailing out airlines, as some have demanded, or the oil and gas industry would simply take us back to a system that was driving the climate emergency. We should instead use this moment to invest in our long term future, shifting away from fossil fuels in favour of renewable energies, accelerating the transition to zero carbon economies and halting the destruction of nature. We had the chance to do this before, in the 2008 financial crisis, and we blew it. The coalition government could have used that crisis to invest in our society, creating jobs and building an infrastructure to both mitigate and adapt to the climate emergency.

Right now, without government intervention, a load of industries will go bust and all the people they employ will be unemployed. Lucas's genius ruse is to alter the government bailout so only zero carbon industries get it, which means all the non zero carbon ones will be peacefully sunsetted along with the livelihoods of anyone they employ. It's kind of genius really. Rather than waiting for the Green Party to get into office and shut down all the non zero carbon industries (fat chance), just suggest that the Conservative Party not bail them out at a point when they're about to go bust. The fact that this means that we'd have no airlines, oil and gas companies, car companies and God knows what else doesn't seem to bother her. I wonder how she expects to get from her constituency in Brighton to the House of Commons in London?

Never let a good crisis go to waste I guess. The fact that the coronavirus crisis is a different crisis from the ones the Greens have been crying wolf about doesn't alter Lucas's prescribed cure which is to shut down any industry that idle hipsters in Brighton don't approve of.

In addition to a 'Coronavirus Derangement Syndrome' thread, which I support, maybe we need one of scumbag politicians repackaging their unpopular preferred solution to some problem as a policy that needs to be adopted in the times of coronavirus. Adequacy.org satirized this after 9/11 with an article called Why the Bombings Mean That We Must Support My Politics (Archive) (Archive of the Adequacy.org article, original now sadly gone) Apparently it was originally mocking Eric S Raymond.

Google search borders on omniscience with the amount of data is scrapes. Most of the time it knows what you're searching for after you enter two or three letters. They can predict behavior and sometimes even events. Why the fuck can't YouTube give me a link to the live US Presidential address about the global pandemic as the first result? My screen resolution is at 1920x1080, why the fuck do I need to scroll past some bullshit news blurb (seriously wtf?) and six effectively old videos before I get to the live press conference? The live event is over a full page down the list; you have to scroll.

I'm not logged in and all data is wiped when the browser closes so there's nothing influencing these results. You really can't get a live press conference with the President of the United States up to the top of the list? "Trump conference" isn't clear enough for the algorithm to understand?

The reason for this is that Youtube fixes the results. About the time of Captain Marvel's release, when you had to go through 5-10 critical videos about Brie Larson and Captain Marvel to find anything positive, they announced they would start giving priority to 'legitimate' news sources over independent channels so that 'accurate information' could be found more easily. Around the same time, channels that discussed alternative theories about NASA, 9/11, and others got popular, and Youtube decided it was its 'duty' to put 'accurate facts' on all searches and videos to combat that. Generally it's a link to wikipedia or a link to a news site they approve of.

Since none of that was ever about being accurate, just making sure the information Youtube approves of (be it official critics fluffing Disney or official versions of some event) is prioritized, it manifests in obfuscating the live broadcast of the white house in favor of outdated spin clips of it and a biased news story about it. Apparently they don't bother to do that with non-US residents, because those people don't vote.

What the hell is going on, people are going nuts...

Prosecutors: Engineer deliberately ran train off tracks in attempt to smash the USNS Mercy

The Pacific Harbor Line train derailed Tuesday, running through the end of the track and crashing through barriers, finally coming to rest about 250 yards from the docked naval ship.

Federal prosecutors allege train engineer Eduardo Moreno, 44, of San Pedro intended to hit the ship, saying he thought it was "suspicious" and did not believe "the ship is what they say it's for.'"

The scary part is, he didn't land that far from his target.... Still, he would have fallen like a rock in the water without a single chance of touching the ship anyway. Way too heavy.

He ended up nearly 450 ft away, nice momentum, but really not enough speed before derailing ! xD
LOL that's fucking amazing.

NEARLY 60 PERCENT OF U.S. WORKERS WON'T BE ABLE TO MEET THEIR BASIC FINANCIAL NEEDS UNDER ONE-MONTH CORONAVIRUS QUARANTINE, SURVEY SHOWS
But breadlines are good because at least people are eating.

Goddamn, 2 Trillion dollar bailout and that's not enough. The entire Federal government only spends 4.5 T a year, one would think Americans could get by on that.

Getting infected with a virus to own the libs

As mentioned one of my IT clients is a callcenter. They handle a phone company and a few health insurance companies' billing. So they're closed down now, right?

Nope. Somehow these fuckers got themselves declared essential.

It's about 900 people sitting in an old converted grocery store -- so a giant empty room the size of a football field give or take -- with cubicle walls thrown up everywhere. Air is recycled via HVAC. I don't even like entering the building without a mask WITHOUT a global pandemic going on, because any time one of the phone monkey's children comes home with a cough everyone in the building gets it a few days later.

The second Coronavirus hits this building holy shit. Worse, a lot of the health insurance billing monkeys are various stripe of middle-aged to old ladies, due to men having the self respect to do literally anything else with their lives + old ladies becoming managers and only hiring women / firing the men. I.e., I think every single one of them could go to a grocery store during the high risk time slots.

Of course, the health insurance company's policy states that they aren't allowed to work from home or remote, because, uh, something something HIPAA. So instead, fuck'm, they can just come in and get sick and die.

This is going to get way worse in a few weeks when it hits spots like this.

An interesting article- the US FDA and customs is refusing to allow anyone to import KN95 masks.

This is a Chinese standard identical to N95, except that instead of having rubber bands that go behind the head, they hook behind the ears.

Chinamen do not have especially robust ears by comparison to other humanoids, so it seems like these would work fine for normal people too. Very interesting.

Random masks that don't meet any standard are allowed in.

@JosephStalin is this a conspiracy to make Trump look stupid?

My sister's a nurse in intensive care and she said that she's been seeing more and more cases lately. Posted in a family group chat today to wish her luck because it's going to be chaotic tonight. (This is the UK). Meanwhile my employer is lying to the general public by telling them that they're giving vulnerable employees twelve weeks full paid leave. Lmao, not true - they've given them two weeks. Man, being 'essential' feels so goddamn good. :)

...
Also sucks to be on a cruise: US Coast Guard told aall ships to stay away, and try to offload people in their legal home port. So if you are still on one as a passenger or worker you ain't going home, even if not sick aand even if a US citizen.
...
Couldn't have happened to nicer people. Want to dodge taxes and fly the convenience-flag? Get fucked and offload your passengers there, cunt :D :D :D

But breadlines are good because at least people are eating.

Goddamn, 2 Trillion dollar bailout and that's not enough. The entire Federal government only spends 4.5 T a year, one would think Americans could get by on that.

When you base a society around consuming product and then getting excited for next product, few people have the foresight to save up for a dire situation such as this.

There are many, many Americans that only think about their present situation and live paycheck to paycheck.

Dropped off a box of 100 cloth masks with a sealable flap so the 'filters' can be reloaded. Bought some non-fiberglass high-filter air filters for trucks, cut and sewed them as replacements. Put them in the box with instructions on how to UV lamp the filters (they can be unfolded like an accordian) and how to clean the masks.

I have a sewing machine that needs some dusting off and I think that DIY face masks work as a little sewing practice.

Can you share the info in how to make those cloth masks with a filter?

I'm gonna do a bit of copy/pasta here on an article I found quite illuminating about the trickle down affect of our economy coming to a crashing halt:

Bold is me highlighting important parts. Warning, exceptional hatred of Communist/Socialist ahead

It really hasn't occurred to most of you that businesses fail from not engaging in business. This just tells me the socialist indoctrination centers (schools) have utterly failed to explain how business works.

And let me stick in a note here that no matter what you think of the type of business, they have employees who suffer first. Go ahead and get your hate-on about whomever, but the wage earners will be out of jobs.

Most businesses operate on tiny margins, especially stores and restaurants. Now, restaurants that can do takeout are managing, mostly (at reduced capacity and with reduced employees). But fine dining establishments or sit-down-only ethnic restaurants aren't. They're closed. That means no income for any of the owners or employees, followed shortly by no income for the landlord, who is also probably a small business, so stow your socialist-indoctrinated hate.

Keep in mind that every one that fails means unemployed workers as well. And just because YOU can find a workaround for their product, doesn't put money in THEIR pocket.

Here's a partial list I will expand:

Theaters, who have managers, ushers, concessionaires, ticket takers.

Restaurants and bars who have managers, cooks, servers, cleaners.

Restaurants need food suppliers. If they're not selling food, they're not ordering food from the suppliers.

Specialty retailers--bookstores, hobby stores.

Hotels--no one is renting rooms if they're not traveling for leisure or business. Hotels employ maintenance, housekeepers, clerks, often entertainers.

Convention facilities--who have lots of overhead, and lots of staff and/or contractors for support, displays, decorations, etc.

Venues for music or live theater.

Gyms aren't getting anything without guests and attendees.

MUSICIANS, ACTORS AND OTHER PERFORMERS for whom you've cancelled literally every gig in the next quarter. I know a couple of bona-fide rock stars, who don't earn nearly as much as you think they do, who have to hold out until JUNE hoping for potential shows. Their entire tours have been cancelled.

Event planners for weddings and other events. There's no venues to hold them in.

Anything tourism related--retailers, guides, other activities.

Transportation related to those--airlines (already taking massive hits), tour buses.

Since I write SF, I assume a number of readers do. At least two SF literary conventions have already quit for good. They can't afford to hold everything over another year. They're done permanently. That's more hotel room-nights and concessions not being used next year.

With all those closed, beverage and food concessionaires and distributors are out of work.

Within days, trucking and delivery companies for anything other than the essentials.

Oh, yes--by this point the state is missing out on millions or billions of sales tax revenues that never happened.

There are already lawsuits against insurers. If they have to pay out enough, they close. That will be the smaller insurers, leaving only a few big ones to negotiate with. Who will also lay off people when there are fewer businesses needing insurance.

Now, any single one of these is manageable by the whole, it only sucks rocks for the families in question. But ALL of them are in the process of failing right now. Fortunately, my convention retail business is my part time fun job, but I'm out at least $20,000 in sales for the first half of the year. So far. For people for whom this is their livelihood, I know of several with literally nothing, no income at all, and a $1200 check isn't going to fix it. There's been at least one suicide in my circle, and hotlines report increasing numbers all over. I guess if you don't care how many people you kill to save people, you have a really confusing thought process.

Accountants and payroll companies won't be doing well soon, either. A good number of their clients are going out of business and won't need their services.

In a few weeks:

Lots of car payments have been missed, and there's less of a market for new cars for certain, and probably a glut of used cars. Buyer's market. So car dealers are suffering. I know, a good number of them suck, but it still means their families are short of food and money. Mechanics may do well, maintaining cars for those who can afford them. Dealers and manufacturers are going to take a bite. That's more layoffs.

The restaurants that did stay open are going to struggle at this point. Who has money to spend out? So they're going to lay off even more people.

The food demand drop is going to affect farms and ranches.

And once the economy is on a slide like that, it just keeps going. Experts are predicting worse than the Great Depression.

Doctors are knowledgeable about medicine. Do you know who the most famous doctor put in charge of an economy was?
Che Guevara, in Cuba. Okay, so a racist, homophobic, hypocritical murderous thug isn't really a valid comparison. But he knew nothing of economics and it showed.

The point is there are ZERO non-essential jobs in even our nominally free (though massively government controlled) market. If a job doesn't generate income, it goes away.

The question comes down to: How many people are you willing to starve and murder over a virus that the experts agree won't be significantly worse than the four previous major viruses, in the last half century? And if you can't name them without looking, then your opinion is irrelevant.

EVERY business is essential to the owner, the employees, and the families.

Any politician speaking of a "non-essential" business is an idiot and should be removed from office. Because lamppost decorators need work, too.

ADDENDUM:

https://www.451alliance.com/
"VAST DISRUPTIONS AHEAD IN EMPLOYMENT DISTRIBUTION

The US economic outlook depends largely on the degree that businesses respond to the pandemic crisis by laying off workers. Until recently, they have largely avoided the tactic. But as so much demand has vanished almost instantaneously, the pressure on companies to reduce costs is urgent.

The five sectors experiencing the most direct and immediate collapse in demand or facing government-mandated shutdowns because of coronavirus are air transportation; performing arts and sports; gambling and recreation; hotels and other lodging; and restaurants and bars. Together, they accounted for $574 billion in total employee compensation in 2018, about 10% of the total, and spread among 13.8 million full-time equivalent workers. Unemployment claims are expected to skyrocket in the coming weeks."

As far as the socialist bleating about "2 million deaths" and "companies with sketchy priorities," feeding our families IS our priority. Feel free to start writing checks.

I am due for a new car soon, I think it's time to call up all the dealers in a 100mi radius and ask them for any returned leases that they want to sell...for cash.
