Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Speaking of which: Skid Row infections in LA confirmed, anyone here shocked?

Skid row infections in Southern CA have been a thing since January.

A friend of mine is an EMT near San Diego. There's a group of other EMTs throughout the state, they share notes on strange goings-on.

They've been picking up bums dying of pneumonia, taking them to ERs, only for the bums to get stabilized and discharged back onto the streets.

Some percentage of them were positive and died in gutters. A larger percentage found their way to shelters and infected others. A smaller percentage were sent to other cities.

Completely serious with this next part - there's a segment of EMTs / med techs / doctors who believe these people need to be put in camps or euthanized for the good of everyone else. Most homeless in CA are addicts, legally insane or Mexican, they just can't take care of themselves and have a bizarre reason to spread the disease. Watch mortality rates in ERs over the next few months, the spike will be significantly above average compared to the rest of the Nation.

This leans into what I was thinking for the reasoning behind the message of "a facemask won't really help for the general population". There's soo many other vectors to be concerned about and diligence required that while effective for that one transmission vector, it won't help you from the others.

I've got one of those masks you use for spray painting with replaceable filters, based on the idea that if I'm in an environment where there are droplets containing the virus I don't want those droplets going into my lungs any more than if I'm in an environment with droplets of paint I want to keep those out of my lungs too. Someone recommended 'em a few hundred pages back.

Now there are issues with mask cleaning. Survival Lily pointed out that the best you can do is to leave the mask outside and hope UV and time deactivate the virus and that it's not drifting around in the air. Mind you, you can also just treat the outside of the mask as contaminated and only touch it with gloves. I got some nitrile gloves which were then still available. When I come back in I put all the clothes I wear into a hot wash/dry cycle and then iron them and take a shower. Anything I buy I wipe down with bleach-based cleaner.

Now is this foolproof? Definitely not. If the virus is endemic in the air and is airborne transmissible I'll probably get it, assuming I haven't already got it and recovered. Is it better than 'stay inside if possible, wash your hands when you come back inside, don't touch your face when outside'? I reckon it must be because I do all that shit too.

Now you can make a case for 'Most people are fucking idiots, let's give 'em the simplified version about hand washing'. Fair enough, that might well be the best option. What I object to is saying 'Masks don't work. Don't buy one'. When I go out shopping I see a lot of people in masks, a mix of surgical, N95 and decorating masks. Masks clearly do work and it makes sense that they work given respiratory viruses'' main way to infect you is if you breathe them in, not because you touched a surface someone infected touched just after they contaminated their hands and then you just touched your eye or your mouth and they worked their way through to your lungs. The easiest way for a virus to infect you and wreck your lungs is if you breathe it in because then it doesn't need to travel. I'm not even sure you've got the right ACE2 receptors anywhere but your lungs.

Sure it'd be better if I had the full CDC recommended set up and didn't reuse masks, but that's just not possible to get. And in the study that I linked to it was just 'N95 mask or nothing' in a chaotic Chinese hospital, not in a US CDC regulated environment where people don and doff the full CDC PPE gear correctly and they still found pretty good evidence it was worth wearing them.

And look, it seems the CDC agree

Looks like the recommendation to wear masks is coming soon -

I decided to not get the masks. The amount of work to properly sanitize on a constant basis is something I am too lazy to do; so the masks didn't seem like a good buy.

Depending on where you live you might be able to just leave the mask outside. UV and time might inactivate the virus and you can just treat the outside as contaminated too.

I wonder if that high mortality rate in NYC is partially due to the homeless that cycle in and out of shelters in the winter.
Can you not just get a can of Lysol and spray?
Lysol is as scarce as alcohol, masks and nitrile gloves in NYC.

POPULATION DENSITY is the most important factor when it comes to transmission. Megacities are DEATHTRAPS. Look at the PDF I posted last page. Compare madrid to the less dense areas of spain and fucking WEEP. And now compare the size and debsity of madrid with those of New York. Then take into account that Madrid's population is mostly docile and has been helpful in stopping contagion from day 1, whereas New York is gangland extraordinare where dindus run rampant and Trump's Chosen People hoard bollocks. Finally realize madrid got infected from a few german businessmen, whereas NY has the ultramess of filth that is CHINATOWN. How can it NOT get fucked?!

Oye - estás exajerando tremendamente.

It ain't that bad cariño.

Please - do not spread hysteria via rumor and hearsay. Genocide is not on the agenda. I have yet to meet a health care worker who would deny treatment to an "undesirable" due to being "undersirable" or put people in death camps. Nonsense. And if he wrote down such a thing, he is risking his own license as you could report him to state boards for that.

Over half the workforce in Southern California is Hispanic, so what you are sharing can not be true, unless Mexicans are about to kill their own. The state of Mexican-ness is not a pathology, medical or social.

Okay. I've actually bought three cloth masks and I don't really go out much. Probably gonna have it soak on some bleach, soap, and water then rinse and hang to dry while I have two spares dry.

I have an suggestion for the name of that action... Aktion T4

My mom send me 20 masks she made herself, i gave some to my friends and wash them at 95° works good enough,

Hopefully there's a distinction between "wont treat all" and "wont treat any". I wonder how many long term coma vegetables there are in the world using up ventilators and hospital beds.

I have some relatives with a vegetable kid (now adult) who's been languishing in a hospital bed on a vent for some years now. I'm not proud to admit this was the first thing I thought of when I heard about the triaging in Italy. I wonder if folks in their small town will start taking umbrage at losing a family member to a ventilator shortage, if/when the coof makes it there.

These are going to be the tough decisions we as a nation we will have to make. But years on a ventilator? That is no way to exist. The compassionate thing to do would allow them to pass.

comments that aged well, probably late, don't care.
100% certain nothing will happen, people are just hyping themselves into a frenzy again. Of course it's good that precautions and all that are being taken but people acting like oMg NEw P lAGuE aHHH, have they forgotten the 10+ or more new viruses in the past like 20 years? Swine flu , bird flu etc etc. Many whom COINCIDENTALLY always originate from China?

Everyone will have moved on from these in some weeks/month 100%
Three months later...

I love how people are freaking out about this when actually all the fatalities have occurred in elderly people with pre-existing medical complications. It's no deadlier than the flu. At this stage the worst it's going to do is kill Barb!
Barb is dead as fuck. And so are a bunch of her friends. And a couple celebrities. And some people in their 30s. And a teenager. And a couple babies.

Here's two videos from Jan 17th and 21st

Fuck masks, I've been walkin around like I'm bout to stick up a joint.

It's more that NYC is one of the most concentrated centers of old people in the US. Especially the areas that are getting most hit. Queens Brooklyn and the Bronx. Add that to certain groups such as the (((Hasidim))) who after getting one of the worst spikes in New Rochelle, still are failing to get the "Social Distancing You Fucking Morons" message down in Brooklyn.

Just a casual question:

Have you ever been to the States?

Your posts present a very odd set of information, and even more off-beat interpretation of things that go on here.

Don't take it as an attack: personally I find your point of view interesting. But you seem to lack a sense of the demographics and cultural geography of this place.

Yes, the States supports Israel, and yes, many can concede that that perpetuates an injustice against the Pal's.

Yes, The States has been cruel to Iran. But Zionism alone is not the motivation.

Yes the issue with Joos is complex. But you don't think that it is irritating for the majority of Americans, too? Including many Joos?

Catch is, most people don't like talking about it because we can't run around with a whisk broom and dust pan, cleaning up minor injustices that happen in States that are hundreds of miles away.

But plenty of Trump's Chosen People are dying of the coofs in New York. Not sure if that is good news to you, or bad.
He hasn't. He's only interested in spreading Iranian propaganda

Any guess as to when we will be on the other side of this?

Right now, in LA County 1: 2,864 are "oficially" infected. Just citing that as an example, your areas are probably different.

I read in an article, that the pandemic will end, when there is nobody else to infect. Or they come up with a vaccine...

It is going to take a while, if we are going to continue to "flatten the curve" for enough people to have been infected so that there is basically a collective immunity. And even then, are we sure it won't mutate like the Influenza virus?

Any insights into this? Anybody have a good source on this? Any projections?

I am having my doubts about China "paying" for this. What are we going to do really? Nuke 'em? Sure you can place economic sanctions, but are we going to be in much of a position to turn down cheap consumer goods when we are in a global recession?

Mutate is not the scary word that everyone thinks. They are actually hoping it mutates. Typically when a virus mutates, the more successful mutations (for the virus) are the ones that are less lethal and less inconveniencing to the host. That's largely how a few of these type outbreaks ended unexpectedly. The virus mutated to a less lethal form, which quickly spread a herd immunity against the more lethal variant.

Thanks man, now I don't feel like I have to shit my pants with fear.
