More than 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week. The Democratic National Convention has been postponed, and the global death toll exceeds 50,000. The Navy removed an aircraft carrier’s captain after he spoke up about an outbreak.
Again why do people like China so much? Why would the WHO cover for China if they barely pay for it? Does the Third World really like China compared to the west?
I guess you can pay 15% of the budget.
Or 2% of the "budget" . All depends where you spend it.
I try not to keep sperging on about this, but:
We might not be at war with China, but China is at war with us. Corruption of local officials , subversion, theft, a thousand different deniable acts of harm. Very effective way to bring down some stupid barbarians who have inexplicably taken control of your planet and have a better military.
Well, look, most of it will get caught in post-donation testing.
It'll just be the time of professional nurses being wasted to no good effect taking the blood. Professional medical techs wasting their time running even more stringent testing than before. Supplies wasted. All so that faggots can feel good about themselves. It's not like there's a crisis on or anything.
That's without looking at the second-order effects. The US Red Cross says it's OK for GRIDS carriers to give blood? Well, that will be inflicted on other countries, right down the line.
Trump got Botswana to make spreading GRIDS legal. How long until the next 'conservative' President conditions aid on their blood service allowing GRIDS carriers to give blood? This will have many, many bad effects even outside the US.
... Had they sounded the alarm instead of lying to everyone we would not be having to do all of this on the fly as the pandemic explodes exponentially. We would have had at least 3 to 5 months to prepare. In that context, its not all that surprising it seems policy makers are flailing about. Because they are.
I know its been said so many times, but when we are on the other side of this there had better be severe repercussions for China and the WHO.
Any guess as to when we will be on the other side of this?
Right now, in LA County 1: 2,864 are "oficially" infected. Just citing that as an example, your areas are probably different.
I read in an article, that the pandemic will end, when there is nobody else to infect. Or they come up with a vaccine...
It is going to take a while, if we are going to continue to "flatten the curve" for enough people to have been infected so that there is basically a collective immunity. And even then, are we sure it won't mutate like the Influenza virus?
Any insights into this? Anybody have a good source on this? Any projections?
I am having my doubts about China "paying" for this. What are we going to do really? Nuke 'em? Sure you can place economic sanctions, but are we going to be in much of a position to turn down cheap consumer goods when we are in a global recession?
MedCram update. He's working in an ICU at present, dealing with coronavirus patients. The bit at the start where he talks about donning and doffing PPE is kind of horrifying. Clearly just washing your hands is not seen as being sufficient by the CDC - you need to two masks - N95 and a surgical mask, a hair covering, a gown and gloves and when you come out of a room with negative air pressure room with patients you need to be very careful how you take them off to avoid contaminating yourself.
POPULATION DENSITY is the most important factor when it comes to transmission. Megacities are DEATHTRAPS. Look at the PDF I posted last page. Compare madrid to the less dense areas of spain and fucking WEEP. And now compare the size and debsity of madrid with those of New York. Then take into account that Madrid's population is mostly docile and has been helpful in stopping contagion from day 1, whereas New York is gangland extraordinare where dindus run rampant and Trump's Chosen People hoard bollocks. Finally realize madrid got infected from a few german businessmen, whereas NY has the ultramess of filth that is CHINATOWN. How can it NOT get fucked?!
Listen muchacho, while New York City has shit areas with hood rats running wild, most of it isn't like that, despite the occasional spillover. The population density is a huge factor in those shitty NYCHA buildings warehousing the poor, elderly and disabled where elevators work some of the time and maintenance depends if someone feels like working. The same people making your shitty Chipolte meal or delivering your mushroom tofu burger travel on subway/bus from these dumps and back again. That's how it spreads.
NYC didn't have to be fucked had the mayor listened to the Dept of Health and made sure hospitals had what they needed, shut down schools/playgrounds and directed city agencies institute remote work when employees were calling in sick. Our governor slashed payments to NYC for Medicaid at a time when every illegal is pouring in for the free health care gibs. So while the population is and can be immensely exceptional, the truth is the people in charge are absolute morons whose self-serving policies made it possible for the virus to run unabated and overload the health care system.

This leans into what I was thinking for the reasoning behind the message of "a facemask won't really help for the general population". There's soo many other vectors to be concerned about and diligence required that while effective for that one transmission vector, it won't help you from the others.
Because when shit started to hit the fan, Gavin Newsom surprised every single person in the country by speed-dialing the White House and asking for their advice on how to handle the outbreak. He was one of the first governors to do that, and as a result of following their advice and the facilitation of federal help, the infection rate in California nearly flatlined. Newsom had the good sense to shut the fuck up and just do his job instead of playing politics, and it worked.
He pulled in every single state asset that he could find, he started recruiting retired civilian and military medical personnel, he took in anyone who was able to volunteer for non-medical duties so that the medical staff could get freed up, and he went nuts on finding locations for military 'field hospitals.'
New York, on the other hand, just danced around like brain-dead idiots and kept encouraging people to go out and party in Chinatown (And I mean that they literally did that) and took every opportunity to ignore every piece of advice that the Federal government was offering them until their infection rate just exploded.
For once, California actually didn't fuck something up. I was shocked because I would have bet my last dollar that California was going to be the Ground Zero for this outbreak in the U.S., but something managed to scare the shit out of Newsom and he got to work.

In an effort to grab the early article that may have been included in the OP, here are some articles from my search results between Oct 1 2019 -Jan 20, 2020
Chinese health authorities said they are investigating 27 cases of viral pneumonia in the central city of Wuhan, after rumors on social media suggested the outbreak could be linked to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
Health experts have been dispatched to the central city of Wuhan after 27 people were struck down by viral pneumonia. A 2003 outbreak of the highly-contagious SARS virus was covered up and killed hundreds of people.
found an article from November, citing a pneumonia type plague in China, but my brain can't be arsed to absorb and process the info at the moment, but i can C&P
Reporter: "I am a crusading journalist and you are clearly evil! Why does this "President" persist on helping BIG BUSINESS CORPORATE INTERESTS instead of the poor, and my second question, when will you admit that Full Communism Now is the only correct solution to fix this?"
Spokesperson: "I will pretend to misunderstand that question and pretend I am answering something else."
That's pretty much it, but there's still some confusion over messaging on the matter. Derbyshire plod pushed this message during its disastrous drone video.
This is likely to smooth out as the guys who gave Boris his big General Election Victory got drafted back in to focus messaging and unify it. Which is why the "Stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives" turned from the hideous red/white/blue to the yellow/black warning label we're seeing published everywhere now.
Honestly though, there's a lot of countryside that'd make a lot of sense for people to go for a walk if they'd just space out. The issue is too many folks don't have "other places" to go chill and socialise like they normally would.
Yeah, that's the only plausible explanation I could think of too. It seems very heavy handed and annoying though. Does the risk-reward calculation really say ban people for going for a drive, or country walk, yet the streets near me are busier than usual with people taking a constitutional walk, or kids on bikes. All social distancing fairly well, but if this is airbourne, they're infecting each other.
There's something about how this lockdown is going down that is making me twitchy. The non-paranoid explanation is that it is a chaotic developing situation, and individuals and groups are making mistakes as they work things out. The paranoid in me thinks that something else is going on, though I've no idea what. That helicopter was back again tonight, doing a slow scan .
Some resources about the UK lockdown.
A local rag I found when Googling. Note Cullompton is a small nice little touristy town in lovely countryside. This seems ridiculous. That;s probably half the active officers for North Devon .
Archive of police law blog posted earlier . A couple of links from that blog. The college of policing link clarifies the basic rules, and seems reasonable.
The Act contains a lot of provisions , always worrying when legislation is rushed through, and this is extremely rushed compared to normal timescales. I haven't had time to read through it all (so, probably like all the MPs how voted on it) . I'm worried that "Total Fascistic Domination" is hidden in the small print. E.g. They have added powers for forcibly removing suspected infectious persons.
2)The public health officer may, subject to sub-paragraph (3)—
(a)direct the person to go immediately to a place specified in the direction which is suitable for screening and assessment,
(b)remove the person to a place suitable for screening and assessment, or
(c)request a constable to remove the person to a place suitable for screening and assessment (and the constable may then do so).
Dragged off by the police against your will, because they suspect you may have a cough is now nice and legal . No mention of steel boxes on the back of pickup trucks, so count your blessings eh?
If someone with more time / legal training / autism could look at the text of the act see what we're in for that'd be great. I might see if I can find any legal blogs that have looked at this.
Had a quick search, and found these links: UK Human Rights Blog . archive . Measured response (not crazy hippies). Headlines 2 year sunset clause. hmmmm The Bingham Centre. archive . "The most sweeping powers ever taken by the UK Government outside of wartime ." UK Constitutional Law Association . archive . This is concerned with the way the Act was rushed through. MPs not present due to distancing, then dismissed Parliament.
Side note:
Six countries have announced they will (temporarily) leave the ECHR. UK and Hungary not among them.
(Armenia, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Moldova, Romania) Euractive , archive
ALSO - I don't think the archive of the Act worked , as it didn't follow all the links . Is there a better wget like system for doing a deeper archive, expanding all the sections?
Isn't readiness information like "so many of my people are sick I'm having manpower issues" sort of.....I don't know........FUCKING CLASSIFIED STATUS INFORMATION ABOUT A MAJOR ASSET or something?

I don't hate Dr. Fauci, but he has been incredibly inconsistent/dishonest about the masks.
Fauci: "If you're healthy, you don't need the masks; they don't protect you."
Also Fauci: "We need to make sure our doctors and nurses have enough masks to protect them and ensure their health."
Just fucking level with Americans and tell them to save the medical masks for doctors, and to wear homemade masks or scarfs because they're infinitely better than nothing.
It's been proven that yes, while cloth masks do allow for germs to escape when you cough or sneeze, they only make the germs travel in inches instead of feet. So yes, they are actually effective, especially when practicing proper social distancing.
Last week, Trump was telling medical workers to wear scarves in the case of a shortage, and this week Dr. Fauci is telling people that if they feel healthy that they shouldn't wear masks (even though an incredibly large amount of people are asymptomatic without knowing it).
Everybody should be wearing masks when they go out in public. It's common sense! South Korea implemented this, and they are by far the most successful nation when combating this virus. You can even make masks out of napkins and rubber bands, and they will protect you far better than wearing nothing.
However, if these people do end up going on vacation this summer as soon as quarantine ends come June/July, that should answer the question as to whether they've been stashing away money in that old sock hidden under their mattress. I really don't think that people saving up to go an vacation should be lying about how they supposedly don't have any money for quarantine. They could also just skip vacation and work during summer to make up for lost time. We've been seeing all these posts here on KF about how people are already treating quarantine as an extended vacation as it is, not taking social distancing seriously and going to the beach, people in Sweden trying to use the quarantine period to go on skiing vacations to the point of Sweden shutting down their ski centers to discourage that, etc. I am obviously excluding everyone who is genuinely poor with a JOB (Just Over Broke). I also totally understand people wanting to stretch their legs after two-three months of quarantine coming out of their cabin fever, but people, don't lie about how you don't have any money when you obviously do. Everyone flaunting their fucking swag all over Instagram until it's time to get thrifty under quarantine, then all of a sudden it's "boo-hoo, we got no money to do quarantine"? Not buying that.
I don't even want to think of what's going to happen down there. Observation - we get a lot of produce/specialty foods from Mexico. Supplies from Mexico could be affected. A lot of "American-made" vehicles/parts are produced in Mexico. Believe that production will be affected, too.
Speaking of breadlines, look at this footage of poor people waiting in line to receive a food package at the local charity in Italy. No one is practicing social distancing:
For those of you who keep asking "but will it mutate?":
While researchers caution they’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg, the tiny differences between the virus strains suggest shelter-in-place orders are working in some areas and that no one strain of the virus is more deadly than another. They also say it does not appear the strains will grow more lethal as they evolve.
“The virus mutates so slowly that the virus strains are fundamentally very similar to each other,” said Charles Chiu, a professor of medicine and infectious disease at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

It's been so surreal to watch this unfold. I wish I could go back to the days when I could entertain the notion that maybe it wouldn't get that bad outside of China.
