Here's how it works. First of all, DRACO is what's referred to as a biologic. It's a protein expressed by modified E. Coli cells in a bioreactor which is then purified by column chromatography, separating out just the specific protein.
In the standard formulation, DRACO consists of an HIV TAT transfection tag combined with Protein Kinase R and Apoptotic activating factor 1 binding domains, although other formulations exist.
Basically, when DRACO is injected in someone's body, it uses the TAT delivery tag to enter the intracellular space of pretty much every cell in their body. Once inside, it looks for viral double-stranded RNA above 30 base pairs, which is non-human. If there isn't any, it does nothing. If viral dsRNA above 30 base pairs is present, the DRACOs will begin binding to it with their PKR ends, and then, their exposed Apaf-1 ends will bind and crosslink the cell's own caspase, immediately ordering the cell into apoptosis. It's non-toxic and does absolutely nothing to healthy cells.
In short, it's like a mini-Judge Dredd that goes into all the cells in your body and, if it finds viral RNA in them, it goes "Standard Execution", BANG.
It also should work on SARS-CoV-2, in theory, because even though SARS-CoV-2 is a single-stranded RNA virus, the transcription process in human cells creates double-stranded RNA that DRACO can detect.
DRACO was injected into mice (with no ill effects for the mice) and then, those mice were injected with influenza, and nothing happened. It totally prevented them from being infected.
It's like a universal vaccine, and it confers 8 to 10 days of protection before the proteins break down.
This thing was investigated about 9 years ago by DARPA as a possible broad-spectrum antivirus for US troops to use in case of pandemics or bioweapon attacks. A grant was lined up from the Templeton Foundation, but it fell through when they were reorganized.
Eventually, the creators got so frustrated with the lack of funding, they turned to Indiegogo crowdfunding for money, but they still weren't able to get enough.
