I'm so tired of being called a hero right now...
I work in retail. I have been working in the industry for about 10 years. I have been a cashier, a department lead and a manager. During these 10 years people did not even register my name when they asked for a manager. And that is the least of the social offenses I, and MANY of my peers had to...
I work in retail. I have been working in the industry for about 10 years.
I have been a cashier, a department lead and a manager.
During these 10 years people did not even register my name when they asked for a manager.
And that is the least of the social offenses I, and MANY of my peers had to endure, because apparently, the job I was doing was only for High school kids or for idiots.
I have been spit on( No, NOT figuratively, actually literally), stabbed in the arm, and belittled.
All for just above minimum wage.
Then comes the Corona-crisis!
All of a sudden I'm a fucking hero!
People still spit on me and my job choice, and they don't respect personal space even in this fucking pandemic, infecting my colleagues and me, probably.
But the media, and celebrities say we're heroes!
Like in every commercial break between the corona specials.
We're not. We are just the unlucky assholes who you can leave your frustration at right now, because apparently it's "ridiculous" to not let you buy 24, 24-packs of toilet paper.
And we're still getting minimum wage or maybe slightly above.
The government here in Germany, in their unlimited gratitude, announced that paying bonuses to retail staff is left to individual companies and corporations.
OF COURSE most of them will choose to pay their workers more than they have to. /sneed
At least that bonus would be tax-free.
I do have to note REWE as one of the big retailers taking this seriously. They reserved 20 million € for bonuses. That may be not that much for each individual but it's 20 mil off the balance for worker's sakes.
I'm only a LITTLE bit bitter that I stopped working for them a few years ago.
But then again, any and every one of those people actually getting this bonus, earned it ten times over.
But it's not just the pay. It's the whole social standing of my chosen profession. It's fucked.
I spent three years learning to be a good retail manager. Most of the people doing my job did that.
And they're still seen as easily replacable idiots, not just by corporates but by the dumb customers too.
But all of a sudden we are the heroes, keeping life in the city going.
Guess what? That was always the case.
We don't need your faux congratulations now.
It won't keep us healthy, nor will it improve our low wages.
Don't put on a fake show, by calling us heroes.
Just treating us like fucking human beings when NO cameras are on you would already make my life better. And those of countless other people.
I like to imagine people will appreciate what we do, a lot more when covid-19 is actually like a flu...
...but I think, most of them will go back to literally spitting on us when this crisis is over.
Actions speak more than a thousand words.
Don't call me a hero, so that you feel better.
Just treat me like a human being and we're already at the minimum of human interaction.
I'm sorry for writing a huge shit-post that's basically just venting.
I just think all this media bullshit is making me sick faster than the virus could.
EDIT: Hopefully cleaned of typos...
EDIT2: Nope...still typos there. I'm too drunk(on my first day off in two weeks, just to add that!) to be making threads right now I guess. >.>
