And it was by far the most expensive to make. The studio is paying more people higher salaries now than they were back when Borderlands 2 released. Not saying they're hitting the average now (although Schreier doesn't make it clear how up to date those stats are), but that's undeniable.

The game cost 140 million before marketing. Many multiples of Borderlands 2's budget.

The game sold the best in the series, but wasn't commensurate with the budget increase.

Bearing in mind that the devs still got their bonuses, and depending on your calculations, got a decent 5 figure bonus on average. Just not 10s of thousands or the 6 figures that were flying around the studio 7 years ago.

I get it, Pitchford making 12 million sounds unfair, but the company is completely private, and he owns 50% of it. It makes sense, and I'm not seeing the problem.

And to be clear, if I didn't have to defend Pitchford, I wouldn't. But it's not really just Pitchford this article, and Kotaku are trying to build a narrative against. Not alone, at least.

"Billion dollar brand" is accurate for Borderlands. Zelnick was not talking about Borderlands 3 making a billion dollars. To suggest that Borderlands 3 made a billion dollars by itself is ludicrous on it's face.

I don’t think anyone is defending the honor of Randy Pitchford, but trying to expose the dishonest reporting in that article. They are claiming that these employees were cheated out of a bigger bonus, but no one, including the people here who are just using this as an opportunity to dunk on the porno magician, seems to be taking into account that these bonuses are based on profits. You can point out sales figures all you want, but if the game was more expensive to produce, then the profit margin is smaller along with the bonuses. It sucks, but that’s how things are sometimes. And I severely doubt that any contract those employees have promises a raw dollar amount for their bonus. This is Business 101 shit.

Like I said, I really don't care about Randy Pitchford here. I'll openly say that the guy is quite the sped in many other ways. I mean, the guy looks like a car salesman in a Michael Bay Transformers movie. But that's besides the point here.

If you see me as defending anything, take it as me defending private enterprise away from heavy government regulation or unnecessary unionization in tech. Against the inaccurate, slanted reporting in articles like this, of which Schreier has promulgated multiple times. He did it not 3 weeks ago with Naughty Dog. But no one at Naughty Dog has a "punchable face" in the way Pitchford does.

I'm arguing on behalf of the facts. Anything that defends Pitchford is purely by proxy.
That being said, don't think that Pitchford's PR being so shit isn't cutting in favour of Schreier's illegitimate narrative. I'm reminded of how Joe McCarthy has been painted as the Hollywood boogeyman over the House Un-American Activities Committee, despite the lynchpin of that being Roy Brewer.

If you can't understand that when counting their money, there's no amount of logic that can convince you of basic realities when it comes to business.

It's also worth mentioning that Plano Texas is a lower cost and income area compared to cities in California (the hub of US game development), and even around 10% cheaper than Austin Texas. Whether that was, or is taken into account when making the statement that they have a lower than average salary is unknown. But it's a factor worth noting here.
