The Final Fantasy Thread

If I had to do a ranking of the main Final Fantasy games I played.
  • FF7: 9.5/10
  • FF8: 7.5/10
  • FF9: 9/10
  • FF10: 9.5/10
  • FF12: 8/10
  • FF13: 5/10
  • FF15: 7/10
Ff12 will always have a special place in my heart. Purely a lore based story line. No drama and fuckbois with cliche bullshit from Nomura. It may not have been the most memorable FF story line, but the world building and just game mechanic was pretty good.

I haven't really liked any Final Fantasies past IX.

With X I mostly liked the gameplay, the sphere system, and even enjoyed messing around with blitzball but found the story and most of the characters dull. I also thought the maps were too linear and cramped, and a lot of the side content felt like tedious busy work just to pad out the game length. 12 had interesting lore but again I didn't like the actual plot or characters, and I didn't like the offline MMORPG feel of the gameplay. 13 just sucked in every category. 15 had potential but even with all the additional content it still felt like half a game.

I wished the FF7 remake was on the Xbox One. The only one I got to play was the remastered edition of FF12. FF13 was linear as hell.
The funny thing is that FFXII isn't even a Final Fantasy game. I have no idea what it is, but it is definitely not a Final Fantasy game. That's probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did.

Tube XIII is an abortion. Definitely a modern Final Fantasy game.

It's a Final Fantasy game, but it fits better as a spin-off.

It needed more [PENELO ASS] on screen all the time to be a Final Fantasy game.

But really, it felt a lot like a MMO.... without the other people? I guess? XII was a weird beast. I was a big fan of the Zodiac Job System version. Adding some more structure and limitations to the license boards was exactly what the game needed and the other tweaks were nice, too.

I finally beat "Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions" tonight... And I really enjoyed it for what it was, but damn.. 'King' Delita's final question: "Did you get your end in all of this, 'Ramza'?" (I named my main character something else, but that doesn't really matter here.) That hit me hard... I wish that this game had gone on longer, but I really enjoyed it for what it was. I might say more later.
That's about par for the course with Matsuno's games. Very seldom do they have easy answers or tidy endings. Hell, if FFT is to be believed then FF12 is a little pointless as St. Ajora appears just under 100 years after the events of FF12 and a cataclysm wipes out most of the world including all the non-human races. Stuff like that is what makes his work so compelling I think.

I think many people wouldn't have felt this strongly if they knew this was a sequel if they were upfront from the beginning. This is 5 years of buildup with people asking for a remake longer than that.

It's just a huge disappointment and I'm still trying to figure out who this game was aimed at. They seem to think this "twist" is clever, but it's more of a bait and switch slap in the face. Just extremely weird and misguided marketing. I still have a theory that this was an actual full-on remake just two years ago and all this junk was added in last minute.

If the rumored Parasite Eve remake is a dumb episodic/live service game too I will lose my fucking shit. I've waited so long.

They're going to want it to resemble the resident evil remakes but Square can't make true action games.

I always hear the MMO comparison, but I thought it felt more like an extension of what was in place with Vagrant Story (except the targeting specific body parts)

I think it's literally just the targeting lines from the player-character to the enemy. That's why I say it is like a MMO. Those lines!!

Hey can we talk about Bravely Default in this thread? Namely how it is a piece of shit game with basic gameplay and broken fundamentals. But "OHMYGOD the title screen changed!!" so now it is a deep, transcendent experience.

You think Square will remake FF8 after this?
An FF8 with a better battle system and graphics, and an "is it a reboot?" Storyline would actually make sense given how 8 originally ended with a random out of nowhere time travel plot.

So in other words, no it will never happen.

It was on the 3DS so people remember it fondly because Nintendo Exclusive stuff.

Notice how people dropped Octopath Traveler once it got ported?

Octopath Traveler was another one... sheeesh. I did like the aesthetic, it was kind of neat. But that first demo they released on the Switch totally exposed it. I looked behind the curtain expecting to see an old man and instead there was nothing at all.

In light of the remake of FF7, a recent chapter of this romcom manga takes a jab at it with a little spoiler:

FF12 would have been great if they didn't add the kids to the story because muh teenage protags is a requirement in the marketing department's eyes.
