It's more or less an admission that the behavior is actually repellent and can't be defended on its own merits. I see a lot or stupid people make the point that there are plenty of beloved fictional characters that commit crimes.

Those characters are usually written to be sympathetic and likable, unlike Mallorie, and themselves and the crimes they commit are fictional, unlike Mallorie.

For example, Yakuza's protagonist Kiryu runs an orphanage and helps random people on the street. Mallorie shoplifts and laughs at people getting burgled.

In the case of Kiryu - he's not going around roughing up people who own loansharks for enjoyment or even excusing his part in the Yakuza. He was adopted and raised by a Yakuza, and seeing his primary role model get the sort of respect he commanded made him want to join that world too - but even Yakuza have rules. Usually along the lines of making sure whatever your doing doesn't swing a spotlight on your Family or makes them look bad...like making a comic that makes everyone point and laugh at you and people associated with you.

If Kiryu was like Jess or some of these Jokers, I doubt they would of literally punched their way to Family HQ and insisted they be allowed to leave the family and it's protection after being framed for murder they didn't commit. They all would of taken the wussy route of bowing down to Kuze and taking his deal to avoid trouble.
