That actually helps him. 95% of the country is effected by the economic effects of the virus far more than the medical effects. So he's just positioned himself as the "open it up and save your livelihood" candidate vs the democrats "shut everything down and stay inside for the next 18 months".

That could be key. For those that understand the importance of the stay at home/stay safer orders, few people at present are willing to go through the current slate of restrictions for the next 18 months. Even if areas aren't totally in the clear, some of the restrictions should be lifted or adjusted by then. Whether governors do that is the $64k question and seems at best right now.

Tax revenues for NY State are absolutely fucked, and the money needed to start coming in yesterday, otherwise he's gonna have to cut the gibs that get Dems elected in the state.

I think this is true for any state with restrictions. With all the businesses closed or open with reduced operations due to the various restrictions, states are receiving less tax revenue (namely sales, use, and withholding taxes) in their coffers right now which will eventually wreck havoc on their budgets the longer business can't reopen without restriction.

I can understand bed-wetting being a concern if younger kids drink something too close to bedtime. However, people of any age need to stay properly hydrated. To accomplish that, most need to drink something between breakfast and lunch and/or lunch and dinner -- especially in warmer climates and months. Besides, drinking water can often curtail the urge to snack on something unhealthy between meals. At least @Fareal seems to understand that.

It's Federalism working the way it should. The President of the United States isn't an emperor and is ultimately beholden to the people. And the power of the people is concentrated most heavily in the states. No matter what crisis may be occurring, it is incumbent upon the regular people of the United States to remember that they hold the power. Trump himself has said many times that he does not want to use his own power, which is a good sign but it is also a bluff due to the implication that he has any specific power over the states to begin with.

The system is working just fine and it's great to see. And it scares the shit out of countries like China who are flailing left and right to try to make the US look bad to cover their own authoritarian crackdowns.

The markets reacts to uncertainty most of all if he had laid out a plan back in February the economy would be in much better shape. It would still be bad, because the whole world is fucked right now. But we would be doing a hell of a lot better stonks wise if he didn't come out on national tv everyday and say whatever shit came to his mind.

Maybe liberals will understand why we have a 2nd amendment, I was pretty pro trump at first and then became apathetic until the pandemic and it's obvious now that, he doesn't understand the difference between running a company vs a country.

Some of us would like to have a life to go back to. If you want to hide under the mattress from Coronas that go Coof in the night, then be my guest, enjoy the world bereft of those annoying things like small stores, movie theaters, game stores, bars, clubs, restaurants, and oh, no need to worry about employment either! Big daddy government is giving you your $1200 stimulus to afford bread after your 5 hour long line at wal-mart.

Shutting down the economy of any country for 18 months is frankly utterly bizzare. It's not going to stop the coof, all the skilled trades, all the police and fire workers, healthcare workers, all the delivery drivers and all those retail workers at big box stores, all of them are still working and are exposed on a daily basis. When you do your shopping there is a decent chance you will be exposed sooner or later. You cant hide from germs without going full NASA prep, and that is unrealistic for everyone who isnt an astronaut.

Closing until the end of april has put a massive dent in expected deaths, but at some point you reach the well of diminishing returns. People will get sick and die regardless, there is a base level you cant move. 23,600 people have died of coronavirus since january, assuming you dont believe the nasty coof spreading since august was Corona V.1. In 14 months, Swine flu killed 60,000, the lions share of those deaths occurred from october 2009 to February 2010.

Corona isnt much deadlier then Swine flu was, and I dont remember the whole country closing for that. Oh yeah, thats because the vast majority of swine deaths were in the 30-50 age bracket, not the 60+ bracket. So if its us youngsters, fuck us right? Once we reach the end of april we should have PPE production to a point the hospitals will be able to handle some surge demand again, and enough people should be exposed to prevent a country wide upswing in infections. Some super hard hit areas may need to close longer, but the vast majority of shelter in place orders should be lifted by May. Closing for 18 months because of the coof is utterly ridiculous, especially given we survived 2009 just fine, and the 2006 swine flu outbreak, and america's population went up from 1918-1919-1920 despite being ravaged by the spanish flu and hundreds of thousands dying.

I'm being realistic here, there is no reason to obliterate our quality of life for over a year. This isnt EbolaAIDS, just ChinkAIDS.

A vaccine is highly unlikely. Everyone thinks a vaccine will solve all, but the flu vaccine is never 100% effective, hardly close to that number. SARS and MERS never received vaccines. Now, a Flu-shot style booster? That could very likely happen, Those 3 strains are all of the same family, and an immune booster that can trigger a generic immune response to said family of coronavirus wouldnt be impossible to make, its what we already do for various flu typed every year. But it wont be like the smallpox vaccine or MMR vaccine.

This Corona will join the other 4 major families along with multiple influenza strains that spread every year. Slow rising herd immunity as more people fight it off int he coming months and years will begin applying pressure for the disease to become more infectious and less deadly, to avoid immediately tripping the immune system of those already exposed.

In absolute terms, COVID-19 hasn't killed very many people at all. So why the panic? Why the trillions of dollars down the drain? Why the big show of welding bars over people's doors and dragging them off to quarantine?

The states need to remember their own responsibilities. They've gotten lazy and dependent on a national government that until recently was all-too-happy to sop up more power and responsibility. Trump clearly doesn't want that responsibility and why should he? It's not his and should not be his. He can mandate more tests and facilitate an environment that makes it easy for companies to push through regulation and red tape. But the blame game that each side is playing has to stop. And the states need to actually take care of business instead of playing petty and meaningless games like declaring coalitions weeks too late to be of any good. This thing that Cuomo is doing right now looks so bad. It's such a clusterfuck.

And making everything worse is the faggot media that keep instigating fights to save their failing business model. Trump is never going to be given a break so he doesn't seem to care about taking a detour in his pressers to shit on people that will never stop trying to tear him down. I can't say if that's a good or bad thing, but it's why Pence is running the China Virus response and why Trump is acting as the hype man in chief. He'll take his spotlight when he can and otherwise he'll take the blows that the other politicians and officials cannot.

It's a strange arrangement in the Executive Branch right now but it seems to be effective. Beyond that though I see a bunch of state-level politicians playing the Slaparazzi minigame from Mario Party in hopes that they'll be in the photo when all is said and done. The governors that are doing a good job are the ones that are keeping their mouths shut and staying out of it. It's no surprise which names and states are leading this futile charge.

Cuomo is in no hurry to reopen. Above all, he wants to be the one to decide when NY and especially NYC will reopen. He wants to make sure that no area will reopen near NYC before he feels NYC is ready. If commuters from Upstate come in, they can reinfect the city. He can stop this by refusing to open Upstate before NYC, which he has indicated he will. But he can't control outside of NY, and there are a lot of commuters from NJ and CT. So he has convinced the nearby governors what's good for the goose is good for the surrounding ganders.

This is only the half of it. He has felt NYC has gotten shortchanged Federally throughout this outbreak. He wanted 40,000 ventilators; Trump refused. He wanted Federal Disasterbux, Congress refused. He also sees this as a way to leverage repeal of SALT tax law changes which hurt NY and other Dem run high tax states. He also doesn't want to see other areas open before NYC and hurt it's supremacy as a primary financial center and get it left behind in a recovery.

So he bands together as many governors as he can, bypassing the Republican led National Governors Association, to create an opposition to any Trump reopening plan that doesn't put NYC first.
