Man I already saw news reporters on TV wearing their masks like absolute tards (shit was on his second chin/neck), this is fucking golden though. I trust these people with my livelihood 100%!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't care who doesn't like it. There are people in the media who deserve to be in prison for what they've done during this pandemic. Individual citizens are subject to 'common sense' restrictions on our freedom of speech, ie the 'shouting fire in a crowded theater' clause. But the media is subject to no such thing. No consequence for going in front of a country in pandemic and shouting panic and no hope. No consequence for claiming a safe, well known medication is dangerous and toxic. Why do we accept this double standard?
There is no such thing as a clause about "shouting fire in a crowded theater" in the first amendment. That came from a WW1 challenge to the draft that was overturned in the 1960s as unconstitutional.

Another cultural meme that needs to die.

Caleb Hull the congressional hall monitor needs to quit being a little bitch.

Since some idiots are treating this like “our WWII”, how long before we erect a “Tomb of the Unknown Coofer” or something like that?
Ah yes. I too remember learning in history class about WWII, the conflict in which almost everyone survived any given battle and the deaths were heavily concentrated amongst the octogenarians in the Service.

Yes, pretty much. I could see tough measures at the start, but as a better picture of the numbers and locations of cases developed expected a degree of moderation. But in general this isn't happening. And we have one "governor" who is certifiably insane. Can't buy garden seeds or seedlings in stores in her Reich. It's time to plant gardens, bitch! Can use a non-motorized boat but not a motorized boat in her Reich. Why?

The harsher the quarantine, the harder the pushback. The pushbacks will only grow. And the more civil liberties, such as freedom of speech and religion, are infringed upon or denied, not only will pushbacks grow, but the Attorney General will stay involved.

Biggest casualty of the ChiCom Flu - people's belief and trust in government and law enforcement. Some people have always had this mistrust. Now everyone else is catching on. The next time there's a national calamity wonder how many people will even pay attention to what government says, much less buy that bullshit.
There's been a big push to paint the protestors with "lol haha dumb white rednecks" or imply its just all karens wanting to get their hair done.

It strikes me as incredibly desperate, even by leftist standards.

north Europe says no to a bail out of the south....
I am not against Corona-Bonds, but it seems to me like some people want to use the pandemia to give Eurobonds a piggyback ride to smuggle them in.
Eurobonds in general are a terrible idea, the north bailing out the south isn't the only way to solve their issues, it's just the most convenient for the south, since they can waive their own fiscal responsibility and have other nations deal with it. Corona-Bonds on the other hand, would be a logical step to combat the outcome of the Chinese Flu, but before I'd accept them, I'd either prefer the EU to just give them money without any bond-shenanigans. Hell, I'd even welcome it, if the EU slashed a portion of the debt, while they're at it, but Eurobonds are a no-go.

And just like that, the boot has finally dropped. Thank you. Now we don't need to pretend we didn't want what's about to happen. Oh the Moncloa Pact's gonna be fucking fun.
Somehow, I don't really trust your assessment of the situation.

Look, I have to put up with people telling me the following on the daily:
1. Trump needs to help us! With what, exactly, they can't say
2. Cuomo needs more! More what, and from whom? Again, can't say.
3. Don't blame Cuomo, he doesn't control state state government! Uh he's the governor, he certainly does.
4. The federal government needs to help with THE VIRUS! Again, how to help is not something any lefty I know can elaborate on.

It's all I hate Trump, Drumpf failed us, Brumpf can't win, OMFG PEOPLE ARE DYING, rednecks are going to kill us! They seem completely unaware there are many states between here and LA/SF and that Michigan isn't redneck country. What works in NYC isn't going to work in Lawton, OK, where your closest neighbor is a longhorn in a barn.

When someone asked me if I even watch CNN I told them I don't have a TV. The look on their face was priceless, as if I said I didn't have running water or a toilet. I just can't talk to these people anymore, I can't.

You can't really project your voice into a giant ass hall with a mask on but cutting a hole in the mask just for show is pretty high grade stupidity. The people not even bothering to wear a mask for their speech deserve credit. They aren't even trying to ham up a performance.

Somehow, I don't really trust your assessment of the situation.

Of course you don't. You're german. But jokes aside let me state. I already mentioned rationally, from my point of view, it was too late to help the south anyway and you'd be better off getting ready for the upcoming tradewar. Because we will be on opposing fields.

But not even pretending? Yeah the Moncloa Pact was already going to break EU legislation. Only question was wether or not they were going to pretend to be nice about it. Nationalist rhetoric was already heavily on the rise. And Podemos hasn't been subtle about their hatred to the EU. I expect the pact to be fairly blatant about insulting the central powers. So I am being honest when I thank you. Result would be about the same anyway. It's nice knowing beforehand our politicians won't have to loop around qith rhetorical bullshit. Spexit is coming that much is obvious.

the amount and sort of credit the south asked for was just to much. so its just 500 billion from other EU systems.

People dont understand that the HRE is the way the EU will be build in the Future. the splintering of Spain and Italy only helps with that.

Hahahaha. Oh you think there'll be much left after the south breaks? Hmm let's see. With even less of a reason to listen to you Brexit will accelerate, which will cost you your most important banking partners. With spain and italy running only farms left for you will be poland and france, and france is already practically falling. Not to mention how much Morocco's incoming clusterfuck will assrape france. And oh is that a beautiful clusterfuck. Meanwhile the Balkans have the biggest hateboner for turkey and with the refugee crisis are already practically in open revolt. You think they'll stay put when you can't get your coin by draining the south? So then. Poland it is. Yeah I'm sure they won't use the balkans breaking as an excuse to fuck you over when they can. The east is not gonna hold for a second. Their ideology was already nationalistic to begin with and with the refugees they now see germany in as bad a light as us. So that leaves you with *drumroll* the north and center. So the socialists that already do practically nothing, the netherlands (fucking kek), belgium, luxemburg... what an empire. And france's already doing all it can to backstab germany anyway.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Germany's issue is you SUCK at making allies. And it will keep backfiring on you time and time again, because you don't understand how other countries think, and keep thinking they will just magically follow your comand just because you're germany. They won't. When an empire fragments it doesn't just loose a chunk and that's it, as soon as the first crack pops everything else follows suit. You don't scare anyone, and everyone's sick of your shit, it's that symple.

Since some idiots are treating this like “our WWII”, how long before we erect a “Tomb of the Unknown Coofer” or something like that?

If the iran and south china sea shit keeps going down like this we'll get ww3 soon enough. Fingers crossed!

We're rewarding bad behavior by bailing them out, they should be allowed to take the hit.
Moral hazard in economics terms. Considered bad because it just encourages more , increasingly worse behaviour.

It;s just occurred to me what this crisis reminds me of. Not the previous swine flu panics, or global warming.
It's Y2K .
For those who weren't around.
- There was a genuine issue. 2 digit date format code embedded in millions of locations.
- Experts knew it was a problem, but all the analyses of how serious it would be were based on (educated) guess work.
- Big media panic. All the computers were going to go crazy and kill us all. Nuclear plants would blow up. Your VCR would fail to record EastEnders.
- Different governments took it seriously in differing amounts. UK spent a lot of money, don't think the Italians really bothered.
- Lots of other projects were put on hold and diverted while this was being dealt with.

In the end it was a bit of a damp squib, and countries fared pretty much the same whether thay'd taken huge precautionary steps, or none at all. (My point here)

(Also some IT contractors made serious money. I knew of £1000/day in the UK, that's in 1999 money)

Michigan, USA

Still waiting for the official re-opening plan. The Republicans in the legislature say they have plans to reopen the state in phases and/or on a county-by-county basis. Governor Whitmer (D) expects that she will have to extend the stay-at-home order past May 1st.
I don't plan on linking any articles until something is official.

A couple dozen people protest outside Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D)'s Governor's Mansion.
(archive)
EDIT: "Outside Governor's Mansion" instead of "on front lawn."

SHUTDOWNS
Shelter-in-place order and shutdown of everything non-essential from Tuesday March 24 to Monday April 13. Friday, May 1. (archive) (executive order saved on KF) Travel between primary homes and secondary homes is banned. Gardening sections of stores are closed. (archive - extension). Marijuana shops are open. Tobacco shops are closed (archive). K-12 schools suspended for remainder of year, but alternate learning plans will be implemented (archive) (archive).
Lawsuits against the shutdown order are multiplying (archive). Major protest in Lansing April 15 (A&N thread).
The Big Three Auto manufacturers (Ford, GM, Chrysler) are closing all factories in the USA, putting well over 150,000 workers out of work. This figure does not include workers at supplier factories, which will also be obliged to close. (archive) (archive) (archive). They will be making a small number of parts for emergency vehicles, and production of ventilators, etc. has begun (archive- GM's ventilators, April 17).

ECONOMY AND MISCELLANY
Over 1 million unemployment claims filed = 10% of the total population of the state, nearly 25% of the workforce (Archive - April 16).
Big Brother is watching, and he approves. Massive phone-tracking project reveals Michigan travel down by 45%, compared to 40% nation-wide (website) (news article archive).
Car crashes are down, fatal car crashes are down, and overall death is actually down. (archive - April 12)

FREE STUFF!
Evictions suspended while the state of emergency lasts (archive)
Water will be turned back on for all households while the crisis lasts (archive)

HEALTH CARE
Hydroxychloroquine banned by governor's order (archive). Nevermind LOL! Now she's asking the federal government for it and claiming the ban was a typo in the first place. (archive). Detroit-area hospitals are testing the drug's effectiveness as a preventative on first responders and health-care workers (archive).
Up-to-date count of available hospital beds, etc. in the State (the Detroit area is "Section 2, North and South.")(government website)
Detroit field hospital admits first 8 Corona patients. It will only be taking the less-serious cases. No one on ventilators.(archive - April 14)
Another field hospital in Detroit scaled back after drop in cases. Original plan was to open with 1,100 beds. Now they are only going to open with 250, planned to open April 20. (archive - April 11)

LAW AND ORDER
All localities given more discretion to release prisoners early (archive). The State prison system is not currently releasing inmates early.
Lansing (the capitol) police are not physically responding to minor crimes such as larceny, property damage, and break-ins to unoccupied buildings, including garages. Other police are adopting similar policies (archive) (archive).
Detroit crime still down (archive - April 12); Muskegon police report crime is up (archive).
Breaking the lockdown is a misdemeanor, punishable by $1500 fines and 90 days jail time. Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has stated there will not be a "ramp up" of police enforcement (archive). The attorney general has left it to local law enforcement to close businesses, as her hands are full with price-gougers and con artists (archive).
The police cannot, at present, pull drivers over simply for being out during the shutdown (archive). Local police in the rural north and in Detroit suburbs have alike stated they will not be enforcing parts of the order (archive).

DEATH TOLL

The State added 55 previously-overlooked deaths to the total today, Thursday, April 23.

MDHHS said:
*Note on deaths (04/23/20): Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff three times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS). If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website. As a result of the most recent assessment, today’s data includes 55 additional deaths identified by this methodology.

Detroit Metro (pop. 3,860,000 total; 1,796/sq. mi.; 694/sq km):*

26,490 confirmed / 2,456 dead
25,652 confirmed / 2,321 dead yesterday
(i.e. 135 new deaths, up 43 from previous day)
Normal Detroit Metro Death Rate: 104 per day.**

Other Michigan (6,120,000; 65/sq. mi.; 25/sq km):

8,801 confirmed / 521 dead
8,314 confirmed / 492 dead yesterday
(i.e. 29 new deaths, up 8 from previous day)
Normal not-Detroit Death Rate: 167 per day**

All Michigan (9,990,000; 103/sq. mi.; 40/sq km):

35,291 confirmed / 2,977 dead
33,966 confirmed / 2,813 dead yesterday
(i.e. 164 new deaths, up 51 from previous day, down 4 without the adjustment)
Normal Michigan Death Rate: 271 per day.**

Death toll doubled since: April 12.
We have been locked down since: March 24.

Detroit Metro Daily Deaths Last Seven Days:
104 / 53 / 69 / 49 / 199*** / 92 / 135**** = 701***

State Government site, daily - today's archive;
State Gov site, total, includes breakdowns by sex, age, race and ethnicity - today's archive.
*Here defined as the City of Detroit, and Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties, minus state prisoners, who are not counted towards any county's cases, but are kept in a category of their own.
** As of 2018.
*** 95 statewide deaths were added on this day because of an adjustment in reporting standards. Presumably most were in Detroit, but I don't know exactly how many.

China needs to go back to being a closed country. Just cut it off. It's a net negative to the global community.

Also real convenient of them to change the story now.

MOUNTING EVIDENCE TRUMP HAS BEEN RIGHT ALL ALONG ON HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE!

6) add Brazilian hospital with 500 patients in Brazil cured with Hydroxychloroquine.
Key points from the article:
“Hydroxychloroquine should be administered at the very beginning of the disease, from the 2nd to the 4th day of the appearance of the first symptoms, such as fever, cough, runny nose and breathing more than 22 times per minute. People who manifest this condition should receive the medication at home. The drug is inexpensive and has few side effects.”

The coordinated effort to discredit hydroxychloriquine is stunning and perverse. And it’s a tell.

I continue to compile so WE have an easy comprehensive file to circulate to friends, family and non believers.

We’re never getting out of lockdown at this rate. The state officials in Minnesota continue to move the goalposts regarding testing and haven’t been able to answer what increased testing is even going to achieve when 70% of deaths are in nursing homes and they’ve literally just now announced a plan to focus testing on those nursing homes...weeks into this. And now the increased testing capacity won’t be publicly available for “a few weeks“ but Walz also refuses to open or plan an opening without this testing in place. It’s asinine.

Meanwhile, in my neighborhood in the city, there have been reports of a gang of people wielding bats, someone wielding a pipe, and several more robberies/break-ins than usual over the past few days. But Walz thinks we can all just stay locked down forever. Let’s just say I’m glad I never bought into the gun control bs that’s prevalent here...

McConnell says states should be able to declare bankruptcy, wants to hit 'pause' on federal aid

A little perspective on why: by statute, states are supposed to have a fund set aside for paying for 1 year of unemployment for every citizen. There's no penalty for not keeping it filled, but some states - CA and NY especially - didn't have enough set aside for a single month when this all started. We're rewarding bad behavior by bailing them out, they should be allowed to take the hit. A state-level bankruptcy rewards the states that played by the rules and hopefully leads to decreases in excessive spending on social benefits by the more liberal states.

Here's a Stanford Economist talking about the issue. Starts about 20:40.

Personally, I agree with the sentiment, up to a point. States with large liberal majorities need a dose of reality, but this penalizes the blue-collar workers who object to those policies without a way to express themselves politically. If I had my way, I would trade state bailouts for limits on media ownership and getting the equal time rule back in some fashion appropriate to today's media landscape.

Saying this because the problem seems to be the result of one side getting exclusively positive coverage. Local elections are particularly impacted by name recognition, we could do a lot about the problem by simply getting other voices out there. Like it is supposed to be in a free and open society.
