Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Schools won't reopen if the unions have anything to do with it.
And in NSW we had Brad "Health" Hazzard and that nutjob Neil Mitchell from 3AW telling Sydney they're "arrogant and selfish" for going to the beach - which was not in droves and it was limited to 6-9am.

It gives the veneer that things are getting better. Things won't be better when you have idiots banking on virus vaccines.

@LegoTugboat you downloaded your tracking app like a good Australian, yet?

Well, Sydney is arrogant and selfish. It's why everyone else hates them.

And yes, I downloaded the tracking app the minute it became available. Most exciting app release of the year.

UK Anecdotal report:

I had a talk yesterday with a neighnour who is a surgeon in a local hospital. Got lots of anecdotal reports of how he sees things, but have 't backed any of this up . It's all citation needed.

- The UK regions are affected very differently. It hasn't really hit us much here, but West Midlands and London have been hit. He blamed population denstity - living in tower blocks and using the tube. And ethnic behaviour differences.

- His A&E department is at 20% of normal volumes. Yes they are down 80% on normal patient numbers coming through the door. Mainly because people aren't coming in for trivial shit, with some reduction due to people doing less driving etc.

- He is seeing more than usual number of old people injuring themselves. Climbing up ladders , trying to do things for themselves etc. Also more DIY injuries.

- Elective surgeries are cancelled, but also diagnostic procedures. He was quite angry/worried about this, it will lead to more deaths down the line. Your prostate cancer surgery - postponed. Endoscopy - postponed.

- Some of their theatres were converted to emergency ICU capacity. It hasn't been needed.

- The UK gov bought all capacity from the private hospitals for three months up front. It hasn't been needed yet, and so those beds are sitting empty, not being used.

- The local Nightingale hospital has not been needed.

- They are struggling a bit for PPE and using stuff they wouldn't normally, e.g. industrial facemasks, but not at failure point. What has degraded is the supplies of other general drugs and equipment, not Covid specific items. E.g. the stuff they use for everyday procedures. The lines that they use for IVs. Supply chain issues.

- His hospital is putting Covid patients on ventilators much more aggressively than usual, and as a result is seeing much better overall rates of recovery. This seems important. The different UK hospitals are trying different approaches, and are chatting to each other.

Overall opinion - It's a bit of a nothing burger, and we are doing more damage with the panicky mitigation strategies. Thinks they need to start lifting restrictions and putting things back towards normal operating ASAP.

It'd be ironic if the only vaccine that works has some horrible side-effect like dementia.

And whats the stuff about some sort of neurobehavioral change in kids who have had this? Is that actually a thing.
There's a reason it takes so long to develop a vaccine when a vaccine is basically just a virus that's been beaten to shit so that you can develop antibodies but it can't infect you. It's so that you can make sure it's safe.

There are neurological effects, but they've shown to be short-term and limited to more primitive areas of the brain.

Very slow news day. Hospital is seriously just back to normal. Everything is seriously just back to normal except with a lot more masks, chunks of our economy cut off and a lot more staying home because it's still not legal to come out. Politics seem to be relaxing again, mostly because they're busy trying to reactivate the country. I do have to apreciate that narrative aside the PP has joined the rest and is being actively helpful now. They're assholes but at least they don't get in the way. Before we had some cases of their narrative trying to spin "opening is lethal" shit on mom groups and shit but it seems when it comes to the economy their capitalism overtakes their opposition narrative and they do want to get this shit going fast. Props. They're slightly less awful than I thought. Vox is still being actively awful but at this point literally no one listens to them. It's like if alex jones was given a seat in congress. Sure you know he'll be an ass but who cares. As opposed to the american democrats, who are being asses and everyone cares, because they actually hurt.

Overall. Memes are nice. I have a lot to study. Hospital is ok. Morale is high enough. And deescalation is going way more smoothly than we thought. It will be fun. Also birds are still on heat over here. Which is nice. Some, specially from madrid, are worrying about how traffic will be handled once we reopen, and calling for more use of trains and public transport, because of the whole air contamination situation. And honestly madrid's atmosphere was absolutely dreadfull so I support them, but I don't know where they expect us to get the money for that. I do genuinely hope we see some small biz take care of that, they tend to be quick to pop up when stuff like this enters public consciousness. People also calling for stickers for national product and ensuring it isn't mixed with foreign product. Partially because of the nationalist bent occuring, partially because of the economy and partially because having tasted local product since the frontier closed they noticed what those of us who lived near producers noticed, that being that I have no fucking clue what south africans and moroccans do to their food. But holy fuck is national product so much better. Specially honey, citrus and oliveol. Just. Fuck me sideways that's a change. Best guess for the oil and honey is they gotta be mixing it with some kinda garbage. Either way fuck that. Makes me think of the god damned poisoned austrian wine fiasco DTRH talked about. (Or cristal head vodka commercials), only I'm guessing it can't be toxic if the alarms aren't blaring. But either way it doesn't taste nearly as nice.

Incredible. Guess I may get some free eats starting in about six weeks. Maybe. 🤣

They probably won't hand out any meal tickets for In-And-Out Burger, or Round Table Pizza. Likely for some shit I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole.

...

Why seniors though. If it is poverty, they should just do it for poor people. And if it is to keep them home. Then they should make a program to carry it home instead of that shit. What even is the rationale here?

Same, honestly. Hospital's fucking deserted since nobody is getting drunk and shooting each other or getting drunk and falling off a boat.

Emergency room has been dead.

Once Corona-chan eliminates the primitive areas of our brains we will take our rightful place out among the stars as the rulers of the galaxy.

“We really want to focus our values throughout the state of California to get a lot of independent restaurants up and running again as well, have a diversity of options and make sure that what we are sending to our seniors is low sodium and not high-fructose drinks and sugary drinks and the like,” Newsom said.

Wouldn't be California if they didn't worry about sugary drinks, low sodium, and independent restaurants.

Also, it's funny how if you just gave people the cash they could feed themselves for way less than $66 a day as @Honka Honka Burning Love pointed out.

66 a day is honestly fucking ridiculous.

Personally I do certainly care about small businesses, and think many should care a lot more about their diet, specially in america. But this still seems fucking retarded to me. I mean. Again why seniors specifically, their income should be the least affected by corona, since they're already retired. And this seems like they tried to solve 5 different problems in an inneficient way and wound up not adressing any and wasting a lot of money in the process.

So does this virus have long-term effects? And is it confirmed that you can't get it again/spiking up again after recovering? I'm not seeing the "guy gets Coronavirus 'again' because his test was negative in the first place" stuff lately.

There are academic studies carried out that say, "We tested for antibodies, the results aren't etched in stone because the sample wasn't completely random, but they show that the infection rate is several times higher than the official numbers meaning the hospitalization and fatality rates are several times lower than previously reported numbers." People counter this with articles from the Washington Post that say, "Sources say one doctor says he saw 2 Covid-19 patients drop dead of rectal bleeding, both on days that start with the letter 't'," and then they go, "See I told you! We're fucked!"

People just get off on the fantasy that we're fucked, IMO. The media is constantly reporting the world is going to end. Remember when the UK was going was going to sink into the Atlantic after Brexit, then they actually left this winter, nothing happened and everyone forgot about Brexit?

Remember acid rain?
Y2K?
2012?
Trump just started World War III in Iran?

None of these things fucking happened. The media had experts saying they were going to every time.

If you look hard enough you can find an expert to say anything.

I rated you horrifying not because of your story but because you were on reddit. Of course the pretentious dickbag hivemind would be up in arms about everything.

The WHO just published another one of their bullshit "There is currently no evidence that people who have recovered from COVID-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection." studies.

The idiots at the WHO is already backtracking from this -

Everyone is New York city is going crazy -

Meanwhile, in sunny California

People claiming these lockdowns are going to last until 2022 are nuts. I was a park on Saturday near Philadelphia, and it was merely in the 50s and sunny, and it was packed. There will be full scale riots in the cities if you tell people they have to sit in their apartments all summer.

I would spend that just on wine if you would get your fuckn country fixed... i realy wanna go to Ibiza this summer..

Well I dunno about catalonia 'cause they just spiked back. But the rest of the mediterranean coast (valencia, andalucia and murcia) is trying to reopen ASAP. And from what I heard the island are seething at the lockdown so I'm guessing Ibiza won't even reach june before saying "fuck it" and reopening everything.

Someone recently thought I was insane for suggesting that even extending the lockdowns into June will result in riots. Some people thinking that most will simply put up with being trapped in their apartments the entire summer is the true insanity.

The “for thee, but not for me” attitude seems to be spreading too. An immunocompromised friend was very adamant that everyone else going outside and enjoying the weather is selfish, but having another friend over to their house repeatedly and technically breaking the stay at home order that way is fine because it’s keeping them sane. This friend also informed me that it’s not faaaaaaair if we tell old and immunocompromised people to stay at home while the rest of us get on with it. No response to how that’s fair to everyone else who’s not at risk for complications.

Yep, from June on, it's time for the immunocompromised, elderly, and any other high-risks groups, and I suppose people who work or care for them, to stay home and/or take extra precautions. There's no way in hell that most Americans (and I imagine most Canadians) are going to skip summer over this. I'm OK with continued distancing, masks/face coverings, and no huge concerts or other big events, but everything else needs to move forward.

It must be interesting being friends with an Olimpic Medalist. At the Darwin Awards.

Jokes aside. Honestly I'm so glad people are taking it with humor over here. Yesterday Vox asked for a cacelorada against the government and through my window I could only hear 2 people. So that lifted my spirits a lot. I can't imagine how much morale would plummet if those kinda people started to be more noticeable. I do hope deescalation keeps accelerating 'cause 2 may sounds like it's ages from now!

You can send those In-And-Out Burger coupons this way, my man.
