It's somewhat of a trope in old films based on the fact that homosexual relationships are ultimately nonprocreative and generally involve risky behaviors and self-harm, which makes them thematically tragic.

Tolkien already had problematic depictions of POC with the Haradrim and other Easterners. His work was very *gasp* ethnoscentric, much like real mythologies.

Even Tolkien had a problem with them because he later realized they implied groups could be inherently evil, which he disagreed with. 2. Reading Tolkien's work as "ethnocentric" is like reading his work as a critique of Capitalism. LOTR was Tolkien writing fanfic of Norse and Celtic mythology with a Catholic-friendly slant.

There's a legitimate point about sexual and ethnic minorities being killed off at a disproportionate rate, particularly if white and hetero characters are untouched...but this is just whinging because an LGBT character is being caught up in the same situation as other characters suffering the same kind of trauma.

I remember the Division catching some flak because one of the side stories involves a lesbian coming out to her mother, while she's ill with a terminal illness. If that was literally the only gay representation in the game it would stand out, but the complaints were nonsense because in the setting literal millions of people are dying, and there's gay characters who weren't killed off.
