War Hundreds of protesters, some carrying guns in the state Capitol, demonstrate against Michigan's emergency measures

Hundreds of Michigan residents protested outside the state Capitol building in Lansing on Thursday, with some pushing inside while the Legislature was debating an extension of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s state of emergency in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Protesters held signs, waved American flags and even carried firearms while some chanted, “Let us in!” and “This is the people’s house, you cannot lock us out,” and others tried to get onto the House floor but were blocked by state police and sergeants-at-arms, according to WDIV-TV, an NBC affiliate in Detroit.

A state police spokesman told NBC News that it is legal in Michigan to carry firearms as long as it is done with lawful intent and the weapon is visible.

The protest, dubbed the "American Patriot Rally," was organized by Michigan United for Liberty to call for the reopening of businesses.

State lawmakers are expected to vote on the 28-day extension of the state of emergency before it expires at midnight.

Whitmer, a Democrat who has faced fierce backlash for her strict stay-at-home mandate, extended that order earlier this month until May 15, but eased some restrictions on public activities as the state's coronavirus cases stabilize. The state, however, still has more than 40,000 cases and is one of the hardest-hit states.

The emergency declaration allows Whitmer to use her emergency powers to use executive orders during a crisis; its extension is separate from the extension of the stay-at-home order.

As the protests moved indoors from the rainy steps of the Capitol, police took the temperatures of those entering the building using a forehead thermometer, according to WOOD-TV, an NBC affiliate in Grand Rapids.

Like the “Operation Gridlock” demonstration on April 15 over Whitmer’s stay-at-home order, many demonstrators appeared to be supporters of President Donald Trump, donning "Make American Great Again" campaign hats, and in one instance, putting on a dance routine by two girls wearing masks that appeared to be Trump and former President Barack Obama.

Republican lawmakers in Michigan, who control both chambers, have signaled that they would like to see the state safely reopen soon and have pushed back against Whitmer’s request for an extension of her emergency declaration.

An idea like this was going around on Twitter back in February. I could see someone actually doing it.

So how much is Whitless paying people to catch the Kung Flu and spread it to the protests? I can see her being smart/evil enough to come up with something like that, but the average low information spudbrain? Nah.

I don't think anyone would object to walling-off large metropolitan areas of the US and starving them out.
But how would that help cure the wuhan flu?
The what-han who?

Please do try to keep in character, cringey siegelarper. I do admire your tenacious dumbing of every reasonable post though. The redness of your posterior is remarkable.

Thankfully this mad man was stopped before it got out of hand!

Lol would you look at that....Yankees wanting to be us.

And that power hungry bitch has been working all day to consolidate power.

Part of leadership is connecting with your people. Trump has gotten away with a lot of stuff that would sink other political persons because he has managed to connect on a personal level with Americans. In return, Americans abided by quarantine and other measures to try and contain chink flu.

Michigan would not be in this state if the governor was connecting with the citizens in a similar way. People are willing to put up with a lot for the sake of a leader if they respect that leader. I think that we can trace NYC's problems to this too, no one respects what's his name. (the fact that he didn't shut down the subways when trying to "quarantine" also helped.)

This is the problem with Democrats, they don't understand that they are in power simply because the people have not decided to dislodge them. Even dictators must make concessions to their populations to avoid being disemboweled and hanged. This lack of order comes from a lack of leadership.

I would really like to know...what is her endgame at this point? To piss off her constituents enough to start an actual rebellion? May 28 is a long time out from here.

So basically what you're saying is the DNC is full of wannabe dictators who don't actually understand how dictatorships work. Sounds about right.

I'm going to hope the state legislature has her removed. Hope.
The state needs to do it legally. But against normal procedure. If the judges are aiding her, remove her and them through legal legislative means.

This what impeachment should truly look like.

Did they let you out of prison, @snailslime ?

And once she reads this thread, she'll issue an emergency order prohibiting impeachment/removal of herself and/or her allies. At this rate I wouldn't put it past her.

Doing things "legally" isn't as easy as one thinks, especially in the light of "temporary" emergency powers. Because you can just make it illegal to challenge you. Or retaliate against those attempting to do so. Like a workplace supervisor doing improper things and firing people who notice.

Extremely optimistic TBH

It went kind of like this, except with fewer brain cells on both sides of the aisle.

Michigan, USA

Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has defied the legislature's attempts to terminate our state of emergency, and declared a new state of emergency.

Mlive said:
The first of the three orders terminates the existing state of emergency and disaster declarations, and the second asserts that Michigan remains under a state of emergency under the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945.
The final order declares a new state of emergency and disaster under the Emergency Management Act of 1976. The new orders would run through 11:59 p.m. May 28.

This is almost certainly going to court.

They can challenge her governing competence if she's directly going against federal laws and constitutional rights.

She better pull back. She's violating Federal jurisdiction. And Trump can send the military in and declare martial law to restore constitutional rights. We fought a war over this.
And he'll be a hero for it too.

Geez, he may have to send the military in to protect her from being lynched.

Everyone's turning against her.

@Duke Nukem Between the earlier image and the extension, I am getting some seriously creepy "I will make it legal" vibes from Whitmer.

And even worse, people will congratulate her for doing so.

So you're saying she's a Trump sleeper agent whose goal is to start a civil war so that Lieutenant Bonespurs can finally be the military hero that lefties mock him for not being?

When you believe you are on the Right Side of History, even as people with guns gather outside your office and the legislature says "what are you doing?"....

"Out of Touch" seems to not quite cover this level of hubris.

Sweetheart, you think you have me fooled pretending to be against a liberal locking down power, but this is wire that no democrat can walk. You play this game. And you can take the L when it comes too.

Federal>state and unfortunately for you, Trump = Government.

A good comparison to Michigan is the UK, which technically went on a similar level. But that's more down to British Police seeing that they got a bunch of extra power to run around asking people if they have their "walking in a park" loisense. Heck even down to the fact London is the worst hit area.

In the UK you can't even order take out in a lot of cases, they leaned hard on making sure the big business fast food places shut up for a good month or so. But the running government made it very clear from the get-go that this was intended to be a community effort, and Brit's generally see something as a national duty worth doing if the cause is noble enough. The way the police have acted and even the gov itself has made that resolve wobble a bit mind. But the fact they at least try to act like they were steps they didn't want to take, and respect that it's a lot to ask of people helps.

But that's the major difference here. UK sold it as something that's tough, but important to protect people you love and keep the health service stable. You are contributing to society and helping the community by sitting your butt home, getting your kids to draw rainbows, knitting face masks and coming out 7pm every other day to clap for essential workers.

Heck even watch Trump statements for lockdown measures and the flight bans, he delivers all of that in calm tones and with a certain note of regret in having to take those steps. Recognising the act of what they are doing will impact literal millions, even if it's for a good reason.

What I gather is MI's Govenor did no such "look this is a measure I'ld rather not take, but it's important right now" statement with the people of Michigan. She got to locking down soon as she got the power, and doesn't really seem to give statements to justify her actions or show recognition that the people are the ones letting her have that position to begin with.

And they're even throwing the racist white privilege nonsense at the protesters, and it ain't fucking working.

Congratulations lefties, if anything is gonna turn me into a Trumptard, it's people like you.

I'm not particularly optimistic about the Michigan governor backing down without serious consequences, which seem to be averted by the emergency powers shit.

It's only going to get worse. And I am thankful that I do not live in Michigan.
