War Hundreds of protesters, some carrying guns in the state Capitol, demonstrate against Michigan's emergency measures

Hundreds of Michigan residents protested outside the state Capitol building in Lansing on Thursday, with some pushing inside while the Legislature was debating an extension of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s state of emergency in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Protesters held signs, waved American flags and even carried firearms while some chanted, “Let us in!” and “This is the people’s house, you cannot lock us out,” and others tried to get onto the House floor but were blocked by state police and sergeants-at-arms, according to WDIV-TV, an NBC affiliate in Detroit.

A state police spokesman told NBC News that it is legal in Michigan to carry firearms as long as it is done with lawful intent and the weapon is visible.

The protest, dubbed the "American Patriot Rally," was organized by Michigan United for Liberty to call for the reopening of businesses.

State lawmakers are expected to vote on the 28-day extension of the state of emergency before it expires at midnight.

Whitmer, a Democrat who has faced fierce backlash for her strict stay-at-home mandate, extended that order earlier this month until May 15, but eased some restrictions on public activities as the state's coronavirus cases stabilize. The state, however, still has more than 40,000 cases and is one of the hardest-hit states.

The emergency declaration allows Whitmer to use her emergency powers to use executive orders during a crisis; its extension is separate from the extension of the stay-at-home order.

As the protests moved indoors from the rainy steps of the Capitol, police took the temperatures of those entering the building using a forehead thermometer, according to WOOD-TV, an NBC affiliate in Grand Rapids.

Like the “Operation Gridlock” demonstration on April 15 over Whitmer’s stay-at-home order, many demonstrators appeared to be supporters of President Donald Trump, donning "Make American Great Again" campaign hats, and in one instance, putting on a dance routine by two girls wearing masks that appeared to be Trump and former President Barack Obama.

Republican lawmakers in Michigan, who control both chambers, have signaled that they would like to see the state safely reopen soon and have pushed back against Whitmer’s request for an extension of her emergency declaration.

I am pretty sure bringing weapons into a state capitol is at the very least a misdemeanor. The ones carrying weapons should be arrested.

Lol at people who voted you "dumb" or "disagree".

How are you going to arrest hundreds of people at once, let alone armed ones? You got enough zip ties?

Whitless is a garbage wannabe dictator who is simply using the illness as an excuse to do whatever she wants. Fuck the law and fuck her, and fuck anyone who defends her, especially now.

And yet, the cops didn't arrest them, nor call in massive reinforcement from the city, state or Nation Guard to arrest them.... when they were standing right there....why was that?

Could it be the cops don't want to stuff 1,000 potential coofers into their jails? or their patrol cars, with them? Or do they not want to encourage more to show up next time? Or do they maybe sympathize with them?

Honest question, why did that should not become a did?

Why didn't they circle the scene, create and armed perimeter and then only let those unarmed and not photograhed having held weapons go leaving behind only those who, obviously broke the law, and arrest them?

Why didn't it happen?

Because the anti-anti-lockdown people keep saying "The people will fall in line because they're pussies, and those that don't will get arrested" seem to keep saying that, even when there's photographic evidence of them being slightly-tardish in front of armed uniformed cops...

And nothing happened.... and unless you know something I don't know, that should tell you who is gonna win....

How is this major shocking news?

During the Spanish Flu, there were larpers who protested the mask wearing and social distancing orders. This is just history repeating itself.

That's not the problem though, the issue is the abuses of power in Michigan. Explain to me how prohibiting gardening supplies and boating is going to stop the spread of a virus. Hell, explain how it's fair to close those down but allow liquor, abortion, and lottery tickets.

Point taken, I come from a state where things are saner than that. I should read more before I post.

It's not the fact that the lockdowns are in place. The protesters don't "not believe in science" nor do they necessarily want the disease. It's the fact that it's an overreaction by somebody acting like a dictator, and worse, she's moving to remove checks on her authority.

Why is everybody too stupid to understand this concept?

Liberal narrative contradictive to reality and law.

And complete ignorance on why this country was started in the first place.

Just did some more reading about this governer. This protest situation is definitely a far cry from the anti-social distancing protests in my state, and I should have kept my mouth shut since I did not know all the facts in this particular case.

Usually, I vote blue, but in this case, fuck Whitmer. The more I know, or something like that.

Bullshit. The whole "flatten the curve" thing has some pretty strong science behind it. If you want people to die or think hospitals won't get overwhelmed, you're arguing with scientific consensus, and thus, you're anti-science. It's no different than arguing the earth is flat or vaccines cause kiwifarmers

The whole point of it is to limit public gatherings. Stores (gardening supply stores, in your example) are going to be huge hotspots for spreading the disease. Boat landings are huge congregations of people in the summer. Abortion is a medical service that has to be done by a certain point in the pregnancy. Lottery tickets and liquor I 100% agree with you.

Is it against city law to have a weapon in said city?

I didn't read the article, but a lot of places do not allow guns even if the city allows them out in public. Hospitals, schools, municipal buildings, etc...

"B-b-but if they were black they would've all been gunned down!"
Multiple people have said this, and it's provably bullshit.

That shit already happened in the capitol building in California way back in 1967.

Which led to Ronald Reagan banning the carrying of firearms in public. It's almost as if people are willing to accept gun control as long as it's applied to "the right people." Nothing new. Garbage governors are nothing new sadly.

People are only complaining about it now because the people who are doing it aren't black. Also, it's almost as if state laws are somehow different in different states. There's nothing that says Michigan has to follow California law, for one.

OK dictator, enjoy being cooped up in your fart box for the rest of your life. You sound like the kind of person who would advocate for preventing rape by castrating every adult male in America. Sure it would work, but at what cost?

That being said, a few less baby boomers isn't a bad thing, they're the generation responsible for destroying the world and turning it into the shithole it is today.
