Rather than using drama as a tool to drum up interest as @TrunksFromDragonballGT has suggested, it's rather clear that Ethan just has no impulse control to refrain from engaging no matter how obviously exceptional the engagement is and uses that excuse to justify it to himself and his ball washers. If he was truly using drama as a tool, he'd avoid also using drama to shit where he eats.

A person who puts "pleasing customers" and "selling hot dogs" above all else would not be treating former customers like this; they'd simply say something like "Vikki wasn't satisfied with her purchase and I think that I've done all I can to make it right. <insert actions Ethan has taken re: bad product here>.
