Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I really can't stand NextDoor, wherein there are nanny-staters who state "rules are rules," and can't abide the fact that two mutually-consenting parties might agree to a business transaction in the form of a haircut, taking place in someone's home. These people label anyone consenting to such a transaction as "far-right." Apparently, people don't understand how a haircut can help job interviews, and how some people can't give themselves haircuts without butchering their hair. Coincidentally, I found one of these specimens begging for a building contractor during the "stay-at-home" order.

I enjoy the hypocrisy immensely.

I'm salivating at the thought of the first publicized story of a Corona snitch getting the shit beaten out of them, and no legal repercussions happening.

Hey, the government did suggest to wear a mask after all....

I hate to be saying that but here we are.

Run, run as fast as you can
You can't catch me, I snitched to feds, man.

Rules are rules, except with Immigration. Note how the invoke the Rule of Law after having trashed it for years by declaring Sanctuary States and cities. I don’t think you can put the toothpaste back in the tube now.

Welp. We finally got an anti-lockdown protest in madrid. T'was a matter of time at this point really. It was organized by PP and Vox just to fuck with Sanchez, and the right's trying to milk it for propaganda. It really ain't working though. In great part because with Ayuso's corruption recently showcased it was made evident this is just to try and cover their own scandals. In part because for an officially called for protest in madrid it was fucking MINISCULE. Student unions have gotten larger protests here in cadiz last time the PP tried cutting our school system. I remember because I was there. Here. Compare:
This was today:
20200515_191218.jpg

This was on 2019 called by the right wing for literally no fucking reason whatsoever only that they wanted to be a pain in the ass. (No really. The only purpose of the protest was to "show discontent at the general state of the nation". It literally had no goal):
20200515_191243.jpg

For context this was the 8M feminist protest with equaly no goal the left pulled. Added so that you can see what madrid considers a real fucking attendance for even useless shitty ass yearly protests made for no fucking reason:
Aspecto-manifestacion-feminista-Alcala-Madrid_EDIIMA20180308_1012_23.jpg

This was students in cadiz:
manifestacion-estudiantes-sevilla--644x362.jpg

Everyone's just comparing with their favourites but needless to say this protest was PATHETIC. It's borught little more than some memes for the left and some very, very poor attempts by the right at calling the left hypocritical for making fun of protestors. Personally I would agree many lefties are being hypocritical. Not me though. I also bitched about the feminist protest, I hate everyone equaly. But point is. It is quite hilarious how few people went. I added cadiz because I remember it. But either way you can see. This is not what spain considers a succesful protest at all. Hell this is a failure even by our right wing's standard and those were substantially lower than the left's to begin with. So people are memeing it. A lot. And the right wing REALLY doesn't like that they're memeing it. As always.

Personally. I talked this morning about the lockdown side effects. I do agree with the protestors in saying it's time for all of the chunks of spain still not on phase 1 to go to phase 1. We need to keep accelerating this shit. I do NOT agree with the protestors on a lot of what they said... because wooooweee that was some crazy slogans at times. But I get why they're pissed off and think more people should be.

It's funny in a way. In concept I agree with the right on this one. I see why Sanchez wants to keep madrid closed. Namely thay it is a plaguehole, the only reason why spain has such outrageous numbers, and Ayuso has only kept making everything objectively worse, so I get why he fears their spike will be horrendous, specially after ayuso just dismantled IFEMA like a fucking looney instead of letting it wait till the spike. But I don't agree that they should stay close anymore. And I don't even think the gov can afford it since the lockdown's droping next vote anyway. We need to move on.

But despite agreeing with the right and understanding why they are this pissy (the storm has gone and tonight Imma take the longest of walks) I can positively say the way they went about their message. Letting radicals take control of the message, bullshiting about communism, giving no room for negotiation, adding fuel to conspiracy theories and generally trying to maximize their level of obnoxiousness online and IRL with noise and bots. Well. That's just making people who try to spread the message the right way look crazy!

No seriously. I know in the US the media tried to make the protestors look like insane trump supporters. In spain they did too. But here they didn't hsve to try nearly as hard. The guys with the megaphones basically spent the entire time screaming utter insanity during the protest. And in social media all they did was scream about "progres" discriminating against them (by... responding to their posts making fun of them... because that's discrimination now. Why. Is. The. Spanish. Right. Wing. Copying. Feminist. Rhetoric. For fucks sake!) Calling them hypocritical for telling them their protest was a failure (which it objectively was. That was like 4 cats poorly counted. That's not nearly enough people!) And ranting about global conspiracies.

I now finally empathized with the people claiming Vox was a gay op fully. I have to ask if they were plants specifically to make people sick of the lockdown look insane. It was utter clownworld. All they needed to do was put forth a sane argument. Instead. They made poe's law the order of the day on everyone's mind.

Level with me, people. How bad is this second wave going to be. Are we going to be put in another lockdown in a couple of months?

the actual disease will be pretty much like last time. Countries that haven’t had many cases and locked down like nz will probably get whacked.
the civil effects will be the thing to watch for. Of the response to a few cases is to lockdown immediately we are fucked. Because it’ll mean the precedent is set.

Now, I been trying to find decent data, but what it looks like is that the IFR is 0.1% to 0.4% , and it is pretty much exclusively killing the old and sick.
I think 0.1 is a bit low. Maybe in some areas that have a Specific strain. My guess is 0.4

Have any of you been tested yet? That shit hurts like a bitch. Felt like I had an ice cream headache for like 15 minutes.

Not me, and don't plan to, voluntarily.

Looks like the ventilators sent from Russia have been shown to be a safety hazard by the Russians themselves.

In other news, some restuarants are adding surchhages of approximatelt 5% to their bills as a "COVID-19" surchage to address increasing food/supply costs. Some people are ok with it if they know in advance. In other places where it was an unexpected line item, the fee has been quite unpopular even when patrons are sympathetic. Although resturant owners in questions claim this is temporary and the surcharges will disappear when prices "return to normal," such a comment is so open-ended that it would be easy to keep the surcharge indefinitely under the guise of things never returning to normal -- akin to gas stations that started charging 10 cents a gallon extra for credit cards to recover the added processing costs when gas hit $4/gallon only to keep the extra 10 cents per gallon in place even when prices dropped back below $2.50 and haven't reached the $4 mark ever since.

No thanks. That's a hard pass for me. I've taken advantage of the quarantine to get good at cooking stuff so I won't be eating out anytime soon if at all.

Hollywood is starting to film again. It's secret (the permit office is still closed) but I'm hearing more and more indie productions looking to rent gear and giving each other advice on where and what they can get away with, while the big players are circulating hypothetical new safety guidelines, beginning negotiations with the unions, and re-writing stories to accomedate limited locations and social distancing. It sounds like a logistical nightmare to me, but... apparently the show must go on!

There is no upside to getting tested and branded “unclean” forever. If you got it, ride it out or worst case try that HCQ that Drump’s been shilling for. By all means stay away from hospitals if you do get it.

What in the fuck? How would you even functionally do construction? Are you not allow to use a 75 pound electric buster in the US?
You can, just need to get help.

As soon as I saw how that's done I knew there's no way I would ever consent to something like that and would just have to wait until fast blood tests are available, assuming I ever need to get tested at all.

I can guarantee there's a large percentage of the population who've had the ability to get tested and haven't for the same reason.

Holland and Barrett are still out of my favoured Vitabiotics brand, but have plenty of other options available. Might be worth getting many months ahead in your stocks in case supplies dwindle in autumn or when this message gets wider public penetration. It costs pennies, and Kiwi lives are more important than others.

I like the spray ones. The idea is that you spray them on the inside of your cheek and they go straight into the bloodstream. Vitamin D is fat-soluble which means it might not be absorbed if you're on a low-fat diet.

Though actually this study says the pills or the spray are both equally effective. Oh well.

https://archive.vn/wip/DMD8H

Researchers from the University of Sheffield partnered with industry to test the efficacy of vitamin D oral sprays.

The head-to-head clinical trial compared the rate of change of vitamin D status in response to a vitamin D3 (3000IU per day) dose, in both capsule and oral spray (sublingual) methods of delivery. Healthy volunteers took vitamin D over the course of six weeks in 2017 during the height of winter -- a time when many people's stores from the summer months are depleted.

Now published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition the study -- which formed part of a three-year research project -- concluded that the oral spray method of vitamin D was equally effective as taking a capsule and supported the same rate of improvement in vitamin D levels amongst the trial volunteers.

No, just go outside for an hour a day and you will have enough Vitamin D...

I do that as well. There's a fair bit of evidence that many people are vitamin D deficient. And spray or capsule you're talking about pennies a day.

I don’t believe you can ingest enough Vitamin D to even come close to your body’s generation of it by sunlight exposure. Get out! Be brave!
I've spent the last 7.5 weeks basically topless in the garden or exercising. This has been the best prolonged spell of perfect weather I can remember in the UK. Since March 24th we've had about 4 or 5 rainy days. I've got a nice lockdown tan, and since I've given up all semblance of personal grooming I could convincingly pass for a gypsy or tramp. My major risk isn't Corona, it's carcinoma .

But during Flu season when I'm hopefully back at work stuck in an office, the sun's only above the horizon for about 8 hours and it's constanly overcast and rainy, then supplementation is advised.

Here's an idea for a middleground: Make fucking IDs mandatory already. Et fucking voila. Now all you need to do is link unemployment/UBI with citizenship and you don't have to worry so much about the fucking illegals comiting even more fiscal fraud. And as a side effect if you also use it for anti-voting-fraud you also stop having to worry about that shit too! Not that fucking hard to do. It's literally what everyone else is doing! I would have trouble believing a country can just trip itself over its own legislation repeatedly by adding so much convoluted shit to simple paperwork, except that this is america we're talking about. And if there's one thing you mofos are good at it's complicating basic shit, see the imperial system for reference. No I'm not gonna stop poking at that mess and yes I'm definitelly butthurt about it. I just... It astounds me how much your bureaucracy manages to stab itself. I mean, over here the UBI stuff was considered, and apparently approved so it is coming, and I still have no fucking clue how the fuck do they think this won't tank the economy, though I guess since we're spain, well you know, you can't kill what's already dead, so we might as well try. But the one thing I did not expect having to worry about is "but how do we keep illegals from accessing it without keeping lower classes out too?"... Citizen. Fucking. Registry. Every country has it. Use it. That's literally what it was made for!
The Dems have made voting IDs a form of racism. We're legally not allowed to have that in some places.

Michigan, USA

Court of Claims Judge Cynthia Stephens has heard oral arguments in our Republican-controlled legislature's lawsuit against Governor Whitmer's alleged overreach of her emergency powers. She is working on her decision, but predicts that it will be appealed either way. If she is right, the next court will be the Court of Appeals, and then the Supreme Court, unless the Supreme Court intervenes to hear the case immediately.
Judge Stephens was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm (D), and has ruled in the Governor's favor twice and against her once in cases in the past few years.

Budgetary woes. A $3.2 billion shortfall is expected, including a $2 billion drop in the General Fund and $900 million in the School Aid Fund. The state has "about $700 million in unspent money that was supposed to carry forward into 2021, leaving a $2.5 billion hole to fill in less than five months."

SHUTDOWN SHOWDOWN
Shelter-in-place order from Tuesday March 24 to Monday April 13. Friday, May 1, Friday, May 15, May 28 May 1, maybe? (archive) (executive order saved on KF) . The Republican-controlled legislature has refused to extend Governor Whitmer's emergency authority. Governor Whitmer insists her emergency orders are all still in effect (Rundown on the laws).
State attorney general Dana Nessel (D) is also leaving enforcement of the stay-at-home order to local discretion until the courts weigh in on it (archive). She has stated Governor Whitmer's orders are valid and are to be enforced (archive). The legislature is not calling for civil disobedience at this time (archive).
The legislature has filed a lawsuit against the governor (archive). Oral arguments were heard May 15 (archive). The judge's decision is pending, but will most likely be appealed either way.
State senate leader Mike Shirkey (R) is also supporting a petition drive to change the law. Such a petition would require 340,047 signatures to be collected. It would be veto-proof if approved by the legislature, and would go on the next general election ballot if denied by them (archive 1, archive 2, archive 3).
U. S. Rep Paul Mitchell (R - The Thumb) has filed a lawsuit independently against Governor Whitmer, in federal district court. Link, pdf on KF. He has also founded a committee to work on the petition recommended by Sen. Shirkey.
There have been at least nine other lawsuits against Governor Whitmer's actions during this crisis, mostly regarding the shut-down order, in various stages of progress and in various courts (summary of eight of them). However, "all deadlines applicable to the commencement of all civil and probate actions and proceedings" are suspended until the end of the states of emergency and disaster. Executive order, and thus in limbo. (archive).

Hydroxychloroquine banned by governor's order (archive). Nevermind LOL! Now she's asking the federal government for it and claiming the ban was a mistake in the first place. (archive). Detroit-area hospitals are testing the drug's effectiveness as a preventative on first responders and health-care workers (archive). Article on results, May 8 (archive).
Elective surgeries are banned. Maybe? Who knows. If/when in effect, abortions were not included in the ban (thread).
At any rate, hospitals are resuming elective surgeries.
Up-to-date count of available hospital beds, etc. in the State (the Detroit area is "Section 2, North and South.")(government website)
State of affairs May 5 - about half as many hospitalized cases and ICU cases as on April 12 (archive).
Detroit field hospital, capacity 1,000, closed. Never had many more than 20 at any time. (archive, May 7).

LAW AND ORDER
All localities given more discretion to release prisoners early (archive). It was an executive order. Who knows if it's still valid?
Lansing (the capitol) police are not physically responding to minor crimes such as larceny, property damage, and break-ins to unoccupied buildings, including garages. Other police are adopting similar policies (archive) (archive).
Detroit shootings up, but most other crime down (archive - April 30); Muskegon police report crime is up (archive).
Breaking the lockdown is a misdemeanor, punishable by $1500 fines and 90 days jail time. (Still valid???) Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has stated there will not be a "ramp up" of police enforcement (archive). The attorney general has left it to local law enforcement to close businesses, as her hands are full with price-gougers and con artists (archive).
The police cannot, at present, pull drivers over simply for being out during the shutdown (archive). Multiple sherrifs from the rural north to Detroit suburbs have stated they will not be enforcing parts or the entirety of the order (archive).

OFFICIAL DEATH TOLL

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reviews deaths and adds overlooked cases to the count three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Recovery counts are updated on Saturdays.
35 deaths were added yesterday.

MDHHS said:
Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff three times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS). If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website.

I barely ever see vitamin D deficiency here 'cause it's fucking Florida.

Vitamin D deficiency is however fairly common above the 37th parallel. It's probably worth supplementing in that case, especially if you're not consuming any foods that have been fortified with it.
