It looks like EVS faked some sales early in his Rekt Planet campaign, then put another large sum on the take it over TenNapel's comic.


EVS likes to use the net to troll and for fakery. He hated Trump then Trump won and he started using Trump as a device to troll leftists and it blew up in his face. Was he a real Trump supporter or just pretending to be so he could troll people in the comic book industry? Whichever the case, and I think he was just trolling, he didn't realize just how butthurt leftists would be after Trump's win.

It was already apparent to DC that he was never going to be one of the top artists and sales draws in the industry. He was never going to be a John Byrne type who could all by himself take a poorly selling comic and make it a top seller. He would never have the respect and big name drawing power of McNiven because his art was not as pleasing to the eye and it was clear, he had went as far as he was going to go, he was not improving and was actually deteriorating. He tried drawing realistic like the masters: Bolland, McNiven, Adams, Reis, but his drawings looked like Bolland inked the amateur drawings of an 11 year old kid.

He had already went to Marvel and killed their interest in him. Other creators were refusing to work with him. His trolling about Trump was going to hurt sales of any comic he would do for them. He was not an asset to them he was a liability. So considering all those things...DC knew he couldn't hurt them by helping the competition and he was an increasing pain in the ass for them.

Then a DC employee complained that EVS harassed him. And at that point, DC cut his dead weight loose. He seemed to think that even if DC editors hated him, he was too valuable to be dropped or fired by DC Comics. And when DC did let him go and no legit publisher wanted him, his bubble was burst. All the staged fan following crap, the rise of his ego, his delusions about his worth to DC Comics...it all came crashing down.

And so now he lives in a knew delusional world where he ran off to IGG, sold comics to a few thousand people, and is somehow hurting DC and Marvel Comics. He went from one imaginary world to another. His ego has been re-inflated as he repeatedly points to this number and that thing that supposedly proves he is a big name in comics. Now each day is about keeping EVS' new delusion and revived ego alive.

I actually do kind of like EVS. I have a lot of respect for his work and the amount of money he's made in the past 2 years on IGG.

Having said that, I also am impressed with the energy you guys spend A-logging him. In a way it's truly mesmerizing. I personally would channel that energy differently, but different strokes and all that.

Given he voted for Obama apparently, I assume that Trump was only one of two big things (probably the bigger due to the lack of maturity that I keep forgetting the "pros" have). I imagine his refusal to be productive as an artist did a lot of damage too, and it just gave them a great excuse.

Honestly, I don't see how CG (or crowdfunders generally) ever solve the whole shipping conundrum, especially to countries outside burgerland. Just too expensive to interest normies. Its a pity they can't somehow hook into Amazon Prime and print the books (somehow) via Print on Demand and ship 'em a lot of places for free or at minimal cost, but I doubt that is going to be a feasible option any time soon, if ever. For a whole lot of reasons. To say nothing of the fact that that would mean not collecting all the shekels to produce the book up-front.

What YBZ, EVS, Mallin and the Breitweissers could do was start their own Image: a non-profit that takes the money for printing comics and then providing distribution through Diamond and/or Amazon. Being able to produce large numbers of comics would drive their costs down, for instance, Expendables go to Hell has 3.232 backers. Assuming reach of them gets only one book (they are not) YBZ has to print 3300 books + 10% for defectives/lost books, lets say 3700 books.
Now, the major cost for these books is the fees for the art and setting up the print. The actual books are very cheap and you can easily get some thousand more than that with little extra cost.
So, the cost per book is the production cost (let's call it T) and a very small cost per printed book (let's call it c). So cost per book for x amount of books = (T+c*x)/x = T/x+c . For x+1000 books it becomes (T+c*(X+1000))/(x+1000) = T/(x+1000) + c, so the more books printed the less you pay per book.
Increasing the production decreases the cost per book.

HOWEVER:
a) you still have to sell more books to get more profit. Being a divisive group of people that has powerful people blocking them means that distribution can be harder. For instance, if I had a LCS I wouldn't get any Jawbreakers for display, just for pull lists, simply because an autist SJW visiting my shop could flip their lid and cause me problems.
b) you ceede a lot of money to the distributor and LCS
c) starting this company requires management and gatekeeping. No-one of them wants to do that. EVS wants to be a rockstar on YouTube, Zack is too detail oriented to manage more than one book at a time, Mallin doesn't seem to want to do that. Mitch did it and lost too much time away from producing his book. And you see how gatekeeping unreliable creators off streams creates so much drama.

No, the CG model is not efficient and it cannot become efficient at no point.


PS: About the CG politics: I get the impression all of the core CGers are either center-right (Zack, EVS) or center left (Mallin, Cecil). They could occasionally flip to the other side (vote for Obama or Trump) but mostly vote for their party. They are the people who decide who will be the president. To them, politics are secondary to comics (or rockstardom - I do believe EVS is not doing things for money, but to feed his ego) and most of the rest are mostly centrists.
YBZ's CG was never about politics or about "non politica" (an infamous far-right dog whistle), it was about tallent and consumers being driven out because of progressive politics.
This is why hard conservatives like Doug, Cummings and Smiller were driven away.
