Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

Snooping Ethan's campaign page I came across Literature Devils "Doctor Alpha" campaign. I'll admit I found his story description interesting but one look at these pages has me wondering how such blatantly amateur hour work could fund to almost 50K.

Did Ethan give this trash the Wort the Wizard treatment while I wasn't looking? Lit Devil never struck me as the eTHOT type.

I'm sure his artist, Jeff Kraven, is a nice kid but looking up his stuff he's clearly not ready to do art on any serious attempt at a book going for $100 hardcover and $20 digital only $25 softcover.

Lol he'll be waiting a long time for an answer to that.

Edit: I privated all my old content because I changed direction on my channel to just talk horror movies/books, but I made this one unlisted for you guys, when I had Liam on🙄his indiegogo is even in the description.

The only person gatekeeping Liam is himself...
He comes off like a pretentious prick, can barely pitch his projects and looks like a hobbit smelling his farts in a brandy glass. No wonder he failed to fund his project...

And that stream is painful...

Better than any JDA campaign. It has that Canales "you can see what I was going for, right?" vibe with a bit of John Totleben in the finishes. (Canales seems like a good guy on twitter, but not a fan of his scribbles.)

Still, if The Case of the Littlest Umbrella can get to 6 figures....

The art is stylized but actually good imho. Not stellar, but very expressive and I can see it on a published graphic novel

I don't have the stream in question but he did. I think he's starting to realize that despite the fact his crowdfunders keep breaking records a lot of the smaller campaigns appear to be doing worse now than compared to the smaller campaigns of 2018 (eg: Nasser, Ben Henessey, Antonio Brice & Malpica). Ethan and Warcampaign are in a war for the hearts and minds of the smaller creators to further valid their respective side, so I think Ethan finally realizes that he needs to grow CG's audience not really for his own sake but for the sake of others who have pledged loyalty to him.

There has been no shortage of comments in this thread and elsewhere reporting that it appears there are more CG creators than ever right now, but the audience itself appears to be shrinking.

Looks like it’s a good time for my “ending this week” stats:

Out of 41 comics projects ending in the next seven days on Kickstarter, 32 are already funded. Out of the remaining 9, two are past the 75% mark, giving a 78-83% project funding rate.

Out of 16 projects ending this week on IGG, eight are already funded. None of the remaining eight are anywhere close to 75%, leaving us with a flat 50% funding rate this week.

While I also agree that this art certainly isn’t terrible, I do see this as the result of what happens when you have to pick artists from an ever-shrinking “consumer movement”. The best ones all either end up working only with the big fish or waiting for their chance to work with said fish and never giving you the time of day, thus you end up having to work with someone whose art might not be the best match for what you’re going for instead of just hiring a freelancer or something.

Canales is better and that's not saying much. Canales is better with perspective and his cartoony style is more appealing then the failed attempt at whatever style Kraven was going for here.

I'm sure with work Kraven can improve but this looks like high school notebook tier art and there's no excuse for that on a $50,000 campaign. Devil should spend more than $50 a page and get an artist with some experience and skills. I'd be embarrassed if I was him.

I think the interior art is okay, but those covers -- as covers -- are kinda lame.

Then again, nothing I'm seeing here is worth $25, or whatever a paper copy costs, presumably plus shipping.

Not awful, but not a good value for the money proposition. IMO.

There is a simple solution to that problem when your campaign raises 50K. You spend the money and level up. Pay the kid you fire (Kraven) to do a bonus ashcan or something if you feel bad about it. At 110 pages Devil could line up a decent artist for under $15000 (probably overseas) and have a book that comes closer to justifying the ridiculous price point.

As it is it looks to me like Devil thought he might only raise ten grand and hired accordingly. If he raised in that neighborhood I'd give it less flack because it's to be expected but this bad art for a 50K campaign.

My problem with it is that his drawings lack solidity, which comes with practice & experience, & understanding form. His storytelling is a close-up, close-up, close-up....it's not my thing, but I've definitely seen stuff as bad from Marvel & DC of late (cue YBZ saying "look at the screen.")
