Then dont.
Step 2 (if you failed to follow step one ) dont fight the poilce stop and think Is it worth having extra charges tacted on and your ass beat for making cops life more difficult (possibly getting killed)

Pretty sure just about everyone here who was a leftist/centrist is feeling the same way you are right now. I grew up watching Jon Stewart, thinking the Democrats really did want to help. When I attended an inner-city school for the first time, I almost got the shit kicked out of me by a black girl for talking to someone she didn't like. I had never done or said anything mean to her. She just didn't like that I was white. Liberal Arts high school wasn't better, you just had to listen to POEMS of people talking about how awful your race is, and how much they hate you. It sucks realizing that your friends aren't really your friends. The only thing you can do is find a good community full of like-minded people, really.

I'm going to disagree with the French being tolerant and lackadaisical about their slaves in Haiti. People weren't kind and thoughtful to each other when they were of the same social and economic class and they were outright cruel when it came to the poor, criminals, servants and of course slaves during that era. I don't believe the French were any nicer to slaves than the Spanish or Americans.

Slave revolts were also common in Spanish territories and Brazil but they never progressed to outright massacres because slaves were tightly controlled yet African religions and languages survived relatively intact. That also happened in parts of the South, to a lesser extent.

Consider the climate and the crops in the Caribbean. For example sugar cane was harvested by hand using machetes, under hot and humid weather with mosquitoes and diseases rampant. Malaria was a real and common hazard. You could say the same about parts in the southern US. The revolt in Haiti occurred for various reasons but the French being too nice to their slaves is not one of them.

When I was in high school School of choice was starting up, before School of choice there was maybe one or two major fights a school year at most, as soon as the inner city kids came though, it was almost daily and just the inner city kids (normally after school let out).
