He's not a "random guy," he was a major contributor to investigations in the Oklahoma City bombing, the Columbine shootings, and one of the most important media personalities in the post 9/11 era, exposing Al Qaeda movements and influencing the FAA's decision to maybe actually care about airport security. He was a very accomplished investigative journalist, and yeah, that requires a lot of connections, including federal law enforcement. The reason he's not dispelling the belief that he has important connections is more than likely because it's true.

I can't claim to know what's in Hansen's head, but I do believe he went into this wanting to do the right thing. Whether that included reliving his glory days on Dateline and getting all that clout, it's probably likely but that's not something I particularly hold against him. I rather just think he should have stayed retired and saved himself the humiliation of being a boomer navigating YT.
