Because he stuck his neck out where it didn't belong. That's not how real world interactions take place. In the real world, you keep your head down and you ignore everyone else. If you see something, you don't say anything. You mind your own business. And this is exactly why, by the way. It's because you can't defend the actions of someone else because you don't understand anyone else. Empathy is a flawed, inaccurate concept and no one is a mind reader. Hassan has no way of knowing who June really is or why she has said or done anything in the past, so trying to defend her is asinine and pointless and of course it was ineffective.
