I fear my art devolving like that. Ive lost all desire to pursue "art" despite getting scholarships and credits for it, as its just become a grind. Everyone can do it nowadays.
You're not the only one. I can't find the posts at the moment, but several weeks ago in one of the riot threads a few Kiwis briefly mentioned how they've abandoned the art world, at least online. Their desire to create still has a pulse, but the desire to share and find groups who like and create similar styles has died. The fear of a devolving style was on a long list of worries. Other's include:
- The demand to illustrate characters from children's shows as political mouthpieces.
- Being harassed to post something that shows support for BLM and the riots of peace.
- Insert list of characters who suddenly need to be drawn as female, black, morbidly obese, etc. but you have to do it a certain way otherwise you're FeTiShIzInG them. And you probably shouldn't even bother if you're white because then you're just faking being an ally or something. I have seen some white women get praise for shifting gears and suddenly posting almost nothing but dark skinned deathfat naked danger hairs... but you still have to be submissive, roll onto your back, and pull a WELCOME mat over your torso. And if you dare try to post anything else, or anything that shows genuine inclusiveness (a positive portrayal of straight pride and white men), then get ready to have your posts report bombed because you hurt someone's feelings, you body-shaming racist.

On top of all of that, it seems like any attention starved autist with an iPad is getting on Procreate and shitting out copies of whatever stiff troon-looking eyesores they saw earlier on Twitter for woke points. Incoming PL: it's been about a decade since I lost any desire to share my illustrations online, and while I sometimes miss the communities I was part of, I rather not be hounded about why my 12 year old Sailor Moon fan art isn't more "diverse". Woke culture is cancer.

Agree with all you said, but i want to touch on the BLM posting. I mostly use IG now and remember when Id see myself tagged during the "support a black artist" trend that was going on. Not to seem like a sped, but i have a thing about not sharing my race because i do not want to be put in a box. Now how do I look, not saying a peep about BLM or rioting, while being outed as a POKoolaid, or not participating in this artist sharing. I look like a selfish asshole.

I ended up sharing this in my stories to share my political beliefs and have been quiet about it.

Im well aware my art lacks any racial diversity, as far as set characters are concerned. Drawing cultural outfits and fashion is the best ive done for my minority/culture brownie points. Id love to see a brown troon oc in a traditional hanbok or Siwalai and not the usual hoodie/jeans combo or obvious western garb and incorrect hijab. If you want to be diverse, put in the effort at least ffs

The pressure to grind out art every day or twice a week is hell to the psyche, i imagine. Then you have to compete with the IG kwaii pros or cutsey pop 14yo kids with brand deals. If they are pursuing art then i dont really care, but deep down you still feel jealous as an artist haha. I only follow industry pros who talk nowadays, as they usually keep politics to twitter and share free classes.

*Edit: forgot about porn, and how everyone wants porn, or yaoi content. I have no beef with folks who draw yaoi but that sparkle eye, bright color, and constant 8 pack drives me up a wall. Its just a personal peeve of mine. Commit to twinks or commit to opening an anatomy book

I still have that obsessive need to create (i do props now as a job) and draw if i can, so i stick to studying anatomy as that never changes. If you learn how the arms works, how hands are, how leg muscles are placed and where the ribs sit, then you can draw anything.
There's no excuse for noodle legs, legs can literally be copied and flipped in a program, or manually on paper
fandoms on twitter are not the art industry though. You can literally not have any of those social media accounts and still do more than fine as an artist, most people in the industry are doing backstage work and are not sjw in any way.

Just do what most do , just open an artstation portfolio, follow artists on there and don't bother with anywhere else. Most of those tumblrites are not even employable anyways, theres even a lot of artists who promote their work on social media and have their patreons and are not vocal or anything beyond their work so using that as an excuse is an exageration and a copout, just avoid the noise, gid gud and project onto the proper channels.

Most aren't, but when one gets through it's a doozy.
TL;DR for that art - It's an alien, the artist says it's an alien, fans of WW wonder why it's an alien, artist gets pissed and says everyone is a body-shaming hater.
I agree with your post. Obviously it's not all bad and you don't have to exist on social media to be a success (thank goodness), I just wish other artists I follow would get that and stop trying to please the mob. I guess they'll either learn the hard way or their art will turn into that stiff troon-y mess I mentioned earlier.
ETA: I'm not MOTI or loosing sleep over it. It was good entertainment to see the "muh rEaLiStIc body" crowd was having a meltldown over a fat "alien".

The thing that annoys me about BIPOC is how exclusive it is. Wasn't POC good enough? It gives top billing to two groups, while putting the others aside as an afterthought.
The "I" is only there for the casinobux and the fact that no one wants to be on the wrong side of a native person.

It’s certainly disheartening. I’ve been teaching myself to draw, with no real background in art apart from a teenage weeb phase of terrible manga drawings with no regard for anatomy, so I’m starting with the absolute basics, working towards the semi-realistic/cartoonish style often seen in fantasy art. I’m in a lot of fandoms and have a desire to express my passion for nerdy shit through the medium of drawing, but when pride flags and characters drawn darker and fatter than they should be are so ubiquitous there are so many tutorials out there on that particular style.

Most of the sources I’ve been using are from well before this shit came about, Andrew Loomis’ books are fairly timeless for instance, but I fear for when it comes time to narrow down my style to one specific one.

I feel ya on that because i come from the same places. It's been an uphill battle for me seeing more popular people having stuff to show constantly, much better than anything you can do mainly because of lack of experience. But nuking all your social media and focusing on what is important is something that can help you. I never engage with fandoms because sooner or later dramastorms will hit and you don't want to get caught on any of that shit. If you do something, do it for yourself and people you like. This is why i focus on my personal projects (full of steel donuts) and somewhat obscure shit like Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress or Cultist Simulator. And if it comes down to engage with people about your art, have the criticism go at how you do, not at what you do. After all, the creator of Wonder Woman was a betacuck with a domination fetish that thought women should rule the world. And i have a soft spot for half naked barbarians.
There's no reason to be afraid for that. Just let it happen naturally-- over time your choices, your every "hey, I like how it looks when I..." will accumulate into your own unique style.
This is one of the best pieces of advice anyone can give you. Draw and draw more. Eventually, you will see the things you don't like and correct them. You will see your mistakes and avoid them. As you do it, your own style will come out drawing after drawing. Just try different things and see if you like them or not.

Of course, that happens, sometimes shit floats, but is not something to loose sleep over. Is also nothing new, it just the usual thing with fads and decisions that come from marketing execs trying to cash in and generate some buzz based solely on whats being talked about in the short term. Seems like comics is usually the worst victim, the history of comics has a lot of weird high and lows, doesn't seem to be anything comic industry are not willing to try.

If we were in early 00s when DA was becoming big the same crowd that is making calartsy sjw cartoons today would have been making fanart and self insert anime OCs just because it was the fad back then and most people are just followers of whats hype. A bunch DA teenagers lucky enough to join the bandwagon early became massively popular on that site, enough that they got traditional press interview and stuff and some got offered some small deals to maybe make an artbook or a comic or some ad campaign but most of those then faded into obscurity pretty quick as most were amateurs to begin with, just cashing in on popular styles of the time like emo until the fad died and was no reason to invest in them. Those who kept going and kept on growing probably assimilated into a more stable field and became just like every other pro artist that wasn't e-famous in the first place, doing their freelance and studio work and focusing on improving their craft so is not worth getting demoralized over the smokes and mirrors of internet popularity contests, all roads lead to Rome.

I remember people who had like 3 million followers on DA and would only make sameface nagas or harry potter ocs that looked drawn by Dobson lol, people who took after them probably got a bit misled as to what the professional demand was, only a few luckiy ones got really popular and even less cashed in on those styles. It also reminds me also of the early wave of youtubers, those guys got super popular making grainy cellphone videos but their relevance came and went.

It can be a curse to some, a few DA famous people really had trouble adapting to career switches after they spend several years being known by everybody for only hentai fanservice of copyrighted anime characters. I personally know of one da artist older than me that i admired a lot ( not gonna namedrop) , but who really took a hit psychologically while trying to switch to a different type of work, he is doing alright but he never really shook of the DA days reputation and is still having to cash in on it as his goal projects never really took off to outshine it. I also learned from him that the "popularity --> money" conversion can be pretty shitty, it varies wildly, for every Sakimichan theres a lot more efamous artists making an usa minimum wage (which is my country is pretty high and nothing to complain about if im honest but what i mean is not exactly millionaire cash nor that much higher than what someone not popular can make)

How is it I don't know this person's name yet I still know exactly the person you are talking about?

I have no idea what the name of that artist was, i only have vague flashbacks of what the art looked but can't name any of the popular artists that were always always on the front page of that site on its heyday. All the shitty sasukes pinups will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

If you don't know about Harry Potter Naga Mpreg you're too young to use this website.

You mean Snapesnogger?
