If Bob had a real sense of comic book history he would have known that Batman was on the verge of cancellation before O'Neill and Adams took over to take the character back to his roots. Frankly, I believe that Bob has a problem with sincerity in entertainment. Everything has to be "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" because he wants feel smart without having to put in any work. As
@Flexo said with
Superman '78 it was about believing a man could fly and Christopher Reeve did an excellent job at making the Man of Steel feel like a real person rather than a character. Same with Gal Gadot in
Wonder Woman. She may not be in the same league (pun not intended) as Reeve as an actress, but she played Diana with charm and sincerity to make the character feel real enough to relate to as a fish out of water. Bob just self-referential humor because he sees it as a shortcut for his "criticisms" of film, which are really the the most shallow of characterizations.
