I get it. But not all handicapped people are evil, childish or corrupt like Chris is. I do blame his parents to a reasonable degree, particularly how little services they put Chris in, and how they babied him as he read Goosebumps books into his teens, and how Barbara kept making boxed mac and cheese when Chris was a teen/adult.Sorry no.
(And who exactly would pay for this?)
I trust the good citizens of rural Virginia to figure out for themselves as to what level of services for autists they need and/or want.
There is a tradeoff to anything in life. You can’t expect to live in rural Virginia, and get the benefits of cheaper living, less stress and crime and more space. And also get the same kind of access to social services and specialized programs as you do in metropolitan areas.
And of course, the Chandlers DID receive offers of help, but mostly turned them down. (Chris was diagnosed at the university hospital though, and also received speech therapy if I recall correctly.)
Three important conclusions that the vast majority of Christorians come to are:
1: Chris is an irredeemable asshole.
2: The main source of Chris’s problems... Is Chris.
3: It’s useless to get mad at him. Or to help him. He is what he is. The cat raids a birds nest because it’s in its nature. Likewise, Chris is a selfish grifter and does stupid shit because it’s in his nature.
But Chris also acts like an angry toddler in a kindergarten playroom, filled to the rim with toys and video games from his tugboat. If he had true independence, he wouldn’t have spent his whole adult life in his playroom with mommy and daddy.
Offering reasonable services and education, though, could prevent a generation of (or at least many, though not all) handicapped and emotionally troubled people from becoming the next Chris Chan. I know we can’t fix Chris, but we could help those who don’t want to end up like him.
