If there is life after death, I hope Scalia and Ginsburg are riding elephants together wherever they are now.

At one point people with completely different political views could put aside their political differences aside to have fun together, bond as co-workers, and see each other as human beings past the dumb arbitrary barriers humans throw up around themselves. I'm sure you hate at least one of the people in that photo but what's important is that they were able to come together to have fun together and see each other as equals. Its a lesson that is more important today than it was years ago when that photo was taken.

Yeah the "old guard" Republican justices have proven to be mostly spineless cucks playing it safe and keeping the status quo, but with these newer people Trump is getting in, as well as flipping lower courts like the 9th (which was BIG) there's ever increasing chances of blatantly unconstitutional laws to get struck down. It's a very long shot since Trump himself hasn't been the most friendly wrt the 2nd (bump stock ban), but the justices have a better shot.

Both the George Bush judges on the bench have expressed at least tentative Pro-Gun sentiment. Roberts really is the big block as his writings have leant more towards the "Reasonable gun control" side of things. While I don't expect the Bush judges to be as gung-ho as the Trump ones, they are likely to vote to have a case HEARD at least. Its Roberts who has ensured those cases stay off the docket. And he can't do that if there is a clear majority wanting to see them. Its only a position he is privileged to have due to being the tiebreaker.

Remember that Democrats have been normalizing the notion of packing the court or adding ways to force Justices from office for the last 4 years. They can still spin her being replaced into a pro-turnout issue.

The democrats who care about the court are also the ones who have been freaking out about Trump. I don't see otherwise uninspired voters suddenly being energized to vote because of this. There was an open seat last time too and that didn't drive turnout.

This is the only way to get 2nd Amendment issues to them. Roberts has shown himself to never want to see them. If there is one more conservative on the bench, those are a lot more likely to be seen.

I think a theory floated out there was that it's far safer to refuse to hear 2A cases while the Supreme Court is still split, as upholding the status quo and leaving room for a future hearing under more favorable circumstances is still far better than a definitive open-and-shut decision at the Supreme Court.
