Chris has committed two very common errors among Christians. The first is that
you should not evaluate the Bible based on the sinful behaviors of fallible human beings, even people in the church. The temptation to pass judgement is very understandable; I succumb to this even now, but Chris should bear this in mind if he were still in the flock (which he is no longer). The second is that you cannot take the Bible
a la carte, I agree with this but object to that. If you have doubts about whatever part of the Bible you should ask for pastoral assistance.
I have a similar experience as this person. The Senior Pastor in my church is very leftist (while his wife is extreme right), but he is spiritually sophisticated enough not to let politics become
the stumbling block for the flock -- well, most of the time. I did very occasionally get angry at some of his throwaway comments -- and when I got angry at church matters, I pray and then talk it out with pastors.
