Post the old YouTube fads that you miss... - as well as the ones you don't.

I miss all the re: videos fuck you could find some great autism goinging through that. I used to watch anime on there which was nice.I also remeber the "weird side of youtube" You where always 1 click away from weird fart fetish shit or other strange shit.

Going way back to 2006 I remember tons of videos that would edit together random things or edit things to be funny, usually old TV shows and anime is what I would see mixed together.

I remember one video that included a clip from The Waltons of John Boy saying "some Storm Troopers came out to my house the other night" and then cut to a clip from Star Wars of Stormtroopers saying "WE THINK HE MAY BE ON LEVEL 7!" but sadly that video is gone.

Here's a surviving video though from that era that gives you an idea of the kind of thing I'm talking about.

There was just so much strange stuff to find on Youtube back before stuff either got deleted or buried under a sea of clickbait garbage, it was more fun to just randomly browse than it is today.

Some other random, long gone things I remember is a video of a group of gun wielding rednecks walking up and someone off camera says in a stereotypical gay voice "Hey, this is a private gay resort!" and one of the rednecks responds "oh yeah?" before they all open fire, shooting at presumably nothing and then one of the rednecks says "handy with the steel, mother fucker!" as they walk off.

I also remember watching some video some teens had filmed with a VHS camcorder in the early 1990s wandering around their suburban neighborhood and one of them making some comment about "white niggers"

There's a lot of weird memories of random stuff I saw on Youtube like that that's long gone.

I also remember what a great source of old TV shows it used to be, I remember watching a lot of episodes MST3K and Tales From The Crypt.

Back when it was both freer and less flooded with clickbait were definitely interesting days for Youtube, I don't hate modern Youtube, there's still plenty of great stuff to be found, but a certain something has definitely been lost.

Speaking of the Mario side of Youtube. For some reason making videos using plush toys was super popular and I'm not talking about the crazily overproduced stuff you see today. Back then you could tell that it was literally just two kids and a camera making videos for the fun of it.The most notable example I can give is Super Mario Logan who only recently seems to have stopped uploading.

I think I know what you’re talking about. I used to see it a bunch with the Littlest Pet Shop toys (the cute ones before that abomination of a show was made), it was honestly adorable to watch as a teenager having grown out of that phase but still holding it dear. I can’t remember any details at this point, but I do remember being surprised that ten year olds can be pretty damn clever and funny in their pretend play.

I also remember the endless vlog debates people would have back and forth over atheism vs Christianity, George W Bush, 9/11 conspiracy theories.

Does anyone remember TheDispatcher? A guy who would film videos while dispatching semi trucks or taxi cabs or something like that? I seem to remember hearing he died.

I miss making friends on YouTube. Back then you could add friends, inbox them, comment on each other's channel. I didn't upload any videos, but I had a ton of friends.

I miss not having your real name displayed too. I don't even comment on videos these days. I can't be bothered to make a second Google account without my real name.

- Comment sections being straight-up shit flinging as opposed to soyboy passive-aggressive shouting.
- No ads outside of youtube's ads asking you to upload content of yourself and see if you made their list for future partnership.
- The YT app allowing you to play videos while the phone is locked without either using a modded app or paying.
- The rabbit holes that ended up on truly weird and creepy videos due to almost no regulation outside of blatant CP.
The themes, you could put custom background images, I don't remember if they had custom headers, probably? But it was really neat even if everyone had super tacky shit. I think I had some casino themed one because I wanted my channel to be gothic themed, even though all I did was upload Maplestory AMVs...

Shit like this but with the old layout
You needed a plug-in for this IIRC, right?
Otherwise you wouldn't see anyone's shit and no one would see yours.

More importantly, YouTube Poop in general.
That stuff was funny as hell and it really bums me out that Youtube Poop seems to mostly be a passe thing.

One creepy video I found once was a guy filming what I assume was a prostitute to shake her ass in thong lingerie while he made lewd comments, the guy had a distinctive and kinda creepy sounding voice, that would have been 2006 I think.

I also remember in 2012 stumbling upon a diaper fetishist simply filming a close up of him filling a diaper with shit, filmed in 1080p no less with someone simply asking "but why?" in the comments in regards to the resolution.

Same here. I've got a whole list of fond memories of Classic YouTube

1. AMV's in general

2. "Tribute" slideshow-style videos made with Windows Movie Maker

3. ShadowLeggy's Resident Evil cartoons

4. CAW wrestling leagues

5. People just yakking in front of webcams about whatever idle thoughts were on their mind. Think along the lines of ultimatekai or Willy Will.

6. Abridged Series and general dub-over parodies

7. The 10-minute time limit was mildly annoying but surprisingly made things a lot easier to find

8. Videos about GTA myths and urban legends

9. Fanmade Adult Swim bumpers

10. King of the Hill YTP's

I also remember the endless vlog debates people would have back and forth over atheism vs Christianity, George W Bush, 9/11 conspiracy theories.

I remember a lot of that. In a weird way, a lot of the stuff that would become hallmarks of the Current Year culture wars had their roots in the weird side of YouTube. Some of the big ones I can think of from that era would be...

1. Ron Paul (and Dennis Kucinich to a lesser extent) as the OG Meme Candidates that eventually paved the way for Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump

2. Johnny Rebel songs (and Civil War-themed songs being misattributed to Johnny Rebel)

3. Zeitgeist: The Movie and general conspiracy sperging over 9/11

4. Atheism vs. Christianity sperging

5. Black Hebrew Israelites/We Wuz Kangz insanity

6. Jews Did WTC/Run The World Bank/Invented AstroTurf conspiracy videos. Some would bring up legit points about Israeli military abuses but others were pure bugfuck insane @Gigantic Faggot territory

7. End of the World/NWO sperging

Yes, so much free anime, chopped into thirds to be under 11 minutes (which is hilarious as now Youtube will fuck you over if you aren't at least that long.)

Early YouTube was just a bastardised MySpace in terms of structure and layout. However instead of a focus on platforming musicians and aspiring models like MySpace did, YouTube allowed just for about anyone to grow at the forefront. They used to gauge who was growing within which region, even had a far more useful star rating system to really understand what videos stood out. Now the algorithm doesn't care, dislikes are just as valid as likes and will shift the video to the top.

The friends feature and social-posting page/s ultimately have come back via the "Community" and "Featured Channels" tabs.

Old layout was bloated as shit in it's own ways. Just because it was a little more colourful than the current does not outright mean it's better. Most of YouTube's traffic is via mobile now, don't wanna waste people's data on your low-res backdrop.
