And you just explained the idiocy of this sort of opposition. It's not changing the institution, simply expanding it. By this logic, it was bad for Christianity and other major religions to expand to the Western Hemisphere. The religion itself did not change solely for this reason, any changes came about from offshoots of the religion or high ranking members of the faith reinterpreting parts of the texts, something that would happen regardless of the religions' geographic boundaries. This is exactly the same, perhaps even better in the fact that the marriage process itself doesn't have to change.
Also, vital purpose? This is quite the interesting claim. You would bar people from a vital purpose, yet at the same time this "vital purpose" seems immaterial since there are times when it was outlawed for everybody in certain societies, most of which survived.

There's nothing wrong with being mentally ill. It is what it is. What is wrong is when someone who is as mentally ill isn't getting the help they need.

If all he does is get meds, he's probably still fucked. In general, psychiatric medication is only a symptom suppressant, patients still keep most of the toxic traits cultivated in this time. If Holden is diagnosed, he'd need therapy to correct these, and for his own sake it should be through inpatient.
