A lot of people are too lazy to make interesting characters that aren't just one-dimensional self inserts, especially with existing characters. Their focus is always "how gay/trans can I make this?" instead of "how can i expand on this universe and make it believable and fun?", as a writer it pains me to see it.

It also pains me and makes me think how many people can actually go with it and think that there is nothing wrong with it. I know that making a complex character takes a lot of time and effort properly fleshing out their characteristics, past and everything that made them who they are at the moment you put them. And also their reaction with other characters and how through those relationships they can change themselves for good (or not. Corruption arcs also exist).

When i look at the things i wrote a long time ago i really cringe with the sheer embarrassment of what i did in comparison of what i make today. And to be honest, the characters that have many facets and struggle with their flaws are the most memorable ones. This is why the SJW character repertoire is not only bad, but completely forgettable since there is nothing that makes you feel any sort of emotion or connection to the characer past the "it has the same skintone/sexuality than me" and they are "perfect in any way" despite being really bad in every way.

Nothing wrong as long as you don't make it absurdly important/powerful/perfect. Otherwise, you're gay and your characters too.

Let's take Shi Long Lang from AA. He starts off as a douche that constantly refuses help and gets in the way of Edgeworth's investigation. If it was just simply that, he would be unlikable in every sense. But later you learn that the reputation of his family as law enforcers was ruined by a prosecutor and because of that not even the president trust his clan.

One of the things people sometimes forget is that if you make a character with a somewhat unlikable personality, they need to have a justification for that. Not just "i'm just like this" because that makes them irredeemable and absolutely unlikable in any sense. A justification makes you relate and understand better the character rather than them behaving like an asshole because they are like that.

He's actually like that because he blames himself for the death of a friend, that if he hadn't asked of the friend to meet up in a certain location, the friend wouldn't be caught up in a car accident. Because of that, he doesn't want friends afterwards to suffer the same incident.

He later grows out of that mindset throughout the game, gaining and trusting friends. And taking off his headphones at the end.

Why does this kind of personality type get used so much on fan OCs and OCs? Its never done for a fitting character type or taken for a spin like 'foreigner takes everything literal and accidentally says some brutal honesty because not being socially adept to the new culture, but is still learning', which is better and brings more to the table than just being a general asshole.
Then they get surprised that being a jerk to everyone has consequences and/or nobody wants to be around that person. It's like they want others to bow down and just take it as is.
Mind you, jerk characters can be done well but these people want to be jerks because... They're jerks. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.

I think a lot of it has to do with the kids and wo/man-children who makes this being socially awkward introverts, so the fantasy of being the “cool witty sarcastic one who Tells It Like It Is and can sass all their opposition into submission with their sharp tongue” appeals to them - the SJW stuff is just a type flavoring more than the cause. You’ll see the same character archetype in a lot of shitty webcomics too.

But since they’re usually not good writers and that kind of sarcastic character is hard to pull off already, and they either don’t have the self awareness to realize their character just comes off as unnecessarily cunty or are convinced that they should be totally justified treating everyone like shit, these characters come off as un-funny versions of this instead:

Threads like these really do affirm the extent to which post-2010s troonism is a creature of the internet. It's only on the internet - and really only within the confines of troon-intersecting subcultures - that any of this is capable of making sense.

How is anyone whose sense of self is grounded in non-online relationships meant to even make sense of any of these questions? They all assume gender is some internal aesthetic sense, there is no hint that gender is constituted socially; no sense that it exists as much in eyes of others as it does in your own mind. This is the perspective of the online loner deep in the tar pits of a deranged subculture. It is only on the internet where sex doesn't matter - there's something to the old saying that "There are no girls on the internet" - and 'gender' insofar as it exists is just a front, a profile picture, some pronouns, It's all just internal fantasy play. It goes without saying that this guy doesn't have a job or children.
