What game did you finish today?

Noticed my Gamerscore was lacking recently so I marathoned Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell on Wednesday. Brought up my score my about 810 points in one day, so I can feel proud about accomplishing nothing. Yaaaay imaginary goals.

Fallout. Sure it is aged, put together with limited resources and somewhat lacking in locations, but it still manages to handle the bleak feel and grim nature of post apocalyptic wasteland better than any of the sequels. Still the best game in the series for me.

Technobabylon. Awesome cyberpunk point and click game, recommended.
Also last week I played through all the Skullgirls campaigns last week and am currently looking at which character(s) to main, I'm thinking Fortune, Valentine and Cerebella atm.

I just beat Max Payne 3..

Holyyyy shiiiit! This game just amazing, way beyond my expectations. I think this may be an unpopular opinion but this game was the best in the series hands down, the story was a hell of a lot more interesting and a lot more unpredictable, and I liked the characters a lot more. Max in particular was a lot more fleshed out and way more interesting, and I like that this time luck was on his side less and he was challenged more and had to find more creative ways out of his situations. He was also a hell of a lot funnier and had better dialogue in this game too. "Baghdad in G-Strings" is definitely a quote I'll remember!

Gameplay wise it was a lot better too. I know some people didn't like that you could only carry 3 weapons at once, but I liked the challenge that added, and the bosses and firefights were a lot tougher. Overall, gameplay wise this was better than the first two and story wise it was a complete turnaround in every way imaginable. Well done Rockstar!

I think I played Max Payne 3 at least 10 or 12 times, I preordered it on release and played it every weekend for at least a couple of months, the gunplay is simply the most fluid, most engaging and most intense of any third person shooter I've played. Storyline was very good too and the James McCaffery was great.
Max Payne 2 still remains my favourite though. What holds MP3 back from being the very best is that it doesn't have the same strong atmosphere that the first two had and the side characters aren't as interesting. The only interesting/likeable character who wasn't Max was Raul, the cast of the older games had way more charisma in its side characters like Vinnie, Mona and Vlad.

I finished Big Rigs...

I finished my very first playthrough of Final Fantasy VII just now.

I remember you mentioning that you were playing it a while back in chat. How did you enjoy it?

I liked it a lot, especially the setting and atmosphere, as well as the music. I took a peek at a walkthrough and it looks like a missed a lot of optional stuff, so I'll have to go back and play another round sometime, but for now I think I'll move on to another title. What, again, did you recommend as a good Final Fantasy game to play next?

Just beaten Final Fantasy 3.

...

I mean 6.

Quite a game this was. I can see why so many people regard it as one of, (if not THE best) Final Fantasys. Although I think I still prefer 9 overall.

There's a lot to appreciate about this game. A lot of the characters were pretty cool. My personal favorite being Shadow. I really liked how his backstory leaves just enough information for players to fill in the gaps themselves.

Kefka was also kinda refreshing as a villain. Most villains have some ulterior motive for their actions. Kefka, not so much, he just fucked everything up for the lulz. Plus the final fight against him was pretty awesome. I think I read somewhere that all his forms were based on The Divine Comedy or something like that?

And, unsurprisingly, the music was great. I think my favorite piece would probably be the WoR airship theme.

Only complaints I have really are that some of the characters (like Gau) I felt weren't really too interesting and the translation can be a little weird at some points. Plus, some stuff in the game apparently doesn't work like it's supposed to. (i.e. the darkness status ailment not doing anything). But hey, it's a game that came out in 1994, I can't be too hard on it when it comes to bugs.

Overall, great game.

The PS1 games are most similar to VII, for obvious reasons, as well as FFVI, so I would say go for one of those, VIII is the most similar as it shares the same type of setting as VII although that game is a bit of a mixed bag, some people love it, some people hate it. They can be pretty easy to emulate and 8 is on steam if that's how you played VII. FFX may also be worth a look.

Play IX, the battle system may be slow, but the world is great and the majority of the main cast is the best in the series. Do you know when a game gives you a feeling that every single aspect works unbelievably well? This game is kind of like that.

Back on Monday, I had spent the day running on top of farm equipment and spent most of the evening with a dull ache that ran from my knee to my ribcage. It's fine now, but then I couldn't sleep so I fgured I'd play vidya until I could pass out. So I marathoned the original Crysis, first level to end boss in one evening. First time I ever played the game and I can understand the "oohs" and "ahhs" about it back in the day, and I could definitely tell it was created behind the same minds that devised Far Cry. Some elements feel archaic by today's standards, but overall I enjoyed it.

Kefka is one of those villains that is one of the most interesting in the series for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest being he actually has an arc.

Kefka's insanity is described as being a result of the Magitek infusions he had. At the very start of the game the player mocks Kefka very often and embarrasses him. Like when you escape him at Figaro castle. There's a fairly pivotal moment when the player "wounds" Kefka and he feels his own mortality.

After the halfway point in the game when he becomes the "god of all magic" Kefka becomes basically immortal and the most powerful person in the universe at that point. But he still feels unsatisfied and insecure and at the very end the protagonist characters all point this out.

That's all very great storytelling and it makes Kefka a much more memorable villain as a result. By comparison characters like Sephiroth, Ultimecia and Kuja are much more one-note and don't really develop all that much as the story goes on. Especially Sephiroth since it's even debatable if he knows Cloud's name.

That is a legitimate complaint of 6 and something I agree with. I think the cast was too large and I think it should've been more focused. Which is why I think they didn't go back to the 6 style of having a big ensemble cast and instead had a single protagonist with a party in 7.

I finished Tales from the Borderlands Episode 3: Catch-A-Ride

Awesome as always, but...

1. HOLY FUCKING ASSCRACKING CLIFFHANGERS, BATMAN! Like, no shit! This is my first Telltale series, and I understand that you need to keep the players on edge, but c'mon! Episode 1 had kind of a cliffhanger, but was more like "Oh man, can't wait for the next episode! This'll be interesting!". Episode 2 left me shitting my pants for months and wondering how the hell my decision at the end would impact Episode 3. More on that next. And this one? Holy fuck, they better hurry up with Episode 4.

2. I trusted Handsome Jack in Episode 2 (I'm a massive Jack fanboy :3 ) and I wasn't disappointed with my choice, though there were a couple of questionable moments later on that made me kind of regret trusting him, yet feel somewhat good about chewing him out on top of the Caravan.

3. Sasha and Rhys are getting a little...eh, well, I was kind of looking forward to Rhys and Fiona getting shipped, but I guess I'm alright with Rhys x Sasha. Even if it does seem a little forced.

4. At the beginning after escaping the Gortys facility, and choosing who to blame everything on, I naturally went with Vasquez. Fuck, my mind was not prepared for the shitstorm that followed. O_O I was expecting him to die, but not THIS soon! Guess we're getting to the point where our choices are having more and more of an impact on the story. Although, since the next episode takes place on Helios, I can smell Rhys sitting in Vasquez's chair at some point.

5. Fuck it, take my man card, because I'm going to say it: Gortys is friggin' adorable! She's like Claptrap, but less annoying! Shit, whatever happened to Claptrap?

6. My timeline question was answered in this episode: This takes place before the events of Athena telling her story in The Pre-Sequel. But at the same time, I'm kinda starting to view Mordecai and Brick the same way I do now with Lilith and Roland after The Pre-Sequel. They aren't really the heroes, especially after seeing Mordecai threaten Fiona. Then again, Vault Hunters are supposed to be ruthless mercenaries, right?

Huh. Never thought of it like that. Looking back, he did take Celes stabbing him in the gut pretty personally to say the least.

I kinda have to disagree about Kuja though. I thought he was one of the more fleshed out and interesting villains in the series. His goals and his inner turmoil that develops later on mesh well with the game's overall theme. And he serves as a nice foil to Zidane and in some ways Vivi as well.

As for the cast size in 6, I personally didn't mind it and I feel it's part of what made 6 unique in it's own way. For the most part, each of the characters had their own decent amount of screen time. With the exception of Mog, Umaro, and Gogo, who I simply view as bonus characters that you have to go out of your way to find. Plus it does create a bunch of interesting scenarios where you have to split them into groups in order to accomplish certain objectives. The final dungeon in particular.

I do prefer having a smaller and more tightly knit cast though. But hey, at least this game didn't take the Chrono Cross route and have over 40 characters to play as.

I finally defeated the final boss in 3D Fantasy Zone, had some feels (no spoilers), and found out why the game is subtitled Opa-Opa Bros.

I finally beat Metroid Prime 2 without using any walkthroughs, it took about as long as you'd think.

Finished all the Parallel Quests in Xenoverse. Now for the DLC quests.
