I think it is less that they can't comprehend heady topics, but that their standards of viewing film are way to rigid, and unequally applied. They expect movies to be incredibly grounded and consistent. MauLer in particular is a massive perfectionist, especially with his reviews. I've said it before, but MauLer wants his main line reviews to be the be-all end-all of reviews of that specific movie, such that no one can refute and that no one can add anything to it. I really hope that Callum tries to try writing something in the future. I truly want to see what he considers up to his own standards which is birthed from his own creativity instead of someone else's. It would enlighten us to a lot.
