In a medical setting, masks and other PPE are worn to prevent the wearers compromising a sterile setting, not to protect them from what other people have. They basically sub-contract all their grunt work out to volunteer/non-profit groups and Americorps crews (at least in the months following the initial response). I was part of an Americorps crew that worked national forests and we ended up helping with the disaster response (not complaining about helping people) and all FEMA did was just send our collective higher-ups lists of houses that needed to be gutted and sprayed with antifungal for them to send us into (all so professionals could come in and spray it all over again with real antifungal).

We had this one lady who kept flip flopping about whether she wanted her house gutted & sprayed, but she kept asking when she would be getting her FEMA check. Finally when someone explained in plain terms with a FEMA guy on speaker phone that she would get her check still even if we cleaned the black fucking mold off her floorboards then she finally decided to have us clean her house.
Like she cared more about the disaster gibs than the freaking toxic & pathogenic fungi growing in her rooting floorboards.

It was fun knocking out water-damaged drywall with a sledgehammer though.

According to CNN (using that because based on what you posted, I feel like she'd listen to them) there have only been slightly over two million deaths WORLDWIDE due to Covid (not including the bias in the numbers). Of those dead, just under 400k are from the USA. There were slightly more than 400k American soldiers killed during WW2 where getting torn apart by a German MG42 or getting shelled in a foxhole is a little more of a cut and dry reason for a cause of death than being 85 or obese or a cancer patient (or a combination of the three and others) with the flu.

STATE GETTING MORE VACCINE, BUT COUNTY NUMBERS REMAIN UNCHANGED

• 3.144 million doses in California; Monterey County still has just 24,150

AT THURSDAY night’s town hall, Director of Health Elsa Jimenez said the biggest question on everyone’s mind was when the Monterey County would be able to start vaccinating everyone 65 and older.

So far, only health care workers, first responders and residents of “long-term care settings” have been eligible to be vaccinated in Monterey County, even though last week Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that all senior citizens now qualified.

But when health officer Dr. Ed Moreno tried to explain when the 65-plus population would be able to get the long-awaited injections, all he could say was, “as soon as we get more vaccine.” This morning, Monterey County statistics showed that the local allocation stands at 24,150 doses — the same it was on Thursday night, and the same place it’s been for more than a week. Moreno provided no indication of when more vaccine would be arriving, or what he’s doing to make sure the county gets its fair share.

The "fair share" question arises because this morning’s data from the California Department of Public Health show that the state has received 3,144,575 doses of the Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus vaccines. With about 1.15 percent of the state’s population, you might think Monterey County would have received more than 36,000 doses by now. Instead, it has just two-thirds as many.

Also worth noting is that, while about 12 percent of the nation’s 332 million people live in California, only 10 percent of the 31,161,075 doses distributed nationwide have come to this state.

Though they had nothing to announce about future vaccine availability in the county, at Thursday’s town hall officials did unveil a website where people could “indicate their interest in getting a Covid-19 vaccination.” But those same officials were also careful to point out that Monterey County residents who filled out the form would not be registering for a shot.

“It allows you to put your information in and more importantly your contact information we’ll be able to reach out to you with more information about where you can get vaccinated,” county administrator Charles McKee said.

SURGE IN LOCAL CASES HAS SLOWED, BUT HOSPITALIZATIONS STILL UP

This morning the county health department said it had confirmed 459 new cases of coronavirus among county residents yesterday, bringing the total for the last seven days to 3,022 — a significant decline from the 4,043 new cases during the week ending Jan. 9.

Of this week’s 3,024 cases, 2,202 were in Salinas and the Salinas Valley, while 530 were in the Monterey Peninsula: 240 in Seaside, 132 in Marina, 80 in Monterey, 27 in Pacific Grove, 21 in Carmel Valley, nine in Carmel area (93923), five in Big Sur, two in Pebble Beach and one in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Hospitalizations of patients with Covid-19, however, increased to 217 in Monterey County, the CDPH said, which is an all-time high. The number of Covid patients in the county’s four ICUs stands at 27, according to CDPH data — well below the county’s highest total of 38, which was reached on the day after Christmas — but ICU availability continues to be at the critical stage, with just four beds available. This morning CHOMP said it has 47 coronavirus-positive inpatients, including eight in its ICU.
