Eros and Thanatos are just archetypes he used for love (or rather... lust, I think) and death. "Reptilian brain" wasn't used by Freud, that's my insert as a metaphore for something primal.Well, I part ways with Freud in the Eros and Thanatos parts. He tries to animalize humans ie the reptilian brain. Humans do have repetitive survival patterns but we do have agency over those patterns as a higher organic being than dogs.
That agency you're talking about is consciousness, Ego in freudian model.
That's a different school of psychology, behaviorism (most basic way of explaining it: it's only possible to observe and modify behavior, fixing behavior fixes mind). Conditioning does work on people. For example victim of a traumatic event can develop association between the event and object or situation related to the event and develop phobia related to the object or event - just like the dogs associated sound of a bell with food.I never understood why pavlov's dog experiments or any kind of animal behavior could be applied to human behavioral patterns.
Rehab works on conscious level - you are aware of the problem and take action to deal with it. Behavioral conditioning is subconscious and beyond control. Let's say I was hit by a red car. My brain developed a patern between red car and terrible pain and therfore decided that every red car is a source of pain and danger. Or I was assaulted on a specific road and my brain now thinks that this road is the most dangerous place on Earth. I can't do anything about the feeling of dread related to red cars or walking down that road (I can still drive a red car or go down that road but dread remains).Humans can interrupt behaviors. Rehabs prove this everyday.
What you describe is "anticipation" - another defense mechanism like "sublimation" and "distortion". You basically tell ID: "Shut up, if we go with your plan we'll suffer", so you anticipate consequences of your action. It's one of the good \ healthy mechanisms. It's about the personhood. You're walking down the street and you see a person you hate, your Id remembers the personal injury and wants retaliation but the super ego reminds you that the ramifications of retaliation are greater than the momentary satisfaction of punching the shit out the bottomfeeder. It's behavior interruptus. It's determined by the self training the super ego has over the ID to protect the ID. The feelings of injury are just feelings.
Well, Young is an aknowledged psychologist, who am I to dispute his theories?I do believe in subconscious connection. I also believe that is subject to super ego influence.
And this could explain teen boys troubling wet dreams dealing with new subconscious sexual narratives that engage the sexual mind in sleep and the lack of experiential usage and control leads to the expected outcome. The mind/Id/soul is very strong.
Anyways, it was nice discussing but it's late and I need to get some rest. We can continue later if you feel like it but in the meantime, nigty.
