I think "closed system" polyamory has worked in some cultures, and by this I mean polygamy and polyandry. The difference being commitment.
Interesting take. These systems provided the same benefit monogamy did—social stability—as necessary at a time when lineage was socially significant and birth control wasn’t an option. Feudal, etc., societies that has these practices also had some heavy-handed enforcement methods for people were caught screwing around outside of those boundaries. Plus, you were probably being pretty blatant if you were getting caught in flagrante delicto before advanced surveillance.
The solution is simple: modern poly people need to agree that some behaviors warrant throwing people in the stocks in the public square. I humbly suggest it for 50-year-old dudes who are trying to acquire a bunch of live-in teen girlfriends.
