Personally, I prefer penne, or zitti because they're less messy to eat, and the little ridges capture more sauce, but that's just me.

True... but the textures of penne and bolognese sauce tend to clash a bit. They really need something like cheese (preferably in a pasta bake scenario) to mesh nicely IMHO.

I personally don't mind it that much, but I see your point. Penne does really shine best when it's in something baked and cheesy. Truthfully, I just like it because I find it easier to eat than spaghetti, or any other kind of long noodle.
