Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Unironically, I think they realized they screwed up by banning him from everywhere. Sure, you can still find some platforms grifting the "muh Trump!!!" angle, but it's only been a couple of weeks since Trump left office. Since Trump is really off the scene without Twitter or anything, there's this vacuum of new Trump info or news. We saw it with the GME stuff, where they wanted to blame le ebil orange man, but there were no easy Trump tweets to embed in an article or something to shift the narrative. Suddenly, journalists (read: traitors to the country) realize they might have to produce actual news to be taken seriously. And all the while, Trump's star rises among his base since he's only a memory and not actively screwing anything up.
I thought it would take months for trump to be forgotten, but it’s only taken a few weeks.

1. I am under 70 and in good health. I will be fine.

2. Again, I will be fine. By the way, hasn't the asymptomatic spread been debunked?

3. Didn't the Germans and Russians say the exact same thing in the 1930s and 40s?

4. Again, that sounds like what the Germans and Russians said in the 1930s and 40s.

5. Really? Then why must you talk about how comfortable you are with wearing a mask?

6. Okay, take in mind my consideration of wanting to be a free person who accepts whatever risks come in my life.

7. Will you be considerate of people who don't think exactly like you?

Holy fucking virtue signal. I didn't ask you to wear the mask! I couldn't give less of a shit if you cover your face. Don't pretend it's for me, when it's really just because you were told to, and want those sweet, sweet approval points from reddit/twitter/Facebook, and the asspats from Big Daddy Government. Don't talk to me about how "considerate" and "caring" you are. My mental health, and the mental health of thousands, if not millions of others, has been steadily declining the longer we're forced to do this shit. We've crippled the economy, leading, again, thousands, if not millions, to lose their jobs, and are unable to support themselves, or their families. But yeah, no, keep telling me how "considerate" you are for supporting even more government regulations and continued lockdowns. Obey the government, trust science, and question nothing

When my mother worked in a nursing home she had this little old lady that needed a walker to get around and without it she was a fall risk. For the patient's safety the staff put her in a wheelchair and put a lap buddy on her so she couldn't get up and wander around and potentially hurt herself. Well, eventually her family visited and were upset and bent out of shape that the staff in this nursing home were restraining their relative.

The case eventually went to the state and the state declared that the nursing home couldn't protect the patient essentially from herself because she had a right to her freedoms and to get hurt. This led her to eventually falling and breaking her hip and she essentially died from the pain of her injury (60+% of hip replacement surgeries end in death even if the surgeries are a success). Well now the family was mad because "how dare you not protect our [relative] from herself" and tried to sue the home which the case got thrown out of court because of the state's previous assessment of the situation.

I think about this a lot, especially since this bullshit started.

No. But what has been confirmed by the WHO in a quietly published study is that the vast majority (I believe over 95%) of cases are spread by symptomatic people. If I'm doing the math right and being generous with the 5% number, out of "muh 400K dead grandmas" only 20K deaths can be linked to asymptomatic people.

So, like every other coronavirus, cold and flu.

wearing a mask "for me" is inconsiderate because I never asked them to lol. to quote ayn rand:
I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.
In other words mind your own business.

that's a good point, my obvious reply to "what if?" would be "what about the flu mutating or a cold rotting your balls from the inside-out"? either a virus family follows their pathology or it doesn't, if it doesn't how can we be sure about any virus? and if indeed does, corona isn't new so we can be pretty sure what's gonna happen (with higher severity or less). cognitive dissonance only works so far
Don't get me wrong - viruses (and bacteria, and plants & animals) can behave differently than most of their family - but the burden of proof should always go to proving the outlier is different, rather than assuming difference just because "we just don't know".

Now at the start of the pandemic, public health officials made a fair assumption - that SARS-2 would act like SARS-1 or MERS (e.g. slower spread, high lethality). Given that it is closer to SARS-1 than any other human coronavirus, it wasn't necessarily a bad call. However, it soon because apparent that COVID is acting like its sister species OC43 & HKU-1 (e.g. "common cold coronaviruses) and two other species in the sister-genus alphacoronavirus (e.g. quick spread, low lethality).

Now, the issue is that people are trying to assign traits to COVID-19 that are found nowhere in the Coronaviridae family - or even the same order/class/phyla/kingdom. The amount of people acting like COVID is "similar to HIV" despite the two existing in two entirely different kingdoms (like saying a human is "similar to mushrooms") is outrageous. I have seen zero peer-reviewed evidence that COVID-19 has any ability which the rest of its family does not; yet here we are with journalists telling the masses that COVID can "bind to your T-cells" like its fucking measles or some shit.
Is it impossible for COVID-19 to develop a trait which is unheard of for Coronaviridae? No. But fucking prove it first.
So this fuck will wear a mask for the rest of their natural lives as they could pass opportunist pathogens to immunocompromised people?
No, not unless Big Daddy Government and Trusted News Sources tell them too

Saw this piece of click-bait cross my newsfeed:

Doctors just found an even scarier new coronavirus infection

  • Doctors from Brazil found an even more dangerous type of coronavirus infection, a dual infection with two separate strains.
  • The researchers detailed two COVID-19 cases with people in their mid-30s who were infected with both the Brazilian mutation (P.2) and a different strain circulating in Brazil.
  • These co-infections could lead to the creation of additional mutations, the researchers said.
Tens of millions of people worldwide have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose already, with several million having gone through the full two-dose regimen. On top of that, two other vaccine makers just announced positive Phase 3 results for additional vaccine candidates that could soon be authorized for emergency use — the Novavax and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. But COVID-19 has changed as well, just in time for vaccines. The SARS-CoV-2 virus mutates like any other microorganism, after all.
The final weeks of 2020 brought news of two highly infectious mutant coronavirus strains, including the UK (B.1.1.7) and South African (B.1.351) versions. In early January, news dropped of a Brazilian strain (P2 or B.1.1.28), and governments around the world have started taking measures to reduce the spread of these highly infectious variations. This includes additional genetic testing to understand how the new strains were spreading in their countries, which has allowed some researchers to discover an even more dangerous coronavirus infection that can occur.

The coronavirus has been mutating since the beginning. Some studies showed that the version that reached Europe and the US in March 2020 was more infectious than the one from Wuhan. Scientists have tracked mutations throughout the pandemic to understand how the virus evolves and ensure that vaccines would work. The Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna drugs are still effective against the UK strain, while the South African strain might reduce their effectiveness. The Johnson & Johnson drug was tested in trials against the South African mutation, and the company delivered impressive efficacy against that strain.
With more researchers tracking the new mutations, it’s not surprising to hear that doctors in Brazil have identified two people who were infected simultaneously with two different mutated coronavirus strains. This is a worrisome development, indicating that people might pick up more than one strain from their communities, with each one capable of replicating inside the body to such extent that the two distinct versions would show up in genetic testing.
The Brazilian researchers posted their findings in a study that was not peer-reviewed, per Reuters. The two patients in question were both in their 30s and tested positive for the P.2 mutation and a different strain. Their symptoms were mild. One person developed a dry cough while the other experienced coughing, sore throat, and a headache. Neither person required hospitalization.
The research indicates that different variants of the same virus can coexist inside the same host, and this phenomenon might favor further mutations.
“These co-infections can generate combinations and generate new variants even more quickly than has been happening,” study lead researcher Dr. Fernando Spilki told Reuters. “It would be another evolutionary pathway for the virus.”
This might not be the first time several strains of the virus have inhabited the same host. It could be a common occurrence in places where multiple coronavirus versions are spreading inside communities. Researchers are performing more genetic testing now than before as they search for the more worrisome strains. In turn, this would increase the chances of discovering these dual infections.
It’s unclear whether any of the UK, South African, or Brazilian mutations could have developed from dual infections that went undetected. A few weeks ago, researchers in Italy found a local mutation that developed inside an immunocompromised patient who tested positive for COVID-19 for several months. The researchers speculated that this mutation might be the precursor of the UK strain but could not prove it.
News Flash: Viral substrains can exist in the same host at the same time!
IIRC like three or four substrains of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) have been found in the same host, and Rhinoviral infections are so fucking common & mundane that they rarely even bother to ID down to the species/strain/substrain level; so this isn't new information. Of course, they are trying to act like this is some horrifying doom situation and expect illiterate d00mers to think that the two substrains will have like multiplicative effects or something

Long covid is going to be the next big munchie trend, calling it now.
Already is. I heard through the grapevine that an ex-friend who is batshit insane has diagnosed herself with long covid and is posting 24/7 on her 2 twitter accounts, 2 facebook accounts, instagram, and who knows what else, about how she is too exhausted to even type a paragraph without stopping to rest her aching wrists. This person had every psychoceramic exaggerated "disability" already, including having diagnosed herself, her husband, and all half dozen of her kids with the 'tism, ditto gluten intolerance (really, all of them! the whole family!) and put them all on restrictive weird diets, and made a whole cottage industry off of unnecessary "assisted communication" and "sensory toys" based on her kids who are as far as I can tell pretty much normal other than one is slow and the rest have her as a mom. She now posts around the clock about how covidiots are literally murdering her because she is so exhausted she can hardly lift a spoon to tell us how many spoons she has. She is in favor of double masking, of course. She may be on track to becoming a covid-themed lolcow, at this rate.

In other discouraging news, recent trips to the store here have shown that many locals are going all-in on the double mask suggestion. I thought surely that would provoke at least a little skepticism even from the bovine class but I guess not.

I know this sounds horrible but if the South African strain spreads to epidemic levels in the US and the current vaccines do not work, I kindda want to see how Biden will handle it.
Apart from symbolic and feel-good gestures, what has Biden done that has resulted in a meaningful improvement over what Trump had started doing before he left office? Executive Orders requiring masks on Federal property and ordering more vaccines for the summer may be nice things on paper, but they do little to address what's happening with COVID here and now.

Given what I know about nursing homes, this isn't surprising and consistent with state inspections making resident rights and dignity a huge point of emphasis. Adding to that is the fact that restraints were abused and misused so much in the past that they're practically forbidden now.

Perhaps your thinking about how resident rights would come in to play in those homes where COVID patients were brought in and not kept away from the healthy residents thus causing more people to become infected and/or dead? Those officials that ordered and allowed it certainly didn't appear to have residents' dignity and best interests in mind when and where that happened.

How the fuck do you breathe comfortably through this? Do these people not ever drink water, blow their nose, etc.? Doesn't this get nasty and moist and full of spittle and bacteria that you keep on re-inhaling all day?

Here's some more brainwashed nonsense from Twitter:

These idiots really think some gov bux is going to convince healthy adults to stay home in their pods for 2 fucking years. Face it: even with stimulus paychecks, people are STILL going to do what they want.

They want the government to slap them around so bad it's downright masochistic.

Meanwhile, two of my co-workers told me today they firmly believe even if EVERYONE is tested and shows no symptoms, it's still selfish and evil and dangerous to meet in small gatherings because there is a CHANCE you could spread COVID.

When I had post viral syndrome from a bad dose of flu in 2016, I got so constipated as I wasn't awake enough to shit properly, I thought I had appendicitis.

If your retard ex friend has time to tappy tappy on the internet, shes not sick.

You know, I can understand wearing a mask, and I wore two of the same mask for a short few days the previous year. It wasn’t all that comfortable and I wouldn’t do it again, but I certainly looked less stupid than he is in that picture.

Anyway, mutation aside, how are there still people going on about not killing grandma? Do these people think humans will tolerate a century more of these “””precautions”””? Are they even human beings? Or are they like those aliens from They Live?

Deaths caused by alcohol hit a new high during the first nine months of 2020, provisional figures for England and Wales show.
Between January and September, 5,460 of these deaths causes were registered - up 16% on the same months in 2019.

Stories like this will start trickling out over the next year. Pretty soon I bet we'll find that the excess mortality from covid is mostly the result of other things.

Hearing about double masks and the escalation of all this covid shit makes me really appreciate moving to a city in a state with no mask mandate or covid shutdowns. I see people's friendly faces when I go out, and life is pretty much back to normal.

How are the pro mask states keeping the lie going when you can hop a border and witness sanity with zero evidence of consequences for their brazen freedom?

Seriously curious. Are social media posts from grandma killing states banned or something in your pro mask area?

Americans are really fucking stupid, that's all there is to it. A lot of people seriously believe everything the TV man says instantly without so much as a second thought.
