Europe is looking for new astronauts: 'Disabled people are also welcome'

For the first time in eleven years, Europe is looking for new astronauts. Space agency ESA will launch a campaign for the new vacancies at the end of March.

Every European can apply from March 31 to May 28 for the new vacancies for astronauts. ESA is hoping for many applications from women to increase diversity.

The new astronauts must be shown to the world in October 2022.

Parastronauts
The ESA also wants to give people with disabilities the opportunity to go to space. The organization calls them parastronauts: "Diversity at ESA should not only be about origins, age, background or gender of our astronauts, but perhaps also about physical limitations."

In 2010 the previous group of astronauts was hired. It consisted of two Italians, a German, a Briton, a French and a Dane. They have all gone to the International Space Station in recent years. More than 8000 Europeans had then registered for the selection rounds, including more than two hundred Dutch people. In the round before that, in 1998, the Dutchman André Kuipers was hired.

To the moon
With the next crew of astronauts, Europe is entering "a new era of space exploration," said ESA. The organization works with the United States, Canada and Japan on manned journeys to the moon. In 2024, two Americans must set foot on the moon, for the first time since 1972.

A space station must also be built in orbit around the moon. Europe can provide at least three astronauts who will live in that space station near the moon.

Why we are going back to the moon
So far three Dutch people
So far, three native Dutch have been in space. Lodewijk van den Berg from the Zeeuws-Flemish Sluiskil was the first. He flew the space shuttle Challenger in early 1985. Van den Berg did so after he was naturalized as an American.

Wubbo Ockels was the first Dutch citizen to orbit the Earth. He went to space in late 1985, also in the Challenger. It was the last successful mission of the space shuttle, which exploded on its next launch in January 1986. All seven crew members were killed.

André Kuipers is the most experienced Dutch astronaut. He went to the space station ISS for a week and a half in April 2004. He also stayed there from December 2011 to July 2012.

Um...isn't any activity involving such high G-forces, and especially in this case where extended abnormal gravity is involved, all about the physical limitations of the people participating?

I was under the impression that astronauts trained extensively to be in tip top physical shape so they can handle the controlled explosion to get them to space, deal with being in space, and then the semi-controlled fall from orbit we call re-entry...

they do.

this move is retarded.

Personally I don't think the technology is all there yet for physically disabled, but if people want to volunteer then go ahead.
Isn't it an interesting thought? The effects of zero g on a paralyzed body? Or how it would effect an obese person?
Probably nothing good, but a few eggs need to get broken. Sure, we could figure that out on the ground, but why not do it in space?

Pilots train to resist positive Gs by tightening their leg muscles, thus maintaining blood pressure in their body and head.

There were actually several fighter pilots in WWII who were missing legs, or parts of them and could pull higher Gs because they didn’t have to worry about their blood pooling in them.
They're not talking about competent pilots. They want people with tumblr-style mental disorders-- people who have mild disabilities on the surface or imagined disabilities that wouldn't impair their ability to flip a switch if they had to, but not real scientists. Someone they can send on a test flight of whatever new vehicle is taking the place of the space shuttle. Someone no one will care about when the prototype Grrl Power Super Rocket explodes on its first test flight. Someone to blame when everything goes wrong and a reason to never send a Differently Abled™ Paranaut on a mission ever again.

EDIT:

I believe the China and the Asian countries will take the lead eventually. We focus so much on the faults of our culture, worshipping at the alter of diversity, and seeking forgiveness for past sins that we don't have time to focus on actual goals. We see this in colleges already with this obsession to admit more Black students by dropping standardized testing and other requirements so now its just the GPA and recommendations. But the truth is that not all schools are the same and a high GPA from a school in the ghetto does not mean as much as high GPA from a school in a wealthier area. I keep hearing from progressives that skilled teachers who might start out in lower income schools later transfer to wealthier schools. Such, I am left to conclude that the schools in the ghetto have teachers that do not give a shit about student achievement. Such when even a student with mediocre skills takes classes at the ghetto school, they seem like a genius. The teachers that has atrophied intellectually is suddenly amazed at this moderate stimulus.

Then the colleges look at the GPA and recommendations, which in part is motivated by the school being able to proclaim we sent X here, for admissions. Such, a student that has not really been challenged meets kids that have tutors and we see the results in the classroom. Many of these students then are faced with a real skilled and driven classmates where the result is that they do poorly in the course or fail. This not only is bad for the diversity student but takes a spot away from someone that could have succeeded. Such in the end we are like a circle of retards giving ourselves asspats for muh diversity while Asia just laughs at the fuckery.

P.S. I live in Burgerland so I only have a passing knowledge of Germany and Scandinavian education systems but as far as I understand post secondary education comes at a dramatically lower cost but has a ton more gatekeeping for actual universities. Unless you are reasonably academically talented you will be given the choice of a trade school or something along those lines.
So, I guess all the authentic African countries didn't place.

I shared this story with a guy who is nuts about engineering and space and he gave a goddamn legit reason for wanting disabled people:

There are advantages to being legless in zero gravity. Mostly legs just hang around and get in the way. It also means you need less calories and less oxygen.

...or do they also mean people with mental disabilities? Is there still hope for me to become an astronaut?

Okay, I don't know why you guys all went with mentally disabled...
Being able to have space travel be accessible to disabled people is in our best interest if we're going to take it seriously.

Astronauts are huge investments, what happens when our brave pioneers get hurt on the job once we're actually doing work up there?

Take em behind the fucking lunar rover and shoot them? No. That's bad for moral, and having someone who can still operate the equipment in a wheelchair is still way cheaper then bringing them back to earth for triage and replacing them.

...but for right now, think of it as kind of a science experiment, so we have answers to these question when we're designing space infra.

Countries by fewest to most blacks / south Asians / Slavs

Also, Cypress is a city near Houston. Cyprus is a Greek island nation.

This would have made a good Red Dwarf episode. Dave and rimmer pick up a stasis pod that’s been drifting in space for years amd is labelled as female crew. Dave is delighted only to find it has the first trans disabled poly astronaut in it, a six foot ogre, who was jettisoned out the airlock by his peers a month into the original mission. Parallel stories unfold in original and current times where we see the troonstronaut annoying his crew mates by dilating in zero G, doing the pronoun thing, cancelling the entire crew, being needy and predatory and generally pissing everyone off. Eventually he’s lured back into the stasis pod by Kryten and blasted back into space. End credit scene: 300 years later, he is picked up by another ship: ominous music.

So instead of Houston we have a problem, it will be Houston i am triggered. This will also give a new definition to "safe space".....and maybe just maybe, we were doing the anal probing all along.

before they start sending the diversity brigade to space, can we get the fully operational Galileo GPS first? it is embarrasing that Russia and China have managed to finish their systems years before Europe
I think that having own GPS independent of USA or Russia would be higher priority than getting to have the first black tranny cripple muslim astronaut in history

He'd do it for fruit. He's also less likely to fuck up than a diversity hire.

China cheats these tests. Only their best schools in the big cities take the tests and thus they score high. The West would score high too if it did the same.

Here's the source of the numbers direct from the OECD: https://www.oecd.org/pisa/pisa-2015-results-in-focus.pdf Notice how it's not "China" but "B-S-J-G (China)", i.e. Beijing-Shanghai-Jiangsu-Guangdong.

Singapore's exams for 15-16 year olds (which is the age PISA measures) use a variant of the pre-2006 UK system and is still run jointly with Cambridge University: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore-Cambridge_GCE_Ordinary_Level So in theory, anyone in the UK who got an A or A* in GCSE maths pre-2006 would top these PISA charts and it wasn't uncommon for half the class in non-urban schools to achieve that. GCSE maths doesn't even cover calculus.

And its because of reasons like that we will never truly become a space travelling species
We were never going back to the moon as a civilization, and its practically Qtard to even hope that Musk and the billionaires will try to escape what our decline will eventually bring socially.

Physical disabilities? I think they are discriminating against people like me with mental disabilities. Let's pack a rocket with schizophrenic, autistic, bibolar, anxious people and I dunno.. furries? Send all us sick fucks to the moon. Inclusive! No trannies though, only cute traps.

I was going to say... Sure US schools may be shit but to take China at its word that its schools are great is lunacy. One only has to look at the original design and development its workforce is 'capable' of to see the disconnect.

Have a student body that trounces us across the board but that can't engineer their way out of a wet paper bag? Something definitely as off as claiming to have COVID under control 10 months ago...

So instead of Houston we have a problem, it will be Houston i am triggered
Houston.... we're problematic
Houston.... we've got a .... wait what were your pronouns again?
Houston.... where is my comfort animal?
Houston.... one small step for latinx, one big rolldown for the disabled
Houston.... I acknowledge my privilege and I'll let you speak first...but please hurry
Houston.... why is there only 1 bathroom?
Houston.... guess my gender today
