What we're seeing currently is a gap forming between assent (going along because you don't want to rock the boat) versus consent (an unambiguous yes given from a position of agency). This is a good thing. It will help people to form more meaningful relationships and prevent regretful sex.

What needs to happen is that everyone needs to willing to talk about consent. Not a lecture loaded with condescending snark, but having a dialogue between equals. Both parties need to recognize that peer pressure and coercion do not equal consent, and to be strengthened to resist these pressures. This is one of the key duties of feminism. Unfortunately, the current state of tumblr/twitter social justice has completely dropped the ball in that regard. But we can't say anything about it, lest we be accused of being insufficiently opposed to rape.

This, so hard. It's a more genteel form of sexism/racism that appeals to the delicate sensibilities of middle-class liberals. It's not about the equality, it never was. It's about the cult of personality for the online demagogues.

If I weren't on vacation right now I'd show this story to my embryology and genetics professors. The embryologist had family that was stationed over there and has really off colour stories about Japanese steriotypes about Americans. The geneticist taught there for decades.

That "contract" business ticks me off so much. I get that it's a thing in BDSM, but that's different; the element of submission and the potentially dangerous nature of the activities make serious, informed consent an important element. (One 50 Shades got horribly wrong, as many, many people in the romance novel community can tell you.) Asking someone to sign a contract to prove consent to ordinary sex, presumably after you've already considered getting it on anyway, screams "I expect this to go horribly wrong."
