sometimes i think about making a bingo card with Mauler’s most common movie references, because it often seems that he’s truly only seen a small handful of films. i think my list would be Alien, Terminator, Civil War, TLJ, LOTR... help me out y’all! The problem is that a lot of films in that genre, not just the MCU but a lot of summer action blockbusters in general, are very similar tonally and follow almost the same exact story beats. Just swap out characters and setting and you're good to go. It something where when you've seen enough they start to bleed together, but you also appreciate and recognize when something purposefully deviates and breaks away from the conventional mold.
This is where Mauler and co really laughably fail as critics to me and I'll echo @Idiotron's sentiments. Mauler has built himself up as a highbrow critic. He mainly enjoys "objectively good" movies and because of this, he needs to justify every single thing he likes and showcase how amazing it is. Without a healthy pool of movies to reference though he ends up praising things for being innovative and unique, not recognizing them as being entirely derivative. He can't identify when something is a retread, or even intentionally invoking an older trope in some cases.
It's absolutely pathetic to watch, and it really wouldn't even matter if he wasn't all about keeping up his smug, holier than thou, objective facade.
