It seems you can't just have a games console any more that isn't forcing a bunch of pointless shit no one likes. While you could argue things like the analogue stick and rumble pack were gimmicks, or even say motion controls were a well intentioned misstep, things like the Switch joycons that are frequently breaking, the WiiU's tablet controller, Xbone's Kinect features. No one likes any of it.

Convenience.
Consoles had one advantage over PC. Plug and play convenience. An advantage they pissed away in favour of mandatory patches, installs, and other stupid bullshit.

Just played Psychonauts for the very first time, and man, that game couldn't be made today without a lot of backslash. You see Psychonauts is a very standard 3d platformer, what sets it apart from your typical "bang bang wahoo" platformer is the writhing and overall tone of the game, and that's the thing, there is a lot of dark humor in the game, involving jokes about suicide, mental illness, racial stereotypes, parental neglect, hell the last stage sure as hell would trigger a lot of vegans.

Let's see how the sequel turns out, but i'm not holding my hopes up...

The first Drakengard had a mission where you killed children. It also had a pedophile you could play as. The English version attempts to scrub any mention of Leonard's pedophilia with little success. Yes, you can choose him when replaying that mission.

Even for the time, something like this was odd for a console game. Fallout 1 and 2 and the first Deus Ex let you harm child NPCs, but those were also on PC and completely optional. They didn't have entire missions focused on it, either.

Come to think of it, I don't think any of the Build Engine shooters can be made in today's cultural climate.

VR has its place for people like me. I'm a flight and racing sim enthusiast and VR adds a terrific amount to those genres. As for mainstream uses, I think it'll fizzle. It'll always be an expensive toy for people like me who can't afford a real 747.

Sony do at least make 100% offline useable machines and will generally release GOTY editions of really popular games that have all the patches and DLC included on disc. Nintendo try, but they can't always get the whole game on a card and rarely ever re-release GOTY editions. Microsoft would like you to bend the fuck over and shove that Ethernet cord up your own arse like the little bitch you are. Future proofing is always my biggest concern which is why I use GoG (and you can bet those installers are backed the fuck up on physical media) and prefer Sony, nobody can take those games from me and if they're looked after Sony consoles are actually pretty reliable. I have every generation of Playstation. My PS2 has had a minor tray repair and my PS3 needed a new laser. Considering the amount of use they get even now, that's not bad going.
