I agree with the part about the lottery (assuming he doesn't blow it all immediately). If DSP ever truly found real financial success he would probably stop streaming (although I don't think he would disappear from the internet). However if he was dead broke and had to get a job I still think he would stream because he's still chasing the dragon of when he was 'white hot popular' on youtube. No job that DSP can actually get would satisfy him money-wise. Despite his delusions, Boeing is not going to pay him $150k/yr because of his decade old ACE certification.

You know, I was doing some Spring cleaning today and upon realizing that the money I had spent on my hobby could rather have been invested into Phil's gacha addiction, felt so unbelievably owned. Qualified disagree. Phil would stop streaming tomorrow if he won the lottery or found some other, easier way of making the same amount of money. He hates his audience and a part of that hate I believe comes from the fact that he knows fundamentally that he is beholden to them, cf. him dancing like a monkey for Tut or whoever that whale was dropping stacks to give him like 700 tier 3 subs a few years ago. I do agree that Phil is a narcissist but I think he gets his fix the most by being able to keep anything and anyone he doesn't like at arm's length until he doesn't need them anymore.

Also Phil getting money specifically during games which make him miserable and/or look stupid is great because it means he'll keep playing them and debasing himself like the ten cent whore he is.

Just finished watching a playthrough of Little Nightmares II with Kat. Although I enjoyed it artistically, I'm glad I didn't buy or play it. Much like the first game, nothing is actually explained and it's incredibly disappointing once it's over. I Hate that kind of writing.

It's basic indie game writing to be quite honest. It's not mind blowing and it's chewed down enough to be understandable. It's not AAA messy because there was a hired team of writers and they had two guys different guys writing each scene. The ending is crystal clear and not open to interpretation at all. Phil says that he's happy he didn't play it and I agree. Mostly because his wheelchairs would have just told him the solution to every puzzle. Ghosts N' Ghablins and DOS 2 were sorely needed adrenaline injections to the Pig's snore-inducing streams. Another easy thing would just be dull.

I am now going to spoil the shit out of Little Nightmares 2, so if you intend to play it, give this post a wide berth. In short, apparently unless you announce your big dark twist with a fucking marching band, like Bugsnax, it's much too subtle for Phil to grasp. Little Nightmares 2 is the type of subtle than ten year olds understand without missing a beat. It straight up shows you what happens in case you had any doubts by the end.

Spoiler: Little Nightmares 2 Ending, LISA, Bugsnax, Disco Elysium and other "Hard hitting" stories. Long.

Little Nightmares 2 is basically another in a long line of Small Child, Grimdark Scary World, Violent Death puzzle platformers. I've beaten a couple of them and was unimpressed. I have seen Little Nightmares 2 played, as well as the first part. The writing isn't mindblowing, it doesn't make you feel for the characters or anything like that. They're not complicated people, either. It's the opposing school of writing, basically. It's simple and to the point enough to be memorable. You are heroic child Mono trying to escape scary place The Pale City and you join forces with already established to be kind of a bitch previous protagonist Six. She is for the most part a useful ally. In escaping the city, Six and Mono do pretty fucked up stuff to the monsters. At one point they burn one alive and Six warms her hands near the oven he's currently cooking alive in. There's an achievement for beating the corpse of an enemy when you've already confirmed the kill. Dark world, he who fights monsters, etcetera.

So obviously you feel justified in your pragmatic and vengeful actions. Six and Mono are well characterized through the whole thing. If Mono dies, Six will generally not even stop running to check if he's okay until they've spent some time together. Mono is always trying really hard to save her, even when it's clear that Six doesn't care about him nearly as much, because that's the type of person he is. By the end, oh what a twist, Six is doing a cliff catch and pull thing, but hesitates, and decides to drop Mono to his death. The game has even made a point of showing before that Six is strong enough to pull Mono up no problem. So it's deliberate. Mono then gets trapped with a flesh blob monstrosity who shows him to a chair and over time turns him into the Thin Man, one of the main monsters who has been chasing them all game long. So there you go, stable time loop, Mono becomes the villain, going nicely with the theme of he who fights monsters and suffers betrayals. There's almost no loose ends to tie, just whether Thin Mono was controlling the tower or the tower was controlling him.

This is very much about the level of Bugsnax. Simple story, to the point, obvious twist clearly shown, call it a day. Compared to other Indies that have made a wave in recent years, I wouldn't say it's on the level of world building and relatability LISA or Undertale had. You know, games that made you feel a thing or two. It is easy to feel bad for Mono and confirm your suspicions that Six is a total bitch, and probably how real people would act if thrown in the situation she's in. But that's about it. They're not flat, but there's not a lot of complexity to them, nor does the desperate fight for survival situation allow for deeper characterization. That and the purely visual storytelling, of course. Sorry, Six, no tokin' and muff eatin' for you. That's Ellie's privilege!

By the end of LISA you're probably sympathizing with a guy who wants to keep the last woman alive safe at all costs... Meaning humanity will eventually die out. And she's okay with reproducing to save the world to begin with. In his last moments, Brad, dying from a forced drug overdose, goes solo against his closest allies and an entire army. He gets stabbed, shot with arrows, beaten half to death, and he still survives long enough to kill most of the army. Only their leader, his adoptive son, a very good man, stands between him and his adoptive daughter Buddy, and Brad, possibly missing both his arms at this point, gives him a beating so vicious that his stats get crippled when he's playable in the DLC. Rando sure as shit deserved better from Brad, and he's not even mad at him when he gets dropped. Brad then frees his daughter, and asks her if he did the right thing before finally collapsing. He also asks for a hug. And you can have Buddy deny it. I don't know a single person who played this and let Brad die without getting his hug.

That's a plot that you can talk about at length. Have discussions. Analyze the implications of things, wonder whether Brad was truly a good person under all the abuse he's both suffered and put others through. Wonder if Brad was always set on his path to failure, being raised by a horribly abusive father himself. Or if being too weak to truly kick his addictions and better himself warrants some slack for trying. Feel irrationally mad at his father bettering himself and being a good father to Buddy of all people, and feel oddly warm inside when Brad finds him and finally smashes his face in, in spite of his dad having actually changed for the better, which Brad never manages to do.

The more recent Disco Elysium has you take control of detective Harry DuBois, who is going through a pretty legendary rough patch in his life, has just tried to commit honorable sudoku, and is now responsible for solving a murder mystery. The murder mystery isn't even remotely fair and you may actually get stumped at some points. The RPG elements are so hardcore it could literally punish you with death in the first room for building a physically weak character and trying to reach for a tie stuck on a ceiling fan. The writing is so good it manages to have an apocalypse plot, a murderous chair, funny political commentary, a curse, a buddy cop show, broken people trying to make something of their lives, and dancing at a rave with teenagers in the same place and none of it feels like it doesn't belong. The soundtrack is absolutely top notch, and The Mercenary Tribunal is possibly the best scene written in a videogame in the last decade. If you don't look into Harry's past, you won't even find what made him this way, or why he can't get over it. The game doesn't even show you everything in one go, it's pretty much impossible to build a character who can do everything. Hell, I min-maxed with logic as a dump stat and went the whole game calling a poor cook "Hot Cup" because I wasn't smart enough to not do that. The plot is pretty much impossible to follow. Nobody gives you a summary, and it's a mystery to begin with. Harry and his partner Kim hypothesize and you, of course, are free to do so as well. You lead Harry to investigate, he finds some clues that put him on a path, and it all works together very well in the sense that you really are investigating as well, and being smart and exploring related clues rewards you with extra knowledge for the case. But on top of that, everyone involved is so layered and complex it's almost impossible to tell what's REALLY going on. And what really is going on in the end is a double whammy of surprising, to boot. Well, if you get the golden ending.

Hell, Doki Doki Literature Club has a bigger, more impactful twist than this. Mono becoming Thin Man is literally "And then John was a zombie". Not ragging on the writing, I feel like using these well trodden tropes worked alright and definitely made it memorable, but it's hardly difficult to understand. And it's certainly simple, but it's also strong enough to work with no voice acting, audio logs, or flavour text. Almost all of these Limbo succesors try to do the same purely visual storytelling thing and I think Little Nightmares 2 is one of the most succesful ones in that department. I just don't really see people holding roundtable discussions on the plot. I also feel like if they actually had the funding to produce a full story with dialogue, it'd be at the very least a competent one. Even a text-only story tends to be a little stronger by default. Visual storytelling necessarily produces minimalistic tales.

TL;DR: Of course peak consoomer Phil needs a running summary of the plot. And of course peak dumbass Phil would consider the plot of Little Nightmares 2 complex enough to not grasp it by watching a whole playthrough. You can piece together what happened from literally just the ending! God damn, it really puts his Yackooza streams in perspective where he pauses and pigsplains the plot. It really is the sort of shit he'd like to watch. It's always eye-opening to remind myself that he really considers his stall-ridden, two hour prestreamed, begging-filled streams an actual service to the industry because of what he does in them.

It's not even a hard to grasp, lore overloaded plot like Silent Hill's, it's a basic-ass, cliché filled, fairly effective Indie puzzle platformer. Mono really is just a heroic guy, Six really is just a me-first survivalist, and everything in between is white noise and spooky spooky long neck teacher.

Phil, my guy. The only plot you've praised lately is that of thrice cursed Bugsnax. Your opinions on writing are equal to those of an overgrown toddler. You joked about not wanting to play Barbie Horse Adventure, but maybe you SHOULD, since that's the type of writing that makes you feel like a 40 year old big, smart boy. Get Khet to bring you a custom homemade cake, your comfort blanket and some Spongebob games, man. With a side order of Tanqueray in a baby bottle.

This new "Mature Adult unironically loves children's entertainment and thinks pixel girls have cooties" arc is pretty embarassing. I wish the writers would shake it up a little.
