Except you're not left with Torba as your only option. He never was, nor will he ever be your only option. Half of the most recent posts on this thread have literally been talking about the superiority of the Fediverse as compared to "alt tech" platforms like Gab and Parler. Gab is built off of Mastodon right now, for fuck's sake!

The Fediverse, as a whole, is fucking massive with thousands of nodes for you to choose from (some of which have been curated for people new to the idea of federated social networking) and it has so much content that's generated by users throughout the fucking world. Because of the federated model, you're basically 100% immune to deplatforming of any kind since there's hundreds upon thousands of instances to choose from, all of which are able to communicate with one another (on paper). If you're so technically inclined, you can easily set up a Pleroma instance on a Raspberry Pi and federate with literally any instance you wish. Why then, would you want to herald a literal manchild and his incompetent InfoSec team as your only option when superior alternatives, backed by literal standards boards exist?

Yeah that’s fair, I appreciate the insight. To be honest I wasn’t aware of fediverse in particular, but the federated model is a definitely good strat. Ive been deliberately paying less attention to this kind of thing so I spoke too soon saying that we only have guys like Torba. If I could rephrase my post, I’d say that we are (for now) left with guys like that at the forefront of common awareness. So the problem is less that alternative services don’t exist and more that people aren’t aware of them yet. Eventual widespread adoption is required to truly challenge companies like Twitter, FB, and the like. Widespread adoption requires a baseline level of usability + potential for broad appeal + a means of generating awareness.

Then again, plenty of people know about Gab and Parler but they still have a mostly niche userbase. If they can’t draw in normie users (for lack of a better term), the extent of their cultural influence will always be pathetic by comparison. Imo there has to be a reason for someone who doesn’t give a shit about restrictive content policies or free speech to use an alt service over the existing platforms. that’s the biggest challenge. I don’t know. It’s just a shame that Parler and Gab are publicized so much. Maybe they do it on purpose knowing Parler sucks and Gab is run by a sperg lul

I do think, in all fairness, that uploading content should be reserved to people who owns their content.
I always hated that fat megaupload guy because he incited people to steal things and then put it on his platform.
He is/was as scummy as you can get.
But with that rule in place you prevent a lot of things.

This is why I believe all alt-tech platforms will eventually fail. Not because of the "NEO-LIBERAL FAR LEFT PROGRESSIVES TAKING DOWN PLATFORMS THEY DISAGREE WITH" (which they do in all honesty) but because they only serve a niche crowed of people who only in the moment want to feel like they are sticking it to the big bullies. This niche is incapable of generating non-repetitive content that people would find enjoyable enough to spend more than five minutes in a place that was purely made to spite its big tech counter part. My favorite example of this is Bitchute, an alt-tech site that I do actually like. The kind of repetitive content you will find on Bitchute when first coming on to it is going to be one of many things.

1) 9001 videos with the same talking points about politics and current day events
2) Spergs spouting nonsense into the mic about how Hitler was actually a dindu nuffin muffin/ Qanon/ flat earth conspiracies/ Jews/ taking conspiracies too seriously in general/ and the list goes on.
3) Back up of videos that are already on YouTube where they can be viewed in a much better quality and have a more user friendly experience then its alt-tech counterpart. So, why would you ever bother watching it on BitChute anyways? This is usually done by people who bitch about how YouTube is censoring everything but won't make a stance by committing to using another platform because they risk losing a large portion of their audience and thus can't shill for more Patreon money. Either nut the fuck up or shut the fuck up. You can't claim you're fighting the system if you're using the fucking system.
4) Back up of videos that are already on YouTube but are uncensored. (An acceptable use of bitchute)
5) Back up of videos that were on Youtube but was deleted for being to spicy. (Also acceptable)
6) And the rarest of all, actually unique content that is exclusive to Bitchute but you have to spend hours sifting through the repetitive nonsense before you find something or, be already privy to its existence from an external source. (Usually being YouTube ironically)

What this niche crowd doesn't get is that they have to be more then just about crack pot conspiracies and how mainstream website treats them unfairly. This may be a surprise to some but Twitter isn't just about retarded politics. People go to Twitter because they can interact with their favorite content creators or e-celebrities and have fun with like minded people. No one wants to go to Gab or BitChute to get ass blasted with a bunch of whiners and repetitive nonsense.
