The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

New trailer for Godzilla: Singular Point has dropped:

The visual style on display here is way more appealing than the 3D style Polygon employed for the anime trilogy. The monsters look amazing to me and this looks like a Godzilla animation project that will fully take advantage of the animation medium to present the monsters.

So, fingers crossed! It continues to look promising.

Not really a fan of crocodile face Godzilla but Jet Jaguar looks cool and Anguirus looks awesome

Building off of that, SP gets major points from me for using monsters that I never dreamed would ever come back.

Jet Jaguar, Titannosaurus, Gabara? No way I'd have ever expected them to come back.

We've been conditioned to think "OK OK, Mothra, Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla will be the ones to come back" and if we're lucky, we'll get a Rodan or Baragon thrown out there for kicks.

But to really dig this deep into the past and pull rarities like Gabara out of the closet is pretty cool and shows a level of dedication I'd have never expected.

And hey, we get Anguirus back, which is always welcomed. I always mark for Rodan too, though I have to ask, why does he have a goose bill?

This is the kind of CGI that works in anime. I think it's because they got the budget to do so since it'll be released all at once and had some good talent involved so it was just luck, but many studios that implement this style are bum-rushed and they slap on weird toon-cel textures that throw off the lighting, and it makes them stick out like a sore thumb. The kaiju appear to be more alien than expected, but the amount of detail presented to them in terms of realism is super impressive and complements the rest of the composition. What snippets we're seeing of them shows their movements are to be expected from hulking monsters (and machinery), but they still are on the same plane of existence as the animated human characters and backgrounds.

If our fucking Internet will just start cooperating by April, that first weekend I'm getting up with Dad and my little bro to start watching it. I didn't do that for the Ultraman series like I wanted (but Dad seemed ho-hum about it anyway), but admittedly, the CGI used for that show makes people hesitant to watch. Singular Point effortlessly blending in two different styles is impressive enough that I want to see how it works on an episode-by-episode basis.

Jet Jaguar being the mecha protagonist of the series wasn't something I would've expected. I wonder if he'll gain sentience or actually have a bond with his creator/pilot. Oooooh.

I didn't realize Singular Point was coming out in Japan on the 25th! Its like...right around the corner and shit!

Do we have an official date on when it will hit Netflix in the US?

It's gonna get a TV broadcast on April 1st, so hard to say what the plan is.

But it's gonna be 13 episodes, about three hours. Hopefully it doesn't have pacing issues.

I can't put my finger on it, but the design isn't doing it for me.
My gut says not to like it, but my brain can't figure out why.
So frustrating.
Honestly, MechaGodzilla always looks derpy as a toy. When you see it in action is when it's awesome, so I'm assuming the same can be said about Legendary's MechaGodzilla.

Fair point.
I think my apprehension is that I'm getting a Bayformers vibe from it.

I get the concern, was wondering about that, too. But I definitely do believe this is meant to be a prototype most likely funded by Jonah and his eco-terrorist group to be used as some kind of weapon, so its design is going to be rough. It's been, what, the first time since the Showa era that MechaGodzilla is being used for villainous purposes?

Also logical tech power creep from KOTM super plane thingy and whatever super carrier Godzilla and Kong fight on in the trailer.
They never did fire the guns from the underwater base in KOTM, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they were laser cannons.
